Chapter 5: The Signature That Wasn’t Mine

For a few seconds, nobody moved.

Not Lauren.

Not Richard.

Not me.

The only sound in the ballroom was the faint hum of the air conditioning above us.

A wedding hall that had been filled with music and celebration now felt like a courtroom.

And everyone was waiting for a verdict.

I looked at Lauren.

“No.””

My voice came out quieter than I expected.

She stared at me.

“Daniel…”

“No.””

I shook my head.

“You’re saying you signed divorce papers before we even got married?””

Her eyes filled with tears.

“I didn’t know what they were.””

The answer was immediate.

Too immediate.

I studied her face.

The woman standing in front of me looked devastated.

But I couldn’t tell if she was devastated because she had been exposed…

or because she had lost me.

“What do you mean you didn’t know?””

Lauren looked at her father.

“Dad?””

Richard’s expression hardened.

“Don’t do this.””

Her eyebrows pulled together.

“What did you make me sign?””

That question changed everything.

Because for the first time that night, Lauren wasn’t standing beside him.

She was standing against him.

Richard looked around.

“You’re confused.””

“No.””

Her voice cracked.

“I asked you a question.””

The confidence he had carried all night started disappearing.

“Lauren, this is not something we discuss here.””

I almost laughed.

Again.

Not here.

Everything was always not here.

The truth was always too inconvenient to be spoken in front of witnesses.

But the damage was already done.

I held the phone tightly.

“Claire.””

“Yes?””

“Can you explain?””

There was a pause.

Then Claire spoke.

“The divorce agreement was hidden inside a larger legal package.””

Lauren looked confused.

“A package?””

“Yes.””

Claire continued.

“Richard told Lauren it was standard paperwork required for marriage protection.””

My eyes moved to Richard.

“Marriage protection?””

Claire sighed.

“That’s what he called it.””

Lauren’s face changed.

“I remember.””

Everyone looked at her.

She covered her mouth.

“I remember signing something before the engagement party.””

Richard stepped forward.

“Lauren.””

“No.””

She backed away.

“You told me it was about my inheritance.””

“It was.””

“Then why was my signature on a divorce agreement?””

Richard didn’t answer.

And that was the first time I saw Lauren look at her father with fear.

Not disappointment.

Not anger.

Fear.

Because she was realizing something I had already accepted.

She wasn’t the only person who had been manipulated.

Richard had been controlling both sides of the game.

I looked at the document in my hand.

“Claire, who prepared this agreement?””

“I did.””

The answer made Lauren look at the phone.

“You?””

“I didn’t create the terms,” Claire said quickly.

“I only organized the files.””

“What were the terms?””

Silence.

Then Claire answered.

“Lauren would receive a settlement.””

“How much?””

“Five million dollars.””

The room exploded.

Whispers.

Gasps.

Someone actually said, “Five million?””

Lauren looked sick.

“No.””

She shook her head.

“No, that’s not possible.””

Richard’s face turned cold.

“Everyone needs to calm down.””

I looked at him.

“Five million dollars to divorce me?””

He stared back.

“You’re misunderstanding.””

“How?””

“Because the money was not the point.””

I stared at him.

“Then what was?””

Richard said nothing.

Claire answered for him.

“Control.””

The word hung in the air.

“He wanted Lauren to marry you, gain access to your trust, then separate before anyone suspected anything.””

I looked at Lauren.

She looked like she was going to collapse.

“Dad…”

Richard ignored her.

“Daniel, you’re letting a former employee manipulate you.””

I turned toward him.

“Are you saying Claire is lying?””

“Yes.””

“Then why does she know about documents you created?””

His mouth tightened.

“She worked for me.””

“That means she knows your business.””

“It means she has an agenda.””

I nodded slowly.

“Everyone has an agenda, don’t they?””

Richard frowned.

“What?””

I looked around the room.

“At this wedding, everyone wanted something.””

