Chapter 8: The Witness Who Vanished

The search for Daniel Hayes became the most dangerous investigation I had ever touched.

Not because I didn’t know where the truth was.

Because every person who got close to it disappeared.

The next morning, Caleb called me before sunrise.

“Judge.””

His voice was urgent.

“What happened?””

“Lena Parker is gone.””

I sat up.

“What?””

“I went to check on her.””

“And?””

“The apartment was empty.””

“Signs of a struggle?””

“Yes.””

My heart sank.

“Call the agents.””

“I already did.””

“Then why are you calling me?””

A pause.

“Because you need to see what she left behind.””

Twenty minutes later, I stood inside Lena Parker’s apartment.

The place looked like someone had searched it.

Drawers pulled open.

Cabinets emptied.

Papers scattered.

But one thing remained perfectly untouched.

A small envelope sitting on the kitchen table.

My name was written across it.

*Judge Amara Whitlock.*

I opened it carefully.

Inside was a handwritten letter.

Judge Whitlock,

If you’re reading this, they found me.

My brother Marcus wasn’t killed because of drugs.

He was killed because he found something.

Something connected to Sheriff Voss.

Something connected to the court.

I stopped reading.

The court.

Again.

The same thread.

The same hidden connection.

At the bottom of the letter was a message.

*Ask why your first federal case disappeared.*

My hands froze.

My first federal case.

Six years earlier.

The case that made my career.

A massive corruption investigation involving a private security company.

A case I thought ended successfully.

But now…

I wasn’t sure.

“Caleb,” I said.

He looked at me.

“Find everything about my first federal case.””

His face changed.

“Your own case?””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

“Because someone wants me to remember something.””

Hours later, we uncovered the file.

And something was wrong.

A page was missing.

The exact page containing the original witness list.

The same type of missing evidence.

The same pattern.

Caleb looked sick.

“Someone has been doing this for years.””

“Yes.””

“And they were close to you.””

I stared at my own signature on the documents.

“Yes.””

That night, I returned home.

For the first time in years, I checked my security system twice.

Then three times.

Because I finally understood something.

The enemy wasn’t outside.

They had been inside my world the entire time.

At 2:13 a.m., my phone rang.

Unknown number.

I answered.

“Hello?””

A voice whispered:

“Judge Whitlock.””

I stood immediately.

“Who is this?””

“You don’t have much time.””

“Where is Lena?””

“She’s alive.””

“Who are you?””

Silence.

Then:

“The person who tried to warn you.””

My grip tightened.

“Daniel Hayes?””

The caller stopped breathing.

That was enough.

“Where is he?””

“You’re asking the wrong question.””

“What question should I ask?””

The voice became softer.

“Ask why Daniel trusted you more than he trusted his own wife.””

My heart raced.

“What does that mean?””

The line crackled.

Then the voice said:

“Because he discovered the truth about the judge who came before you.””

The call ended.

I stared at the phone.

The judge who came before me.

My predecessor.

A woman who died suddenly after retirement.

A woman whose files had been sealed.

A woman everyone told me never to investigate.

Then my computer turned on by itself.

One document appeared on the screen.

A sealed court record.

The title made my blood run cold.

*THE WHITLOCK PREDECESSOR INVESTIGATION*

And below it was one sentence.

*Authorized by Judge Amara Whitlock.*

May you like

Except I had never seen it before.

And I had never authorized anything.
