Chapter 5: The Lie She Prepared Before We Knew the Truth

The next morning, Sarah woke to the sound of her phone vibrating against the nightstand.

It was 6:12 a.m.

She had barely slept.

Marcus was already downstairs making breakfast, and Nia was curled beneath her blankets, exhausted from the emotional upheaval of the previous evening.

Sarah reached for her phone.

Seven missed calls.

Four text messages.

All from Vanessa.

The newest message read:

You need to call me before you make a terrible mistake.

Sarah stared at it.

Another message arrived.

I hope you're prepared for what happens when people learn the truth about your daughter.

Sarah sat upright.

Her hands began to shake.

She called Marcus immediately.

"She's threatening us.""

"What happened?""

Sarah read the messages aloud.

Marcus was silent for a moment.

"Don't respond.""

"Marcus, what does she mean about Nia?""

"I don't know. But we're not going to let her frighten our daughter again.""

Sarah looked toward the bedroom door.

"She knows how to make people believe her. She'll cry, tell everyone she's been mistreated, and somehow make herself the victim.""

"Then we stick to the facts.""

He was right.

But Sarah had spent years watching Vanessa turn every disagreement into a performance. She knew how convincing her stepmother could be when she wanted sympathy.

At 6:45 a.m., someone knocked on the front door.

Marcus opened it.

Vanessa stood on the porch beside Daniel Price.

Daniel wore a dark jacket and carried a leather folder. His expression was calm, almost pleasant.

"Good morning, Marcus," he said.

"We need to talk.""

Marcus remained in the doorway.

"You have nothing to discuss with me.""

Vanessa stepped forward.

"Sarah needs to hear this, too.""

"She'll hear it when she's ready.""

Daniel lifted the folder.

"This concerns a serious family matter. It would be better if we handled it privately.""

Marcus's eyes narrowed.

"What family matter?""

Vanessa looked past him into the house.

"Let us in.""

"No.""

Her face hardened.

"You cannot keep me out of a home where my children live.""

"You don't live here anymore.""

Daniel stepped closer.

"Let's not make this ugly.""

Marcus didn't move.

"You should both leave.""

Vanessa's voice rose.

"After everything I've done for you, you're treating me like a criminal!""

Marcus gave a humorless laugh.

"You took money from our account.""

"I borrowed it!""

"Without permission.""

"I was going to repay you!""

"Then explain the missing cash.""

Vanessa opened her mouth.

Daniel interrupted.

"Perhaps we should discuss the matter with Sarah present.""

Marcus glanced over his shoulder.

Sarah had appeared in the hallway.

She was still wearing her work clothes from the previous evening, her hair pulled into a loose bun, her face pale with exhaustion.

"What do you want, Vanessa?""

Vanessa's expression immediately softened.

"Sarah, thank God. Please tell Marcus to stop treating me like some kind of thief.""

Sarah looked at Daniel's folder.

"What's that?""

"Documents," Daniel replied.

"Evidence that Vanessa has been struggling far more than she admitted.""

Sarah stared at him.

"How does that explain money missing from my account?""

Daniel opened the folder.

"Vanessa has accumulated significant debts. She was desperate, and she made some poor decisions. But she didn't act maliciously.""

Marcus folded his arms.

"She stole from an eight-year-old child.""

Daniel's expression tightened.

"That's a serious accusation.""

"It's a fact.""

Vanessa wiped her eyes.

"Sarah, I never meant to hurt Nia. I was trying to keep everyone fed. Your husband doesn't understand how hard it is to care for children when you're struggling.""

Sarah looked at her stepmother.

"You took food from Nia's plate and gave it to Ava.""

"One time.""

"Caleb says it happened repeatedly.""

Vanessa shot a furious look toward the staircase.

"That boy has been lying about me for weeks.""

Daniel closed the folder.

"Perhaps this conversation would be more productive if we focused on the real issue.""

Sarah crossed her arms.

"And what is the real issue?""

Daniel glanced at Vanessa before answering.

"Vanessa believes you owe her compensation for the expenses she covered while living here.""

For a moment, Sarah couldn't speak.

"Compensation?""

"Food, household supplies, transportation. She says she contributed significantly to the home.""

Sarah looked at Marcus.

Then she laughed once, in disbelief.

"We paid for her room, her groceries, her children's school supplies, and nearly everything else. Now she wants us to pay her?""

Vanessa lifted her chin.

"I did plenty around this house.""

"Such as?""

"I cooked.""

"You took food from our pantry.""

"I cleaned.""

"You stole money from our bedroom.""

Vanessa's face flushed.

"Stop calling it stealing!""

"Then tell me what happened to the money.""

Vanessa turned to Daniel.

He placed a hand on her shoulder.

"Sarah, I think we can resolve this without involving the authorities.""

Marcus stepped forward.

"Is that a threat?""

"No," Daniel replied evenly.

"It's a practical suggestion. Vanessa is prepared to pursue legal action if necessary.""

