Chapter 4: The Woman Who Called Herself Family

Sarah arrived home shortly after midnight.

She had driven from the hospital with her hands gripping the steering wheel so tightly that her fingers ached. Marcus had told her what he found, but hearing it over the phone hadn't prepared her for the sight of Nia asleep with a bowl of crackers beside her bed.

Sarah sat on the edge of the mattress.

Her daughter stirred.

"Mommy?""

"I'm here, baby.""

Nia sat up and threw her arms around her mother's neck.

Sarah held her close, breathing in the scent of her shampoo.

"Did Daddy tell you everything?"" Nia whispered.

"Yes.""

"Are you mad at me?""

Sarah pulled back.

"Why would I ever be mad at you?""

"Because I didn't tell you.""

Sarah's eyes burned.

"Oh, sweetheart. You were scared. That's not your fault.""

Nia studied her face.

"Grandma said you were already tired of helping us.""

Sarah felt as though someone had struck her.

"Helping who?""

"Her and Caleb and Ava.""

Sarah swallowed hard.

"Baby, I offered them a place to stay because I wanted to help. You have never been a burden to me. Never.""

Nia nodded, but Sarah could see that she was still trying to make sense of everything.

"Can I have chicken tomorrow?""

Sarah pressed her forehead against Nia's.

"You can have chicken whenever we make it. And if you want two pieces, you can ask for two pieces.""

Nia gave a small, uncertain smile.

"Really?""

"Really.""

After tucking her back into bed, Sarah went downstairs.

Marcus was sitting at the kitchen table with his laptop open. Printed bank statements lay beside him, along with several pages of security footage timestamps.

Sarah stopped in the doorway.

"How bad is it?""

Marcus turned the laptop toward her.

"Six thousand dollars in transfers. Two thousand dollars in cash missing. Groceries disappearing for weeks.""

Sarah lowered herself into the chair opposite him.

"Who is the money going to?""

Marcus pointed at the screen.

"Daniel Price.""

Sarah recognized the name immediately.

Daniel was Vanessa's former boyfriend, the man she had claimed to leave because he was irresponsible and controlling.

Sarah stared at the transfer history.

"Why would she send him our money?""

"That's what I want to know.""

"Maybe she borrowed it.""

"Without asking us?""

Sarah shook her head.

"She wouldn't.""

Marcus didn't respond.

Sarah looked at the dates.

The first transfer had occurred shortly after Vanessa moved in. The amounts grew larger over time, as if someone had gradually become more confident that nobody would notice.

She pressed a hand to her mouth.

"She was taking money while I was helping her.""

Marcus reached across the table.

"I'm sorry.""

Sarah looked at him.

"Why are you apologizing?""

"Because I knew she could be difficult, and I didn't push harder when you invited her here.""

Sarah shook her head.

"Don't do that. I wanted to help her. I trusted her.""

"And she abused that trust.""

Sarah stared at the bank statements.

Then she noticed a transfer dated two days earlier.

The amount was $1,250.

"What was this for?""

"I don't know. The description says 'personal loan.''"

Sarah looked up.

"Did Vanessa borrow money from us before?""

"Not that I remember.""

She searched her memory.

A month earlier, Vanessa had asked whether Sarah could help cover a car repair. Sarah had given her three hundred dollars from her own account.

Two weeks later, Vanessa had asked for money to buy school supplies for Caleb and Ava.

Sarah had sent another two hundred dollars.

Neither amount had been repaid.

But Sarah had never considered them loans. She had offered the money willingly because she believed Vanessa was struggling.

Now she wondered how many times Vanessa had turned kindness into an opportunity.

Marcus closed the laptop.

"We need to confront her with the evidence.""

Sarah nodded.

"Tomorrow morning.""

"No," Marcus said.

"Tonight.""

Sarah looked toward the staircase.

"Not while the kids are awake. Caleb and Ava have already heard enough.""

Marcus considered that.

"All right. First thing in the morning.""

Sarah went to the guest room and knocked.

Vanessa opened the door wearing silk pajamas, her expression already annoyed.

"What now?""

"We need to talk.""

"I'm exhausted, Sarah.""

"So am I.""

Vanessa looked past her toward Marcus.

"Is this about that ridiculous chicken incident?""

Sarah stared at her.

"That ridiculous chicken incident was my daughter being afraid to eat in her own home.""

"Oh, please. You're acting like I starved her.""

"She has been hiding food under her bed.""

Vanessa shrugged.

"Children do strange things.""

"She said you called her greedy.""

"Because she is greedy.""

Sarah's mouth fell open.

