Chapter 4: The Marriage Contract

The ballroom went completely silent after Claire’s words.

Your marriage was never supposed to last long enough for you to find out the truth.

The sentence repeated in my mind like an alarm I couldn’t shut off.

I stared at Richard Whitmore.

For the first time that night, he looked afraid.

Not angry.

Not offended.

Afraid.

And that fear told me Claire wasn’t lying.

“Who is this woman?”” Lauren asked sharply.

Her voice cut through the room.

I looked at her.

“She says she worked for your father.””

Lauren’s face changed instantly.

Just for a second.

But I saw it.

Recognition.

She knew exactly who Claire was.

“Give me the phone,” Lauren said.

I stepped back.

“No.””

“Daniel, you don’t know what she’s talking about.””

“Then why do you look like you do?””

Lauren froze.

Her lips parted.

Nothing came out.

I turned away from her and put the phone back to my ear.

“Claire, are you still there?””

“Yes.””

“Tell me everything.””

There was a pause.

Then she sighed.

“I’ve been trying to find a way to contact you for weeks.””

“Why?””

“Because I knew tonight was the deadline.””

The word caught my attention.

“Deadline?””

“Yes.””

I looked around the ballroom.

Everyone was watching.

My family.

My friends.

Lauren’s family.

All of them waiting for the truth.

“What deadline?””

Claire’s voice became quieter.

“The moment you signed the marriage certificate.””

My stomach tightened.

“What happens when I sign?””

Nobody moved.

Even Lauren seemed frozen.

Claire continued.

“Your father-in-law gains temporary control over the financial accounts connected to your trust.””

“That’s impossible.””

“I wish it was.””

I looked at Mr. Harris, my father’s attorney.

He avoided my eyes.

That scared me more than anything.

“Mr. Harris?””

He slowly looked up.

“Is that true?””

The entire room turned toward him.

He took a long breath.

“Daniel…”

“Is it true?””

His silence lasted too long.

Finally, he nodded.

“Part of it.””

A wave of whispers moved through the ballroom.

I felt my chest tighten.

“Part of it?””

Mr. Harris walked closer.

“Your father created certain protections around the trust. One of them involved marriage.””

I stared at him.

“My father?””

“Yes.””

“That doesn’t make sense.””

He nodded.

“I know.””

“Why would my father make something like that?””

Mr. Harris looked at my mother.

She lowered her head.

And suddenly, I understood.

There was more.

There was always more.

“My father knew something?””

Nobody answered.

“Mom?””

My mother’s eyes filled with tears.

“Your father was careful, Daniel.””

“That’s not an answer.””

She looked at me.

“He was worried.””

“About what?””

She hesitated.

“About people loving what he could provide instead of who he was.””

The words hit me.

Because my father had died when I was twenty-two.

Before I had money.

Before I had inherited anything.

Before anyone knew my last name meant something.

He had always told me the same thing.

“Money doesn’t reveal character, Daniel. It reveals priorities.””

At the time, I thought it was just advice.

Now it sounded like a warning.

I looked at Lauren.

“Did you know?””

She shook her head.

“No.””

“Don’t lie to me.””

“I’m not!””

Her voice cracked.

“I knew about your trust, but I didn’t know about any contract.””

“Your father did.””

She looked at Richard.

He looked away.

That was enough.

I turned back to Claire.

“Why are you telling me this?””

Her voice trembled.

“Because I helped create the documents.””

The room became still.

“What?””

“I worked in legal operations at Whitmore Holdings. I prepared agreements, reviewed contracts, organized files.””

“And this one?””

“Yes.””

“Why would you help them?””

A long silence followed.

Then she answered.

“Because I didn’t know what it was at first.””

I listened carefully.

“When I started working there, I thought Whitmore Holdings was just aggressive. That’s how wealthy families often operate.””

She paused.

“But then I saw the pattern.””

“What pattern?””

“Richard didn’t just make business deals.””

The fear returned to her voice.

“He collected people.””

A chill went through me.

“What does that mean?””

“It means he looked for situations where someone needed something from him.””

I looked at Lauren.

Claire continued.