My eyes moved to Lauren.

“She wanted a future.””

Then Richard.

“He wanted control.””

Then I looked at my mother.

“And she wanted me to be happy.””

My mother looked away.

Because even after everything, she was still trying not to make this about herself.

That broke my heart.

I walked toward her.

“Mom.””

She looked up.

“I’m sorry.””

Her eyes immediately filled.

“Daniel, please don’t apologize to me.””

“I should have listened.””

She shook her head.

“You were in love.””

I swallowed.

“No.””

I looked back at Lauren.

“I was in love with someone I thought existed.””

The words hurt.

Because they were true.

Lauren stepped toward me.

“Daniel, please.””

I didn’t move.

“I need you to answer one question.””

She stopped.

“Did you know about my trust before we met?””

Her face went pale.

A long silence followed.

And somehow, that silence hurt more than a lie.

“Lauren.””

She looked down.

“Yes.””

The room reacted instantly.

I closed my eyes.

“How long?””

“Before our first date.””

The pain was different this time.

Not shock.

Not anger.

Just disappointment.

I remembered our first meeting.

A charity event.

She had walked toward me wearing a simple black dress.

She had laughed at my terrible jokes.

She had told me she didn’t care about money.

“You know what I like about you?”” she had said.

“What?””

“You don’t act like you’re better than everyone else.””

I thought she saw me.

Now I wondered if she was simply studying me.

“How did you know?””

She whispered:

“My father.””

Of course.

Richard.

I looked at him.

“You told her.””

He didn’t deny it.

“She needed to understand your situation.””

“My situation?””

“Yes.””

I laughed bitterly.

“You mean my value.””

Richard’s expression remained cold.

“Don’t pretend wealth doesn’t matter.””

“I’m not.””

I stepped closer.

“I’m saying character matters more.””

He looked almost amused.

“That’s something poor people say to make themselves feel better.””

The room went silent.

Even Lauren looked shocked.

Because that sentence revealed who Richard really was.

My mother stood.

“Daniel.””

I turned.

She looked at me.

“Let’s go.””

And for the first time all night, I listened.

I walked toward the exit with my mother beside me.

But before I reached the doors, Lauren called my name.

“Daniel.””

I stopped.

I didn’t turn around.

“Please.””

Her voice broke.

“I know I hurt you.””

I waited.

“But I did love you.””

I closed my eyes.

Because part of me still wanted to believe her.

That was the cruelest part.

Not knowing she lied.

Knowing a small piece of me still cared.

I turned slightly.

“Then why did you let him do this?””

Lauren cried silently.

“I was scared.””

“Of what?””

She looked at her father.

And that answer told me everything.

“Of losing my family.””

I nodded slowly.

“So you chose them.””

She shook her head.

“No.””

But I interrupted.

“You did.””

I walked away.

Outside the ballroom, the cold night air hit my face.

The decorations from the wedding reception were still visible through the glass doors.

The flowers.

The lights.

The life I thought I was about to begin.

My phone was still in my hand.

Claire was waiting.

“Daniel?””

“Yes?””

“There’s something else you need to know.””

I closed my eyes.

“How can there be more?””

Her voice became quiet.

“Because the divorce agreement wasn’t the first plan.””

I frowned.

“What does that mean?””

A pause.

Then she said:

“Richard had another person involved.””

“Who?””

“I don’t know their full identity.””

My grip tightened.

“But I know one thing.””

“What?””

“The person who was supposed to help destroy you…”

She hesitated.

“…was someone you trusted.””

I looked back through the glass doors.

At the people still standing inside.

At the faces I had known for years.

And suddenly, I realized the betrayal wasn’t just coming from Lauren’s family.

It had been standing much closer than I ever imagined.

Then Claire sent me one final message.

A photograph.

I opened it.

And my blood ran cold.

May you like

Because the person standing beside Richard in the image…

was someone from my own family.
