Chapter 6: The Truth Hidden in My Name

I stared at the words on my phone until they stopped looking like words.

*Emma will never find out that she isn’t actually your daughter.*

For a few seconds, I couldn’t breathe.

Not because I didn’t understand.

Because I understood too quickly.

My entire life rearranged itself in one sentence.

Every birthday where my dad seemed distracted.

Every time Rachel said I was “different.””

Every moment I wondered why Tyler was treated like someone precious while I felt like someone tolerated.

I had spent years asking myself what was wrong with me.

Now I was staring at the possibility that the answer had nothing to do with me.

I grabbed my phone from the floor and played the recording again.

Rachel’s voice filled my room.

“Don’t worry. Emma will never find out that she isn’t actually your daughter.””

A man answered.

My heart stopped.

Because I knew that voice.

My father.

“Rachel, we agreed we weren’t going to talk about this.””

I covered my mouth.

My father knew.

The recording continued.

“She deserves to know,” Rachel said.

“No,” Dad replied.

“Not like this.””

“Then when? When she’s forty? Fifty?””

There was a pause.

Then my father spoke quietly.

“She’s my daughter.””

Rachel laughed.

A cold, humorless laugh.

“She’s not yours.””

I felt something break inside me.

Not loudly.

Not dramatically.

Just quietly.

Like a glass cracking from the inside.

I listened as they argued.

Rachel accused my dad of living in denial.

My dad accused her of using the truth as a weapon.

But neither one of them denied it.

Neither one said she was wrong.

I turned off the recording.

Then I sat there in silence.

My whole life had been built on a question I never knew existed.

Who was I?

The next morning, I drove to my aunt’s house.

My father’s older sister, Linda, was the only person in my family who had always treated me like I belonged.

She opened the door and immediately knew something was wrong.

“Emma?””

I stepped inside.

“I need you to tell me the truth.””

Her expression changed.

“What happened?””

I held up my phone.

“I found out Dad isn’t my biological father.””

The color drained from her face.

And that reaction told me everything.

“You knew.””

She looked down.

“Emma…”

“You knew?””

She closed the door slowly.

“I knew there were things your father was trying to protect you from.””

I laughed bitterly.

“Everyone keeps saying they’re protecting me.””

Linda looked at me.

“Sometimes adults confuse hiding something with protecting someone.””

That sentence hurt because it was exactly what had happened.

I sat on her couch.

“Who is my real father?””

She was quiet for a long time.

Then she walked to an old cabinet and pulled out a small box.

Inside were photographs.

Letters.

Things I had never seen.

She handed me a picture.

A young man stood beside my mother.

He had dark hair.

My mother was smiling in a way I hadn’t seen in years.

“That’s Daniel.””

I stared at the photo.

“Who was he?””

Linda sighed.

“Someone your mother loved before she met your father.””

I looked up.

“So Dad knew?””

“Yes.””

“Why would he raise me if I wasn’t his?””

Linda’s eyes softened.

“Because your father loved your mother. And when she passed away, he made a choice.””

“What choice?””

“To be your father anyway.””

I looked back at the picture.

That should have made me feel better.

Instead, it made everything more confusing.

Because if my dad loved me…

Why did he let me feel unwanted for so many years?

I stayed with Linda that night.

Around midnight, my phone rang.

Dad.

I almost didn’t answer.

But I did.

“Emma.””

His voice sounded broken.

“I know you know.””

I closed my eyes.

“Why didn’t you tell me?””

A long silence.

“I was afraid.””

“Afraid of what?””

“That you would look at me differently.””

I swallowed.

“You spent years letting me think I wasn’t enough.””

“I know.””

“No, Dad. You don’t.””

My voice cracked.

“You let me believe everyone else mattered more.””

He didn’t argue.

And somehow, that hurt worse.

“I should have protected you.””

“Yes.””

“I failed you.””

I looked out the window.

The city lights blurred.

Then he said something I never expected.

“Daniel is alive.””

I froze.

“What?””

“He contacted me two years ago.””

My heart started pounding.

“You knew where he was?””

“Yes.””

“And you never told me?””

“I thought I was protecting you.””

I laughed softly.

A painful laugh.

“Everyone keeps saying that.””

My father was quiet.

Then he whispered:

“Rachel knew too.””

I sat up.

“What?””

“She knew Daniel had contacted me.””

“Why?””

My father’s voice lowered.

“Because Rachel was the one who found him.””

I felt cold.

“Why would she do that?””

My father didn’t answer immediately.

Then he said:

“Because she wanted something from him.””

“What?””

The line went silent.

Then my father said:

“Money.””

I stared at the phone.

Rachel wasn’t just hiding my past.

She was using it.

But I still didn’t know how deep the lie went.

Until my father said the next sentence.

“Emma, there’s something else you need to know about Daniel.””

“What?””

“He didn’t leave your mother.””

I stopped breathing.

“What do you mean?””

My father’s voice shook.

“Rachel lied about him.””

The room went completely silent.

Because suddenly, the woman who had spent years making me feel like an outsider wasn’t just hiding a secret.

May you like

She had created one.

And she had destroyed an entire family to keep it buried.
