Chapter 8: The Friend Who Signed My Betrayal
For a few seconds, I thought I had misheard her.
Michael.
The name didn't belong in this story.
Not with Richard.
Not with Chad.
Not with anyone who had spent years trying to destroy me.
Michael was the person who sat beside my hospital bed when Brooke left.
The person who brought me coffee during physical therapy.
The person who told me, "Don't worry, Daniel. We'll rebuild everything.""
My friend.
My brother in everything except blood.
"Say that again.""
My voice was quiet.
Brooke looked at me with tears in her eyes.
"Michael was involved.""
I stared at her.
"No.""
It came out immediately.
Not because I had proof.
Because some truths are too painful to accept.
Marcus watched me carefully.
"Daniel.""
I turned toward him.
"Don't.""
His expression softened.
"I know what he means to you.""
"No, you don't.""
My voice became sharper.
"You don't understand.""
I looked back at Brooke.
"Michael was the only person who stayed.""
The sentence hurt because it was true.
When everyone disappeared, Michael remained.
When the media called me a failure, Michael defended me.
When I couldn't walk without help, Michael told me I wasn't broken.
And now she was telling me he was part of the reason I almost died.
Brooke lowered her eyes.
"I know.""
"Then why would you say this?""
"Because I found the proof.""
She held up the flash drive.
"The files are here.""
Marcus took it from her.
"Where did you find this?""
"My father kept everything.""
She swallowed.
"He thought keeping records made him untouchable.""
"Your father recorded crimes?""
Brooke nodded.
"He recorded everyone.""
A bitter smile appeared on her face.
"He trusted nobody.""
I almost laughed.
"Sounds like everyone in your family.""
The words hurt her.
I didn't care.
Not anymore.
For years, I had been careful with people's feelings.
Careful with Brooke.
Careful with Michael.
Careful with everyone.
Nobody had been careful with mine.
Marcus connected the flash drive to the laptop sitting on the apartment desk.
The screen lit up.
Hundreds of files appeared.
Dates.
Names.
Financial records.
Emails.
Contracts.
My entire life seemed to be hidden inside a small piece of plastic.
Marcus opened the first folder.
His expression changed.
"What?""
I stepped closer.
He turned the screen toward me.
A document appeared.
*Project Phoenix.*
"What is that?""
Marcus scrolled.
"It's a plan.""
"For what?""
His face hardened.
"To replace you.""
The room became silent.
The document contained details about company control.
Voting rights.
Legal strategies.
Public image management.
Everything designed to remove me from Hayes Global.
But then I saw a name.
Michael Anderson.
My stomach dropped.
Next to his name was a payment record.
Large.
Repeated.
"That's impossible.""
Brooke looked at me.
"Daniel...""
"No.""
I stepped back.
"There's an explanation.""
Marcus looked at the screen.
"The payments started two years ago.""
Two years.
Before the accident.
Before Brooke left.
Before any of this.
I felt sick.
Because betrayal hurts most when you realize it didn't happen suddenly.
It was planned.
"Why?""
Nobody answered.
I looked at Brooke.
"Why would he do this?""
She hesitated.
"Because Richard promised him something.""
"What?""
She looked at the screen.
"Control.""
I shook my head.
"Michael doesn't care about power.""
Brooke gave me a sad look.
"You don't know him as well as you thought.""
That sentence hurt more than I wanted it to.
Because it sounded exactly like something I would have said about her.
A few minutes later, Marcus opened another file.
This one was a video.
Recorded secretly.
A conference room appeared.
My heart stopped.
Michael was sitting there.
Across from him was Richard Hayes.
And Chad.
The three people who had destroyed my life were sitting together.
Michael looked calm.
Confident.
Nothing like the friend I knew.
Richard spoke first.
"You understand your role?""
Michael nodded.
"I do.""
"You maintain control of Hayes Global until Daniel is removed.""
Michael smiled.
"And then?""
Richard leaned back.
"Then you become CEO.""
The video continued.
Chad laughed.
"He'll never suspect you.""
Michael smiled.
"No.""
He looked directly into the camera.
"He trusts me more than anyone.""
I closed my eyes.
