Chapter 4: The Truth Behind The Leaving

Michael stared at the photograph.

For a moment, he couldn’t breathe.

The person standing beside Daniel wasn’t Chloe.

It wasn’t a stranger.

It was someone from his own childhood.

Someone he remembered.

His father’s old business partner.

Rachel.

Michael looked at Daniel.

“What is this?””

Daniel’s face turned pale.

“Michael…”

“No.””

His voice was quieter now.

More dangerous.

“What is this?””

Chloe smiled.

“You wanted the truth, right?””

Sarah looked confused.

She had never seen the picture before.

Michael turned it over.

A date was written on the back.

A date from eighteen years ago.

The year Daniel left.

The room felt frozen.

Daniel stepped forward.

“Chloe, enough.””

“No,” Chloe replied.

“You wanted honesty.””

Michael looked between them.

“You told me you left because you needed space.””

Daniel looked away.

“I was wrong.””

“That’s not an answer.””

Daniel swallowed.

“The marriage was falling apart.””

Sarah stared at him.

“Because you were unhappy?””

Daniel didn’t answer.

Michael shook his head.

“My whole life, I thought you abandoned us because you couldn’t handle responsibility.””

He looked at the photo.

“But you left because there was someone else.””

Daniel closed his eyes.

Chloe’s smile faded.

Because the truth was becoming clear.

She had brought the weapon.

But she forgot it could cut both ways.

Sarah whispered, “How long?””

Daniel looked at her.

“I’m sorry.””

“How long?””

“Before I left.””

Sarah’s eyes filled with tears.

“All those nights I thought I wasn’t enough?””

Daniel said nothing.

“All those years I wondered what I did wrong?””

“Sarah…”

“No.””

Her voice became stronger.

“You let me blame myself.””

Michael stepped between them.

“You let Mom believe she failed.””

Daniel looked broken.

“I made mistakes.””

“Eighteen years of mistakes?””

Nobody answered.

Then Michael noticed something.

The photograph.

The date.

The details.

Something didn’t make sense.

He looked at Chloe.

“You knew about this.””

She hesitated.

Michael’s eyes sharpened.

“You knew.””

Chloe looked away.

Daniel immediately turned.

“What do you mean?””

Michael held up the picture.

“This was hidden. Mom never saw it. Dad never told me.””

He looked at Chloe.

“But you had it.””

Chloe said nothing.

Michael took a step closer.

“Why?””

The room waited.

Chloe’s expression changed.

Her anger disappeared.

Then came fear.

“I found it when I was cleaning Daniel’s old things.””

“And?””

She hesitated.

Michael’s voice dropped.

“And?””

Chloe looked at Daniel.

Then Sarah.

Then the audience.

“I found more than the picture.””

Daniel’s face went pale.

“What did you find?””

Chloe slowly reached into her bag.

She pulled out a small envelope.

Not the same kind Michael had.

An older one.

Yellowed.

Worn.

“I found this hidden behind a drawer.””

Daniel whispered.

“No.””

Michael looked at him.

“You know what’s inside?””

Daniel didn’t answer.

Sarah stepped closer.

“What is it?””

Chloe looked at Michael.

“I was going to use it to prove your mother wasn’t as perfect as everyone thinks.””

She handed him the envelope.

“But I didn’t expect you to find out about Daniel first.””

Michael opened it.

His hands shook.

Inside was a letter.

A handwritten letter.

From Daniel.

To Sarah.

Dated eighteen years ago.

Michael read the first line.

Then his entire expression changed.

Because the letter didn’t say Daniel wanted to leave.

It said something completely different.

It said Daniel was leaving because he believed he had no other choice.

And at the bottom of the letter was a signature.

May you like

Not Daniel’s.

Someone else’s.