“Money. Connections. Reputation. Security.””

My fingers tightened around the phone.

“And me?””

“Yes.””

The answer was immediate.

“He saw you as the perfect opportunity.””

I closed my eyes for a moment.

I hated how much it made sense.

The expensive dinners.

The sudden interest from Lauren after she learned about my family.

The way her father always asked about my plans.

I remembered the first time Richard invited me to his office.

I thought it was a father wanting to know the man his daughter loved.

Now I wondered if it was an interview.

He had poured me whiskey.

Asked about my goals.

Asked about my finances.

Asked about my family.

I thought he was interested.

He was calculating.

“What was supposed to happen after the wedding?”” I asked.

Claire hesitated.

“Daniel…”

“Tell me.””

“They were going to pressure you into transferring management rights.””

“To who?””

“Whitmore Holdings.””

I looked at Richard.

He didn’t deny it.

Not anymore.

Lauren whispered, “Dad…”

Richard finally spoke.

“Enough.””

Everyone looked at him.

His voice had changed.

The polite businessman was gone.

“This has gone too far.””

I stared at him.

“No.””

He shook his head.

“You’re making a mistake.””

“A mistake?””

“Yes.””

He stepped forward.

“You think you understand everything because you found a document.””

I laughed quietly.

“You mean the document you signed?””

His face hardened.

“You have no idea how the world works.””

“And you do?””

“Yes.””

His confidence returned.

“I know how to protect my family.””

I looked at Lauren.

“Your family?””

“Yes.””

He pointed slightly toward me.

“You think I wanted your money?””

“Didn’t you?””

“No.””

His answer surprised me.

For a second, I wondered if I was wrong.

Then he continued.

“I wanted stability.””

I frowned.

“What?””

Richard looked around.

“You’re acting like I’m some villain who planned to steal from you.””

He stepped closer.

“I was trying to make sure my daughter married someone who could protect her future.””

I stared at him.

“You mean someone wealthy.””

“I mean someone responsible.””

I shook my head.

“No.””

His eyes narrowed.

“You’re emotional.””

“No.””

I looked at Lauren.

“She married my bank account before she married me.””

Lauren’s face crumpled.

“That’s not fair.””

“Isn’t it?””

She wiped her tears.

“I loved you before I knew about the trust.””

“Then why did your father need a contract?””

She had no answer.

Again.

That silence hurt more than any confession.

The DJ quietly stepped away.

Guests began leaving their tables.

Some people whispered.

Others avoided looking at Lauren.

The wedding was disappearing around us.

But I didn’t feel victorious.

I felt empty.

Because the hardest part wasn’t discovering Lauren lied.

The hardest part was realizing how much I wanted her to prove me wrong.

I wanted her to fight for us.

Not the wedding.

Not the money.

Us.

But she didn’t.

She stood beside her father.

And that choice said everything.

Then Claire spoke again.

“Daniel?””

I raised the phone.

“Yes?””

“There’s something else.””

I closed my eyes.

Of course there was.

“What?””

“I didn’t tell you because I thought it would be too much.””

“What is it?””

Her voice became barely audible.

“The marriage contract wasn’t the only document.””

My heart sank.

“What other document?””

A pause.

Then:

“A divorce agreement.””

The room seemed to tilt.

“What?””

“Richard had one prepared before the wedding.””

I stared at Lauren.

She looked confused.

But Richard didn’t.

He looked terrified.

“Why?””

Claire whispered:

“Because he wanted Lauren to leave you after she gained access to your assets.””

A cold silence fell.

Lauren’s face went pale.

“That’s impossible.””

I looked at her.

“You didn’t know?””

She looked at her father.

And for the first time that night…

Lauren looked betrayed too.

Richard immediately stepped forward.

“Daniel, don’t listen to her.””

But it was too late.

Because Claire had one final thing to say.

Something that made even Lauren step away from her own father.

“Daniel…”

Her voice shook.

“The divorce papers were signed by someone already.””

I swallowed.

“Who?””

The answer came slowly.

May you like

And when she said the name, the entire world seemed to stop.

“Lauren Whitmore.””
