Chapter 6: The Inheritance They Tried To Steal

For several seconds, I forgot how to breathe.

Lily.

My eight-year-old daughter.

The little girl standing beside me in a yellow cardigan, holding a tiny white purse, had been named in my grandfather’s will.

Not as a mistake.

Not as a footnote.

As an heir.

I looked at my father.

“What did you say?””

His expression broke.

“Lily was the second heir.””

I shook my head.

“No.””

The word came out automatically.

“No, that doesn’t make sense.””

My father stepped closer.

“Claire—”

“No.””

I looked down at my daughter.

She was staring at all of us with wide eyes.

She didn’t understand the legal documents.

She didn’t understand the secrets.

She only understood that the adults around her were angry and scared.

And that broke something inside me.

I pulled her closer.

“She’s a child.””

“I know.””

“Then why is everyone talking about her like she’s part of some battle?””

My father’s face tightened.

“Because your grandfather wanted to protect her.””

I looked at him.

“From what?””

Nobody answered.

That was becoming the most terrifying part.

The truth was always surrounded by silence.

Vanessa suddenly laughed.

Not because anything was funny.

Because she was losing control.

“This is ridiculous.””

Everyone turned toward her.

She wiped a tear from her cheek.

“You’re all acting like I’m some villain.””

I stared at her.

“Are you saying you’re not?””

Her expression hardened.

“I made mistakes.””

“Mistakes?””

“You don’t understand.””

“No, Vanessa.””

My voice was calm.

“Apparently, I understand less than everyone else in this room.””

Graham looked at her.

“What did you know about the inheritance?””

Vanessa looked at him.

Nothing.

No answer.

That silence told him everything.

“You knew?””

His voice was barely above a whisper.

She reached for his hand.

“Graham, listen—”

He pulled away.

“No.””

The pain on his face was obvious.

Not anger.

Not yet.

Betrayal.

Because he had just realized the woman he married had been keeping secrets before they even said their vows.

My father opened the folder.

“There are documents here proving your grandfather’s intentions.””

He looked at me.

“Your grandfather knew the family would fight over his estate.””

I frowned.

“Why?””

My father hesitated.

Then he looked at my mother.

That was when I knew.

My mother knew too.

“Mom.””

She looked away.

“Tell me.””

Patricia’s lips trembled.

“Your grandfather never trusted Vanessa.””

The room went silent.

Vanessa’s face changed.

“What?””

My mother swallowed.

“He loved all his grandchildren.””

She looked at Lily.

“But he noticed things.””

“What things?”” I asked.

My mother’s eyes filled.

“Vanessa always wanted what other people had.””

A bitter smile crossed my face.

“Some things never change.””

Vanessa stepped forward.

“You’re blaming me because Grandpa saw me differently?””

“No,” my mother said quietly.

That surprised everyone.

Because my mother almost never challenged Vanessa.

“He was worried because you didn’t just want things.””

My mother looked at her daughter.

“You wanted control.””

Vanessa stared.

“How dare you.””

My mother flinched.

But she continued.

“Your grandfather changed the will after he saw what happened with Claire.””

My stomach tightened.

“What happened with me?””

My father answered.

“Your divorce.””

I looked at Daniel.

He lowered his eyes.

My father continued.

“Your grandfather suspected Daniel didn’t leave for the reasons he claimed.””

Daniel closed his eyes.

“He was right.””

I turned toward him.

“You knew?””

Daniel looked at me.

“I knew something was wrong.””

“Something?””

My voice rose.

“You knew my sister was involved.””

“Yes.””

“And you still let me believe I was the problem?””

His silence was painful.

“Yes.””

Lily covered her ears slightly.

I immediately lowered my voice.

I hated that she was hearing this.

I hated that the adults in her life had created a world where she needed to hear words like betrayal.

Daniel looked at her.

“I’m sorry.””

Lily didn’t respond.

She just held my hand tighter.

That hurt him.

Good.

Some apologies needed consequences.

My father turned another page.

“There’s more.””

I looked at him.

“What else could there be?””

His expression was serious.

“The inheritance was not just money.””

I frowned.

“What do you mean?””

“Your grandfather owned several properties and investments.””

“Okay.””

“But he also owned a company.””

I stared.

“I thought he sold it.””

My father shook his head.

“No.””

A strange feeling moved through me.

“Then why did everyone say he sold it?””

My mother looked down.

Vanessa looked away.

Because everyone knew.

Everyone except me.

My father continued.

“Because after his death, someone attempted to transfer ownership.””

“Who?””

Nobody answered.

Then my phone buzzed.

I already knew.

Another message.

I opened it.

*Ask Vanessa why she needed Daniel to make you leave before your grandfather’s trust became active.*

My heart stopped.

I looked at Vanessa.

She saw my face.

And she knew.

“What did they tell you?””

The question slipped out.

I stared at her.

“You’re scared of whoever is messaging me.””

She didn’t respond.

That was enough.

I stepped closer.

“Who are you afraid of?””

Her eyes moved toward the doorway.

A tiny movement.

But I saw it.

Someone else was here.

Someone she expected.

I followed her gaze.

Near the entrance stood a man in a dark suit.

I didn’t recognize him.

But Vanessa did.

The color disappeared from her face.

My father noticed too.

“Who is that?””

Vanessa whispered:

“He wasn’t supposed to come.””

My stomach tightened.

“Who?””

Nobody answered.

The man slowly walked toward us.

The guests moved aside.

He carried himself like someone who knew he belonged there.

When he reached our group, he looked directly at me.

“Claire Bennett?””

I nodded slowly.

“Yes.””

He held out a business card.

“My name is Robert Hale.””

My father’s face changed.

He recognized him.

“An attorney?””

Robert nodded.

“I represent the Bennett family estate.””

I looked at my father.

Then at Vanessa.

Then back at him.

“Why are you here?””

Robert glanced around the ballroom.

“At first, I was only supposed to deliver a letter.””

“A letter to who?””

His eyes moved to Lily.

My heart sank.

“To her.””

I stepped in front of my daughter.

“No.””

Robert looked at me gently.

“Ms. Bennett, your grandfather left very specific instructions.””

“I don’t care.””

“I think you will.””

He opened his briefcase.

“Because the instructions were created for this exact situation.””

The room went quiet.

“What situation?””

Robert looked at Vanessa.

Then at Daniel.

Then at my mother.

And finally at me.

“The possibility that members of the family would attempt to manipulate the inheritance.””

Nobody moved.

Then Robert handed me an envelope.

My name was written on the front.

Not Lily’s.

Mine.

My fingers shook as I opened it.

Inside was a handwritten letter.

My grandfather’s handwriting.

The man who used to make pancakes with me every Sunday.

The man who told me I was stronger than I knew.

I read the first line.

And my entire world changed.

*Dear Claire, if you are reading this, then someone has tried to take away what was meant to protect you and Lily.*

I looked up.

Vanessa was staring at the letter.

Not curious.

Terrified.

I kept reading.

The next sentence made my blood run cold.

*The person responsible is someone you love.*

I slowly lowered the letter.

Because suddenly I understood.

The inheritance wasn’t the reason they destroyed my marriage.

The inheritance was the reason they destroyed my life.

And then Robert said the words that made everyone turn toward Vanessa.

“Mr. Bennett also left evidence proving who attempted to access the trust before the rightful heir could claim it.””

Vanessa whispered:

“No.””

Robert opened another folder.

“And the person who signed those documents…”

May you like

He looked directly at her.

“…was Vanessa Bennett.””