The pain was different this time.
Brooke hurt me because she abandoned me.
Chad hurt me because he hated me.
Richard hurt me because he wanted something.
But Michael...
Michael knew exactly where my heart was.
He knew exactly how to hurt me.
The video ended.
Nobody spoke.
Then Brooke whispered:
"I'm sorry.""
I looked at her.
The old instinct appeared.
The instinct to comfort her.
To tell her it wasn't her fault.
But I stopped myself.
Because I finally understood something.
Kindness without boundaries becomes permission.
"You should have told me.""
"I was scared.""
"Everyone is scared.""
My voice was calm.
"Everyone has a reason.""
Her eyes filled.
"I know.""
I turned away.
The apartment suddenly felt too small.
Too many memories.
Too many lies.
I remembered Michael sitting beside me after my surgery.
Holding my hand.
Telling me:
"Some people leave when life gets hard. I won't.""
The memory almost broke me.
Because he was right.
He didn't leave.
He stayed close enough to finish the job.
My phone suddenly vibrated.
Unknown number.
Everyone looked at it.
I answered.
"Hello?""
Michael's voice came through.
My body went cold.
"Daniel.""
Nobody moved.
Nobody breathed.
"Where are you?""
His voice was calm.
Almost normal.
Like we were old friends talking over coffee.
"Why?""
A pause.
Then:
"Because I think you found something you shouldn't have.""
I looked at the laptop screen.
The video.
His face.
His betrayal.
"How do you know?""
A small sigh.
"I know you, Daniel.""
That sentence almost made me angry enough to break the phone.
"No.""
My voice lowered.
"You don't.""
Silence.
Then Michael said:
"I'm sorry you had to find out this way.""
The words were worse than an apology.
Because they sounded sincere.
"How long?""
Another pause.
"Since before the accident.""
I closed my eyes.
There it was.
The confirmation.
"You knew.""
"Yes.""
"You knew what they were planning.""
"Yes.""
"And you did nothing.""
His voice became quieter.
"I tried to stop it.""
I laughed.
A painful sound.
"By helping them?""
"No.""
"By taking my company?""
"No.""
"By watching me wake up in a hospital bed?""
Silence.
The silence was the answer.
"Michael.""
My voice shook.
"Did you ever care about me?""
The question hung there.
For the first time, he didn't answer immediately.
And that hesitation hurt more than any lie.
Finally, he spoke.
"Yes.""
I froze.
"Then why?""
His voice changed.
The guilt appeared.
"Because my father died because of yours.""
I said nothing.
"What?""
Michael continued.
"Your grandfather destroyed my family.""
The apartment became silent.
"My father lost everything because of Hayes Global.""
I gripped the phone.
"So you blamed me?""
"No.""
His voice cracked.
"I blamed the name.""
The honesty made it worse.
"Then why did you help them?""
"Because Richard promised he would expose the truth.""
"What truth?""
Michael went silent.
Too silent.
Then:
"The truth about what your grandfather did to my father.""
I looked at Marcus.
Another connection.
Another secret.
But before I could respond, Michael spoke again.
"Daniel, listen to me.""
"No.""
"You don't understand what Richard has planned.""
"You mean the man you helped?""
"I mean the man who is about to kill everyone who knows the truth.""
My expression changed.
"What?""
"Daniel.""
His voice became urgent.
"I wasn't the final piece.""
A chill moved through me.
"What are you saying?""
"Richard never needed your company.""
The room went still.
"He needed something hidden inside it.""
"What?""
Michael whispered:
"Your grandfather's original records.""
Marcus looked at the screen.
"The ones proving everything?""
"Yes.""
Michael continued:
"And Daniel...""
His voice dropped.
"The records are not hidden at Hayes Global.""
I waited.
"Where are they?""
A long silence.
Then:
"They are hidden in the one place Richard never thought anyone would search.""
My heart raced.
"Where?""
Michael answered.
"In your mother's old house.""
The call ended.
At that exact moment, every light in the apartment went out.
And from somewhere downstairs...
we heard the sound of a car stopping.
May you like
Someone had followed us.
And they knew exactly where we were.
