Chapter 8: The Secret Behind Tyler

The name on the document belonged to Tyler’s biological mother.

A woman named Megan.

I had never heard that name before.

Not once.

Not in ten years.

Rachel had always told everyone Tyler’s mother had passed away when he was young.

But according to the papers…

That wasn’t true.

Tyler stared at the document.

“She’s alive?””

My father nodded slowly.

“She has been.””

Rachel’s face hardened.

“This is ridiculous.””

Tyler looked at her.

“Mom?””

She ignored him.

“You’re believing paperwork over me?””

My father looked exhausted.

“I’m believing facts.””

Rachel laughed.

A sharp, angry sound.

“You all think you know everything.””

I stepped closer.

“Then explain.””

She looked at me.

For once, she didn’t have an answer.

Because lies are powerful until someone asks the right question.

My father opened another envelope.

Inside were letters.

Old ones.

Letters from Megan.

She had been trying to contact Tyler for years.

Rachel had hidden every single one.

Tyler read one.

His hands started shaking.

“She wrote to me?””

My father nodded.

“She never stopped.””

Tyler looked at Rachel.

“Why?””

Rachel’s expression softened for a moment.

Then disappeared.

“Because she wasn’t good enough.””

Tyler stepped back.

“That’s why you kept her away?””

“She abandoned you.””

“No.””

Tyler’s voice was louder.

“You abandoned her.””

The room went quiet.

Because Tyler finally saw what I had seen.

Rachel didn’t protect people.

She controlled them.

My father looked at Rachel.

“Why did you do all of this?””

Rachel stared at him.

Then she laughed.

“You want the truth?””

Nobody answered.

She walked around the room slowly.

“I spent my entire life watching other people get lucky.””

Her voice became sharper.

“Emma had a father who adored her. Tyler had a mother who wanted him. Everyone had someone.””

I frowned.

“And you?””

Her face changed.

“I had nobody.””

For a second, I saw the person beneath the cruelty.

A wounded person.

But pain did not excuse what she did.

Rachel continued.

“So I learned something.””

She pointed at me.

“People don’t protect the innocent. They protect whoever needs them more.””

I shook my head.

“That’s not true.””

She smiled.

“It worked.””

And that was the worst part.

It had.

For years.

My father looked devastated.

“I loved you.””

Rachel looked at him.

“No. You loved the version of me you wanted to see.””

Nobody spoke.

Then Tyler asked the question that broke everyone.

“Did you ever love me?””

Rachel looked at him.

A long silence followed.

And for the first time, she looked uncertain.

“I raised you.””

“That’s not what I asked.””

Her eyes moved away.

Tyler nodded slowly.

That answer was enough.

He left the room.

I followed him outside.

He sat on the porch steps.

“I thought she was the only person who chose me.””

I sat beside him.

“She chose you.””

He looked at me.

“Did she?””

I didn’t know what to say.

Because sometimes the hardest truth was realizing someone could love you and still hurt you.

The next few weeks changed everything.

Rachel moved out.

My father started therapy.

Tyler began rebuilding his relationship with Megan.

And I started rebuilding myself.

Not quickly.

Not perfectly.

But honestly.

One afternoon, my father came to my room.

He held an old box.

“I found this in storage.””

I opened it.

Inside were things from my childhood.

Drawings.

Photos.

A small bracelet.

And a letter.

My mother’s handwriting.

My hands shook.

“Why didn’t I see this before?””

My father looked away.

“Rachel hid it.””

I opened the letter.

It wasn’t long.

But every word felt like my mother was sitting beside me.

*Emma, if you’re reading this, you’re old enough to understand that families are not created by blood alone. They are created by people who choose you every day.*

I cried.

Because those were the words I needed years ago.

At the bottom of the letter was one final sentence.

*There is something your father has never told you.*

I looked up.

My father went pale.

“Dad?””

He knew.

He knew what came next.

“What?””

He sat down slowly.

“Your mother asked me to tell you when you were ready.””

My heart started racing.

“Tell me what?””

He looked at the letter.

Then at me.

“She didn’t want you to know because she was afraid you would blame yourself.””

“Blame myself for what?””

My father took a deep breath.

“Your mother’s death wasn’t an accident.””

May you like

The room went silent.

And suddenly, every secret we uncovered was connected to something much darker.
