Chapter 8: The Secret My Grandfather Took To His Grave

The phone continued ringing.

Nobody reached for it.

Nobody even breathed.

The name glowing on the screen felt impossible.

*Grandpa’s Lawyer.*

My grandfather had been dead for almost three years.

His lawyer had no reason to call Vanessa at my sister’s wedding.

Not unless there was something else.

Something nobody had told me.

Robert Hale stared at the phone.

Then he looked at Vanessa.

“Answer it.””

Vanessa shook her head.

“No.””

Her voice was barely audible.

“Why not?””

She looked around the room.

At the guests.

At Graham.

At my father.

At me.

Because she knew.

Everyone finally knew.

She wasn’t afraid of the call.

She was afraid of what the call would reveal.

Robert picked up the phone.

“Hello?””

The ballroom was so quiet that everyone heard the voice on the other end.

“Is this Vanessa Bennett’s phone?””

Robert glanced at her.

“Yes. Who is this?””

“This is Arthur Whitmore, legal representative for the Bennett estate.””

My heart stopped.

Arthur Whitmore.

My grandfather’s lawyer.

The man who had handled everything after his death.

The man my father said had “disappeared” after the estate paperwork was completed.

“What do you need?”” Robert asked.

There was a pause.

Then the lawyer said:

“I need to know why Vanessa Bennett is at Rosewood Estate wearing a wedding dress.””

Everyone looked at Vanessa.

Her face went white.

Robert frowned.

“Explain.””

Another pause.

Then Arthur spoke.

“Because according to the documents I have, Vanessa Bennett should not have been anywhere near this family’s trust.””

My stomach tightened.

“What documents?”” I asked.

The lawyer heard my voice.

“Is that Claire?””

I stepped forward.

“Yes.””

His tone changed.

“Claire, I’m sorry.””

Those words scared me more than anything else.

People only apologized when something had already gone wrong.

“What happened?””

The lawyer sighed.

“Your grandfather discovered someone attempted to manipulate the inheritance before his death.””

My eyes moved toward Vanessa.

“Her.””

The lawyer didn’t answer immediately.

That silence confirmed it.

“Yes.””

Vanessa covered her face.

Graham looked at her.

“You tried to steal from your own family?””

“No.””

The answer came quickly.

Too quickly.

“I didn’t steal anything.””

Robert looked at the documents.

“You signed transfer papers.””

Vanessa looked at him.

“I didn’t know what they were.””

Nobody believed her.

Not even her.

The lawyer continued.

“Vanessa contacted me nineteen months before your grandfather passed away.””

My eyebrows pulled together.

“Nineteen months?””

“Yes.””

“What did she want?””

A pause.

“Information.””

“About what?””

“About the trust.””

My hands went cold.

“She knew?””

“She suspected.””

I looked at Vanessa.

“How?””

She didn’t answer.

My father did.

“Because I told her.””

Everyone turned toward him.

My father looked exhausted.

Like he had been carrying this weight for years.

“You?””

He nodded.

“I made a mistake.””

I laughed softly.

“A mistake?””

He looked at me.

“I thought I was protecting the family.””

The same excuse.

Everyone had one.

Protecting the family.

That phrase had destroyed more lives than any enemy ever could.

“You told Vanessa about the inheritance.””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

My father looked down.

“Because she asked.””

I stared at him.

“That’s it?””

“She was my daughter.””

I looked at him.

“So was I.””

The words hurt him.

Good.

He needed to hear them.

The lawyer interrupted.

“Mr. Bennett, this is not the time to revisit old mistakes.””

My father closed his eyes.

The lawyer continued.

“Your grandfather learned what happened.””

“What happened?”” I asked.

“Vanessa attempted to convince Daniel to divorce you before the trust activation date.””

My chest tightened.

The pieces finally connected.

The divorce.

The affair.

The lies.

The timing.

Everything.

“What was the activation date?””

Robert looked at the document.

“Your thirty-second birthday.””

I frowned.

“My birthday?””

The lawyer answered.

“Yes.””

I felt dizzy.

“Why?””

“Because your grandfather believed you would need financial protection by then.””

I looked confused.

“Why would he think that?””

Nobody answered.

Then my mother spoke.

“He knew.””

I turned toward her.

“Knew what?””

She looked at me with tears in her eyes.

“He knew Daniel was going to leave.””

The room went silent.

I stared at her.

“You knew too.””

She nodded.

“I suspected.””

My voice dropped.

“And nobody told me.””

My mother cried quietly.

“I thought I was helping you.””

“How?””

“I thought if you didn’t know the truth, you could move on.””

I looked around.

At my family.

The people who had spent years making decisions about my life without me.

“You all kept me in the dark.””

