Chapter 9: The Man Who Never Forgot

I didn't wake anyone.

Not at first.

I sat there staring at the photo.

The room was dark.

The house was quiet.

But suddenly, every shadow felt different.

Someone had been close enough to photograph Lily.

Someone had been watching our family.

Someone knew she remembered.

I went downstairs and checked every lock.

Front door.

Back door.

Windows.

Everything.

Then I heard footsteps behind me.

"Lily?""

I turned.

She stood at the bottom of the stairs wearing pajamas.

My heart dropped.

"What are you doing awake?""

She looked at the phone in my hand.

"Who sent that?""

I immediately locked the screen.

"Nobody.""

She looked at me.

I hated that she had become so good at noticing lies.

"Dad.""

I sighed.

I showed her.

She looked at the picture.

Her face changed.

Not fear.

Recognition.

"Lily?""

She whispered:

"That's him.""

I felt cold.

"Who?""

She looked at me.

"The man from the fire.""

I called Rebecca immediately.

Within an hour, police were involved.

The house became full of people asking questions.

But I only cared about one thing.

Lily.

She sat on the couch wrapped in a blanket.

Tara sat beside her.

Not touching.

Just close.

Waiting.

Respecting her space.

That alone told me something had changed.

The old Tara would have demanded answers.

The new Tara understood some things had to be given.

Detective Harris arrived just before sunrise.

He looked at the photo.

Then at Lily.

"Are you certain?""

Lily nodded.

"I remember his face.""

"How?""

She swallowed.

"Because he was the last person I saw before the fire started.""

The detective looked at me.

"She needs to tell us everything she remembers.""

I sat beside her.

"You don't have to do this alone.""

Lily looked at me.

Then nodded.

"I want to.""

The detective opened his notebook.

"Start from the beginning.""

Lily closed her eyes.

And for the first time in years, she told the whole story.

She told them about Daniel arguing outside the house.

About the smell.

About the strange bottle he carried.

About him seeing her.

About the warning.

She told them everything.

When she finished, nobody spoke.

Then Detective Harris asked:

"Why do you think he waited all these years?""

Lily looked at the floor.

"Because he thought nobody would believe me.""

The detective closed his notebook.

"He was right.""

Everyone looked at him.

"What?""

He sighed.

"Seven years ago, people believed the story they wanted to believe.""

He looked at Lily.

"A scared child was easier to blame than a grown man.""

Later that afternoon, they found Daniel.

He wasn't hiding.

That was the strangest part.

He was living two towns away.

Working a normal job.

Living a normal life.

Like he hadn't left a child carrying his guilt for seven years.

When the police brought him in for questioning, Tara came with us.

I wasn't sure why.

Until she spoke.

"I need to see him.""

I looked at her.

"Are you sure?""

She nodded.

"No.""

She took a breath.

"But I need to.""

Through the interview room glass, we watched Daniel sit down.

He looked older.

But not different.

Some people age.

Some people just become better at hiding.

Detective Harris placed the evidence on the table.

The photo.

The messages.

The old report.

Daniel looked at everything.

Then smiled.

Not a guilty smile.

A confident one.

"I wondered when this would happen.""

My stomach turned.

Detective Harris leaned forward.

"What does that mean?""

Daniel shrugged.

"It means the little girl finally decided to talk.""

Tara stood.

Her face went white.

The detective continued.

"You threatened Lily.""

"No.""

Daniel smiled.

"I warned her.""

I felt rage rise inside me.

But then Lily spoke.

Quietly.

From behind the glass.

"He still thinks he's protecting me.""

Everyone turned.

Lily stepped forward.

"He doesn't understand.""

The room went silent.

"What?"" I asked.

She looked at Daniel.

"He wasn't the one who started the fire.""

My heart stopped.

"What do you mean?""

Lily's face changed.

She looked terrified.

Not because of Daniel.

Because of what she was about to say.

"I remembered something else.""

She looked at Tara.

"I remembered who was with him.""

Tara froze.

"Lily?""

The girl who had spent years hiding the truth finally whispered:

"Daniel didn't act alone.""

Then she said the name that made Tara collapse into the nearest chair.

"The other person was someone from your family.""

A long silence followed.

May you like

Then Lily looked directly at Tara.

"And you've known that person your whole life.""