Vanessa continued, seemingly pleased to have an audience.

"She's constantly asking for things. More food, more attention, more of everything. Ava knows how to share. Nia should learn.""

"Share what?"" Sarah demanded.

"Her dinner?""

"You're twisting my words.""

"No. I'm repeating them.""

Vanessa crossed her arms.

"You have no idea how hard it is to manage three children when you're the only adult in the house.""

"You are not the only adult in the house. Marcus and I live here.""

"You're always working.""

"Because I'm paying the bills!""

Vanessa's expression sharpened.

"Then perhaps you should be grateful I help.""

Sarah stared at her stepmother, struggling to recognize the woman standing in front of her.

"You took food from Nia.""

"One piece of chicken.""

"You took money from our bedroom.""

Vanessa went still.

Sarah noticed.

Marcus stepped into the doorway.

"We have the bank statements and the security footage.""

Vanessa's face changed.

"What security footage?""

"The footage showing you carrying groceries from our pantry to your car. And the bank records showing money transferred from our account.""

Vanessa looked from Marcus to Sarah.

Then she laughed.

It was a short, brittle sound.

"You two are unbelievable.""

"Where is the money?"" Marcus asked.

Vanessa lifted her chin.

"I borrowed it.""

"Without permission.""

"I was going to pay it back.""

"With what?""

She glared at him.

"That's none of your business.""

"It became my business when you took it.""

Vanessa turned toward Sarah.

"I thought you understood what family means.""

Sarah felt a cold calm settle over her.

"I thought you did, too.""

Vanessa's eyes filled with tears, but Sarah had seen her cry before. She had seen her weep over failed relationships, lost jobs, and broken promises. Every time, Sarah had rushed to comfort her.

This time, she didn't move.

Vanessa noticed.

"You would really humiliate me over money?""

"No," Sarah replied.

"You humiliated yourself when you made my daughter afraid to ask for dinner.""

Vanessa's face hardened.

"You've always been jealous of me.""

Sarah blinked.

"What?""

"You never liked that your father chose me.""

"My father died five years ago.""

"And you still can't accept that I was his wife.""

Sarah stared at her.

"My father loved you. I respected that. That's why I opened my home to you.""

"You opened your home because you wanted to feel superior.""

Marcus stepped forward.

"Enough.""

Vanessa ignored him.

"Sarah, if you throw me out, you'll prove exactly what I've always said about you.""

"And what is that?""

"That you only help people so you can hold it over their heads.""

Sarah felt the words land, but they no longer had the power Vanessa intended.

"I never asked you to repay my kindness with money," she said quietly.

"I asked you not to hurt my child.""

Vanessa's eyes narrowed.

"Your precious daughter isn't the only child who matters.""

"Then why have you been treating her as if she matters least?""

For a moment, Vanessa said nothing.

Then she snatched her handbag from the dresser.

"Fine. I'll leave.""

Marcus stepped aside.

"You're free to go.""

Vanessa stopped.

She had expected Sarah to beg her to stay. Perhaps she had expected Marcus to apologize.

Instead, Sarah turned toward the hallway.

"Caleb and Ava aren't leaving tonight. They have school in the morning, and they're not being punished for what you did.""

Vanessa's face twisted.

"You can't keep my children from me.""

"I'm not trying to. But they deserve to be safe.""

Vanessa stormed past them.

At the front door, she turned back.

"You'll regret this, Sarah.""

Marcus opened the door wider.

"Leave.""

Vanessa walked out and slammed it behind her.

For several seconds, the house was silent.

Then a small voice came from the staircase.

"Mom?""

Sarah turned.

Caleb stood there in his pajamas, tears running down his face.

"Is Mom really gone?""

Sarah crossed the room and knelt in front of him.

"She's gone for tonight.""

Caleb swallowed.

"Will you send us away, too?""

Sarah pulled him into a hug.

"No, sweetheart. You and Ava are safe here.""

He clung to her.

Then he whispered, "There's something else I need to tell you.""

Sarah drew back enough to see his face.

"What is it, Caleb?""

He wiped his nose with his sleeve.

"Mom didn't just take the money because she needed it.""

Marcus approached them.

"What do you mean?""

Caleb looked frightened.

"She said she was saving it for when she got caught.""

Sarah frowned.

"Saving it for what?""

Caleb's voice dropped to a whisper.

"For the lawyer.""

Marcus exchanged a look with Sarah.

May you like

Then Caleb added the words that made them both go cold.

"Mom said if you ever found out, she'd tell everyone that Nia was the reason she had to steal.""