Nobody denied it.

Because they couldn’t.

The truth was finally too heavy to carry.

Vanessa suddenly spoke.

“You think I’m the only one who lied?””

Everyone turned.

She laughed bitterly.

“Look at them.””

She pointed at my parents.

“They hid everything.””

“Vanessa.””

“No.””

Her voice cracked.

“She’s standing there acting like she’s innocent.””

She looked at me.

“But everyone made choices.””

I stared at her.

“You made the biggest one.””

Her face changed.

“Yes.””

The admission surprised everyone.

Even her.

For the first time, Vanessa wasn’t defending herself.

She was tired.

“I was scared.””

I shook my head.

“You were greedy.””

Her eyes filled.

“Maybe.””

The honesty was almost worse.

She looked toward the window.

“I spent my whole life feeling like I was the disappointing one.””

I said nothing.

“You were always the responsible daughter.””

She laughed quietly.

“You always knew what to say. You always did the right thing.””

“That doesn’t excuse what you did.””

“I know.””

“Then why?””

She looked at me.

“Because I thought if I got what Grandpa left behind, everyone would finally see me.””

My heart sank.

Because buried beneath all the cruelty was something sad.

A person who had spent her whole life chasing approval.

And destroyed everyone around her trying to get it.

But sadness did not erase damage.

It never did.

Graham stepped away from her.

“I don’t know who I married.””

Vanessa looked at him.

“Graham…”

“No.””

He shook his head.

“I loved someone who didn’t exist.””

That seemed to hurt her more than anything else.

The wedding ring on her finger suddenly looked heavy.

The symbol of a marriage that had lasted less than an hour before collapsing.

Robert received another call.

He answered quickly.

Then his expression changed.

“What?””

Everyone watched.

“What happened?”” I asked.

He looked at me.

“The security team found something.””

“What?””

He hesitated.

“A hidden recording device.””

My blood ran cold.

“Where?””

His eyes moved toward Lily.

Not her.

Her purse.

I immediately stepped in front of my daughter.

“No.””

Robert raised his hands.

“Claire, nobody is accusing Lily.””

“Then why are you looking at her?””

“Because the device was found near where she was sitting.””

My stomach dropped.

Vanessa whispered:

“She recorded everything.””

The room turned toward her.

“What?””

She looked terrified.

“She recorded everything from the beginning.””

I stared at her.

“How would you know?””

Her face changed.

Because she realized she had revealed something.

“You knew about the recording.””

She said nothing.

“You knew before tonight.””

Vanessa looked away.

That was all the answer I needed.

Robert walked toward us carefully.

“Claire, we need to talk privately.””

“No.””

Everyone looked at me.

“No more private conversations.””

My voice shook.

“No more secrets.””

I looked at my family.

“My entire life has been controlled by things people decided I didn’t deserve to know.””

I took Lily’s hand.

“Whatever is happening…”

I looked at Robert.

“Everyone hears it.””

He nodded.

Slowly, he opened the evidence bag.

Inside was a small recording device.

Not Lily’s.

Not from her purse.

A different one.

Older.

Hidden.

My father stared at it.

And then whispered:

“That’s impossible.””

I looked at him.

“Why?””

His face lost color.

“Because I destroyed that.””

A chill moved through me.

“What?””

He looked at the device.

Then at my mother.

Then at Vanessa.

“That recording…”

He swallowed.

“Was from the night your grandfather died.””

Nobody moved.

The ballroom disappeared.

All I could hear was my heartbeat.

My grandfather’s death.

The inheritance.

The secrets.

The lies.

They were all connected.

Robert looked at the device.

“It contains the final conversation your grandfather ever had.””

I felt Lily’s hand tighten around mine.

Then Robert pressed one button.

Static filled the ballroom.

A few seconds passed.

Then an old, weak voice came through the speaker.

My grandfather.

But he wasn’t speaking to me.

He was speaking to someone else.

Someone in this room.

“I know what you did.””

A woman gasped.

My blood turned cold.

Because I recognized the voice answering him.

Vanessa.

The recording continued.

“You can’t take this from Claire.””

My grandfather sounded angry.

“After everything I did for you…”

Vanessa’s voice shook.

“I just wanted what was fair.””

My grandfather replied:

“No.””

A pause.

“You wanted what was mine to give.””

The room froze.

Then came Vanessa’s final sentence.

A sentence nobody expected.

A sentence that changed everything.

“I didn’t mean for Claire to get hurt.””

I looked at Vanessa.

Then the recording continued.

“I only asked Daniel to scare her.””

My heart stopped.

And then my grandfather said:

“Scare her?””

May you like

His voice became colder.

“You tried to have my granddaughter killed.””