Sarah felt the air leave her lungs.

"Legal action for what?""

Vanessa finally spoke.

"For the emotional distress I've suffered. For being treated like an unwanted guest after sacrificing so much to help this family.""

Marcus stared at her.

"You are threatening to sue us after stealing from us?""

"I am protecting myself.""

Sarah looked at Daniel's folder.

"Show me the documents.""

Daniel hesitated.

"Excuse me?""

"If you came here with evidence, show me.""

He opened the folder again and removed several printed pages.

Sarah took them.

The first document was a handwritten list of household expenses. It included groceries, cleaning products, transportation, and several payments labeled childcare services.

Sarah frowned.

"We never hired you for childcare.""

Vanessa crossed her arms.

"You benefited from my help.""

"You're staying in our guest room for free.""

"That doesn't mean my time has no value.""

Sarah scanned the next page.

It was a typed statement claiming Vanessa had contributed thousands of dollars toward the household over the previous three months.

But the numbers were wrong.

The grocery amounts were higher than the actual receipts. Several payments had been listed twice. One entry claimed Vanessa had purchased school uniforms for Nia.

Sarah stared at it.

"Why does this say you bought Nia's school uniforms?""

Vanessa's eyes flickered.

"I helped with the children's expenses.""

"No, you didn't. I bought those uniforms myself.""

Daniel reached for the paper.

"Perhaps there has been a misunderstanding.""

Sarah pulled it away.

"These aren't misunderstandings. These are false statements.""

Vanessa's voice rose.

"You think you can humiliate me because you have money?""

Sarah placed the documents on the entryway table.

"No. I think you came here expecting me to be too ashamed to question you.""

Vanessa stepped closer.

"You've always thought you were better than me.""

Sarah held her gaze.

"I gave you a home when you said you had nowhere to go. I fed your children. I bought their school supplies.

I treated them like family. And you repaid me by making my daughter hide crackers under her bed.""

Vanessa's eyes filled with tears.

But this time, Sarah could see the anger beneath them.

"You'll wish you had never done this," Vanessa whispered.

Marcus opened the front door.

"Leave.""

Daniel gathered the papers.

"This isn't over.""

"It is in this house," Marcus replied.

Vanessa stormed outside.

Daniel followed, but before stepping off the porch, he turned toward Sarah.

"You should ask your father about the trust.""

Sarah went still.

"My father is dead.""

Daniel nodded.

"Exactly.""

Then he walked away.

Marcus shut the door.

Sarah stood motionless, replaying the words.

Ask your father about the trust.

Her father had died five years earlier, leaving behind a modest estate. Sarah had assumed everything had been settled. Vanessa had handled much of the paperwork because she had been his wife, and Sarah had trusted her to manage the final arrangements.

But there had been one thing Sarah remembered.

A conversation in the hospital, weeks before her father's death.

He had taken her hand and told her he wanted to make sure she and any children she had would always be protected.

At the time, Sarah hadn't understood what he meant.

Now she wondered whether Vanessa had understood perfectly.

Marcus touched her shoulder.

"Sarah?""

She looked up.

"Daniel said something about a trust.""

"I heard him.""

"My father left paperwork after he died. Vanessa handled it.""

Marcus's expression changed.

"Did you ever see the final documents?""

Sarah tried to remember.

There had been envelopes, signatures, meetings with an attorney. Vanessa had told her that the estate was small and that everything had been transferred according to the will.

Sarah had been grieving. She hadn't questioned it.

"No," she whispered.

"I trusted her.""

Marcus reached for his phone.

"Then we need to contact the attorney who handled your father's estate.""

Sarah nodded.

Before he could make the call, her phone vibrated again.

This time, the message came from an unknown number.

It contained a photograph of an old legal document, its edges yellowed and its signature unmistakable.

Her father's name was printed at the bottom.

Beneath it was a clause Sarah had never seen before.

She read it once.

Then again.

Her hands began to tremble.

The document appeared to establish a trust for Sarah and any children she might have, with Vanessa named as temporary trustee.

But the final paragraph was what made Sarah's blood run cold.

It stated that the trust could only be dissolved under specific circumstances—and that any attempt to conceal its assets could trigger an independent investigation.

Below the photograph was a single sentence.

Your stepmother didn't move into your house because she needed a place to stay.

A second message arrived.

She moved in because she knows the trust is about to be reviewed.

Sarah looked at Marcus.

He read the message over her shoulder, his face turning pale.

Then another text appeared.

And if you want to know why she's been stealing from you, ask her what happened to the money your father left for Nia.

Sarah felt the room tilt.

Her father had been dead for five years.

Nia had been born three years after his death.

How could there have been money left for a child who didn't yet exist?

Unless her father had known something Sarah had never been told.

May you like

Unless the trust was much larger than Vanessa had claimed.

And unless the woman who had stolen one piece of chicken from an eight-year-old girl had been hiding a secret worth far more than the money missing from their home.
