Chapter 8: The Person Who Came Back

We didn't sleep that night.

None of us.

How could we?

Our entire understanding of the past had changed in a single evening.

The next morning, I drove Lily and Tara to meet Rebecca.

The car ride was quiet.

But it wasn't the same silence as before.

Before, silence meant fear.

Now it meant everyone was thinking.

Everyone was trying to understand.

Halfway there, Lily spoke.

"Dad?""

"Yeah?""

"Are you mad?""

I glanced at her through the mirror.

"At you?""

She nodded.

The question hurt.

"No.""

"Not even a little?""

"No.""

She looked out the window.

"People usually get mad when I tell the truth.""

I gripped the steering wheel.

"Then they were wrong.""

She nodded.

But I knew she was still learning how to believe that.

At the agency office, Rebecca met us in a conference room.

She placed a folder on the table.

"I need to explain something.""

We sat down.

"The original investigation was incomplete.""

"Why?"" I asked.

Rebecca looked at Tara.

"Because certain information was removed.""

Tara stiffened.

"Removed by who?""

Rebecca opened the folder.

"The original witness statement.""

She looked at Lily.

"Your statement.""

Lily went still.

"My statement?""

"Yes.""

Rebecca slid a paper across the table.

"Lily, when you were seven, you told investigators you saw someone near the house.""

Lily stared at the page.

"I remember.""

"But the official report says you were too distressed to provide details.""

Lily shook her head.

"I did provide details.""

Rebecca nodded.

"I know.""

She pointed to the document.

"Someone changed the report.""

My stomach turned.

"Who?""

Rebecca looked at the next page.

"The investigator assigned to the case.""

Tara frowned.

"Why would he do that?""

Rebecca hesitated.

"Because he was related to someone involved.""

"Who?""

Rebecca looked directly at Tara.

"Your brother-in-law.""

The room froze.

Tara whispered:

"Daniel?""

I looked at her.

"Emma's brother?""

She nodded slowly.

"No.""

But the evidence said otherwise.

The person who had terrified Lily.

The person who had warned her to stay quiet.

The person who had escaped suspicion.

Daniel.

Rebecca continued.

"Daniel had financial problems at the time. He was angry with his family.""

Tara covered her mouth.

"He killed his own sister?""

"We don't know that yet.""

Rebecca pushed another document forward.

"But we know he lied.""

I looked at the papers.

"What happened after the fire?""

"He left town.""

"Convenient.""

"Very.""

Lily sat quietly.

Too quietly.

I reached for her hand.

She hesitated.

Then took it.

That tiny movement almost broke me.

Because for years, she had been waiting for proof that someone would stay.

And now, finally, she was letting herself believe.

When we returned home, things were different.

Tara didn't go back to being normal.

She didn't pretend.

She sat with Lily.

Not as a mother trying to fix things.

As a person trying to take responsibility.

"I owe you an apology," Tara said.

Lily looked at her.

"You already said that.""

"I know.""

Tara nodded.

"But I don't think one apology is enough.""

Lily didn't answer.

"I was angry at someone who didn't deserve it.""

Tara's voice shook.

"I saw my sister's death every time I looked at you.""

Lily whispered:

"So you saw me as a reminder.""

Tara closed her eyes.

"Yes.""

The honesty hurt.

But it was better than pretending.

"I should have seen you as Lily.""

For a long time, nobody spoke.

Then Lily asked:

"Do you still want me here?""

Tara started crying.

Not dramatically.

Not loudly.

Just quietly.

Like someone finally allowing herself to feel what she had been avoiding.

"Yes.""

Lily looked down.

"Why?""

Tara answered immediately.

"Because you're my daughter.""

The words hung in the room.

Lily looked at me.

Then back at Tara.

And for the first time, she didn't look like she was waiting for someone to change their mind.

But that night, at 2:17 a.m., my phone buzzed.

Unknown number.

One message.

*You should stop digging into the past.*

I sat up.

Another message appeared.

*Some secrets are buried for a reason.*

My heart started racing.

Then the final message came through.

A photo attachment.

I opened it.

It was a picture of Lily.

Taken that same day.

Outside our house.

Someone had been watching us.

May you like

And underneath the photo were five words:

*She should have stayed silent.*
