Chapter 8: The Lie That Started Everything
Michael stared at the photograph.
His fingers went cold.
The image showed Chloe standing beside Daniel.
But the date was written clearly.
Three years before they supposedly met.
Three years before Sarah knew her name.
Three years before Chloe entered their lives.
“This doesn’t make sense,” Michael whispered.
Daniel looked over.
“What is it?””
Michael handed him the phone.
Daniel stared.
Then his expression changed.
“No.””
Sarah stepped closer.
“What?””
Daniel looked terrified.
“She lied about everything.””
The photograph shook slightly in his hand.
Michael looked at him.
“Explain.””
Daniel sat down.
“When I met Chloe, she told me she had just moved to town.””
“And?””
“She said she didn’t know anyone.””
Michael’s voice became sharp.
“But she knew you.””
Daniel nodded slowly.
“I think so.””
Sarah looked confused.
“Why?””
Before Daniel could answer, his phone rang.
He looked at the screen.
The name made him freeze.
Chloe.
Everyone saw it.
Nobody spoke.
Daniel answered.
“Hello?””
At first, there was only silence.
Then Chloe spoke.
“You found out.””
Daniel closed his eyes.
“Yes.””
Michael stepped closer.
“Put it on speaker.””
Daniel hesitated.
Then he did.
Chloe’s voice filled the empty auditorium.
“I never wanted it to happen this way.””
Michael laughed bitterly.
“You mean you never wanted to get caught.””
Chloe ignored him.
“Daniel, you have to understand.””
“No,” Daniel said.
His voice was different.
Stronger.
“I spent eighteen years believing I abandoned my family.””
Chloe said nothing.
“You let me believe Sarah hated me.””
“I was trying to protect you.””
“From what?””
Silence.
Then Chloe whispered:
“From the truth.””
Sarah looked at Michael.
The truth.
Those two words had followed them all day.
Michael spoke.
“What truth?””
Chloe didn’t answer.
Daniel’s voice hardened.
“Tell him.””
Another silence.
Then Chloe finally said:
“Your father wasn’t supposed to leave.””
Michael froze.
Daniel looked down.
“What?””
Chloe continued.
“The plan was different.””
Sarah’s face changed.
“What plan?””
Chloe sighed.
“I was supposed to make him think Sarah betrayed him.””
Michael felt his stomach drop.
Daniel stood.
“You lied about her?””
“I showed you messages.””
“Fake messages.””
“Yes.””
The admission shocked everyone.
Daniel grabbed the phone.
“Why?””
Chloe’s voice broke.
“Because I loved you.””
“No.””
Daniel shook his head.
“That wasn’t love.””
Chloe started crying.
“I wanted a chance.””
“At what cost?””
No answer.
Michael felt anger building.
“You destroyed my family because you wanted my father?””
Chloe whispered:
“I didn’t think he would actually leave forever.””
Sarah closed her eyes.
The cruelty of it was overwhelming.
Chloe continued.
“I thought he would come back.””
Daniel laughed sadly.
“So you took my family apart because you assumed I’d rebuild it for you?””
“I was young.””
“You were thirty-two.””
Silence.
Then Chloe said something unexpected.
“I found out later that you tried to go back.””
Daniel froze.
Michael looked at him.
“What?””
Daniel’s face changed.
Chloe continued.
“You went to Sarah’s house.””
Sarah looked confused.
“When?””
Daniel whispered.
“The night I left.””
Michael stared.
“You came back?””
Daniel nodded.
“I stood outside.””
“Why didn’t you knock?””
Daniel looked broken.
“Because I saw you through the window.””
Sarah’s eyes filled.
“What did you see?””
Daniel swallowed.
“You were crying.””
She froze.
“And Michael was asleep beside you.””
Daniel looked away.
“I thought I had already destroyed enough.””
Sarah whispered:
“You should have come inside.””
“I know.””
The silence that followed felt heavier than anything before.
Then Chloe spoke again.
“But there’s one more thing you need to know.””
Everyone waited.
“I didn’t just stop the letter.””
Daniel looked at the phone.
“What else?””
Chloe hesitated.
“I changed the custody records.””
Michael’s eyes widened.
“What?””
Daniel’s face went pale.
Chloe whispered:
“I made it look like you chose not to be involved.””
Sarah stepped back.
“No.””
“Yes.””
The room went silent.
Michael looked at his father.
All these years.
All those assumptions.
Everything built on lies.
Then Chloe said:
“But I wasn’t the only one who knew.””
Michael frowned.
“What does that mean?””
Chloe answered:
“Someone helped me.””
Daniel’s face changed.
“Who?””
Chloe whispered a name.
And when Michael heard it, he felt his entire understanding of his childhood collapse.
Because the person Chloe named was someone who had comforted him for years.
May you like
Someone he trusted.
Someone who had always said they cared about his family.
