Chapter 5: The Truth Behind the Badge
Sheriff Voss stood in the doorway.
No uniform jacket.
No smile.
No performance.
For the first time, he looked like what he truly was.
A man who knew the walls around him were collapsing.
“You broke into my records room.””
I stared at him.
“No. I entered a government office with legal authority.””
His jaw tightened.
“You always talk like that?””
“When the law matters? Yes.””
He stepped inside.
Caleb moved slightly in front of me.
Voss noticed.
“You’re choosing her?””
Caleb didn’t answer.
“That’s disappointing.””
“No,” Caleb said quietly.
His voice surprised both of us.
“What’s disappointing is realizing how many people you hurt.””
Voss stared at him.
“You think you know what’s happening?””
“I know enough.””
The sheriff laughed.
“You know nothing.””
He looked at me.
“That’s your problem, Judge. You think finding documents means finding the truth.””
“Then tell me the truth.””
For a moment, he was silent.
Then he sat down.
Strangely calm.
“Ten years ago, this county was falling apart.””
I listened.
“Crime everywhere. Drugs everywhere. Nobody respected authority.””
“So you became above the law?””
His eyes hardened.
“I became what people needed.””
“No.””
I shook my head.
“You became what frightened people allowed.””
The words hit him.
“You think criminals are the only ones who destroy communities?””
He leaned forward.
“Sometimes you have to break rules to save people.””
“And who decides which rules can be broken?””
He didn’t answer.
Because he knew.
The answer was him.
The silence was broken by a knock.
An officer entered.
“Sheriff?””
Voss looked up.
“What?””
The officer hesitated.
“Federal agents are outside.””
Everyone froze.
Voss looked at me.
“You called them.””
“No.””
That surprised him.
“I didn’t need to.””
I held up my phone.
“The moment you arrested me, the court system knew.””
His face changed.
“You planned this.””
“I prepared for the possibility.””
A small difference.
But an important one.
The officer stepped back.
“Sheriff, they’re requesting your presence.””
Voss stood slowly.
Then he smiled.
Not because he had won.
Because he had one last weapon.
“You still don’t understand.””
I watched him carefully.
“What?””
He looked toward the door.
“The badge you’re so proud of…”
He pointed toward my identification.
“…isn’t the only badge that matters.””
My eyes narrowed.
“What are you talking about?””
He walked past me.
Then stopped.
“Ask Chief Judge Eleanor Hayes why she never told you the entire truth.””
My heart skipped.
“What truth?””
He smiled.
“The reason those complaints reached you.””
He continued walking.
“The reason you came here.””
He reached the doorway.
“It wasn’t random.””
The federal agents entered.
Voss surrendered without resistance.
But his final words stayed with me.
Because when I later contacted Chief Judge Hayes, she answered after only one ring.
And before I could ask a single question, she said:
“Amara… I was hoping you would never find out.””
I stood completely still.
“Find out what?””
There was a long silence.
Then she whispered:
“Who sent those complaints.””
I tightened my grip on the phone.
“Who?””
Her answer made everything stop.
Because the person who had exposed Sheriff Voss…
May you like
was the last person I ever expected.
And they had been watching me from the beginning.
