Chapter 7: The Enemy Inside My Bloodline

The letter slipped from my hands.

For a moment, I couldn't hear anything.

Not the rain tapping against the apartment windows.

Not Marcus breathing beside me.

Not the distant sounds of traffic below.

Only one sentence repeated in my mind.

*The man who caused the accident that killed me was not a Whitmore.*

My fingers trembled as I picked up the paper again.

The handwriting was unmistakable.

My mother's.

I had seen it thousands of times.

On birthday cards.

On school notes.

On the small reminders she left on the kitchen counter when I was young.

Eat breakfast.

Don't forget your jacket.

I love you.

A simple handwriting.

A simple life.

And yet this letter was proof that she had carried a secret until the day she died.

"Daniel.""

Marcus's voice was careful.

Like he knew one wrong word could break something inside me.

I looked at him.

"My mother knew.""

He didn't answer.

"She knew who was responsible.""

Marcus looked down.

That was all the confirmation I needed.

"You knew too.""

His eyes lifted.

"Not everything.""

"But enough.""

He was silent.

I stepped closer.

"How many people knew the truth while I lived my life believing a lie?""

"Daniel—"

"How many?""

Marcus swallowed.

"I don't know.""

The anger came suddenly.

Not loud.

Not explosive.

Just heavy.

The kind of anger that settles deep in your bones.

I looked back at the letter.

My mother had spent years protecting me.

But from what?

And from who?

I continued reading.

The second paragraph began:

*Daniel, if you are old enough to find this letter, then you are old enough to know why I kept you away from the truth.*

I held my breath.

*Your grandfather built an empire, but he also built enemies. Some were outside our family. Some were inside it.*

My eyes moved slowly across the page.

*When Thomas discovered what his father had done, he wanted to expose everything. I supported him. I believed the truth would protect us. I was wrong.*

A painful feeling tightened in my chest.

Because I knew what came next.

*Your grandfather did not threaten us directly. He was smarter than that. He made us believe we had a choice.*

Marcus leaned closer.

"What does she mean?""

I kept reading.

*He told Thomas that if he exposed the company, Daniel would lose everything. His future. His safety. His life.*

I stopped.

My life.

The same words.

Again.

Everyone claimed they were protecting me.

But every decision had been made without me.

*Thomas wanted to fight. I wanted to fight. But we discovered someone else was moving against us. Someone within the Hayes family.*

My heartbeat quickened.

The final lines of the paragraph were darker.

*Someone who wanted the company badly enough to destroy their own family.*

I turned the page.

And there it was.

The name.

The name that had been hidden for twenty years.

*Richard Hayes.*

I stared.

Richard.

My grandfather's younger brother.

My great-uncle.

A man I barely remembered.

A man who disappeared from family events after my grandfather's death.

A man everyone described as "complicated.""

But never dangerous.

"Richard Hayes," Marcus whispered.

"You know him.""

Marcus's face tightened.

"I knew of him.""

"That's not an answer.""

He looked toward the window.

"Richard was the only person who challenged Thomas Hayes for control of the company.""

"And lost.""

"Yes.""

I folded the letter.

"So he tried to remove my father.""

Marcus nodded.

"And then he came after me.""

The realization settled.

The accident.

The inheritance.

The documents.

The lies.

Everything connected.

But one question remained.

"If Richard wanted me gone, why didn't he just take the company?""

Marcus looked at the letter.

"Because your grandfather's will had protections.""

"What protections?""

"Your grandfather may have been ruthless, but he was not careless.""

Marcus pointed to the papers.

"Your inheritance couldn't be transferred unless you were legally removed as heir.""

My expression changed.

"Removed how?""

Marcus looked at me.

"Death.""

The word hung in the apartment.

No matter how many times I heard it.

No matter how much evidence existed.

It still felt impossible.

Someone had wanted me dead because of paperwork.

Because of money.

Because of power.

Then I noticed something.

The letter wasn't finished.

There was another page.

A smaller note attached underneath.

I carefully opened it.

This time, the handwriting changed.

Thomas's.

My father's.

*Daniel,*

I stopped.

Seeing my name written by him felt strange.

*If you are reading this, then I failed again.*

My jaw tightened.

Again.

*I wanted to come home. Every day. But your mother made me promise something.*

I kept reading.

*She made me promise that if anything happened to her, I would stay away until you were old enough to understand the danger.*

I looked up.

Marcus watched me.

*She believed Richard would use me to get to you. She believed he would threaten you through me.*

My hands tightened around the paper.

*But there is something your mother never knew.*

I continued.

*Richard was not working alone.*

The room felt colder.

*Someone else inside Hayes Global helped him. Someone close enough to manipulate the company from within.*

I read the final sentence.

*Someone Daniel trusted.*

The paper slipped slightly.

Trusted.

The word was the worst part.

Because I knew exactly who that could mean.

People I loved.

People I defended.

People who stood beside me.

A sudden sound came from outside the apartment.

A footstep.

Marcus immediately turned.

"Someone is here.""

The door moved slightly.

My body reacted before my mind did.

I grabbed the closest object on the table.

Marcus positioned himself between me and the entrance.

The door slowly opened.

A figure stood in the hallway.

Female.

Holding an umbrella.

Then she stepped into the light.

Brooke.

Her face was pale.

Her eyes were red from crying.

"Daniel.""

I stared at her.

After everything.

After the lies.

After the humiliation.

After learning she knew more than she admitted.

She was the last person I expected to see.

"What are you doing here?""

She closed the door behind her.

"Because I know who helped Richard.""

Marcus immediately looked alert.

"How?""

Brooke looked at the letter in my hand.

"Because my father was one of them.""

The silence was immediate.

Her father.

Ethan Carter.

The same family connected to Chad.

The same people who had tried to destroy me.

I laughed softly.

Not because it was funny.

Because the truth had become too ridiculous.

"Another secret.""

Brooke looked hurt.

"I deserve that.""

"Do you?""

Her eyes filled.

"Yes.""

For once, she didn't argue.

She walked closer.

"I came here because I found something else.""

"What?""

She reached into her bag.

A small flash drive.

"I found this hidden in my father's office.""

Marcus took a step forward.

"What is it?""

Brooke looked at him.

"Everything.""

I stared at the device.

"What does it contain?""

Her voice dropped.

"The records of every person involved.""

My heart tightened.

"Richard.""

She nodded.

"Chad.""

Another nod.

Then she looked directly at me.

"And someone you never suspected.""

I felt a chill.

"Who?""

Brooke hesitated.

Like saying the name would change everything.

Then she whispered:

"The person who has been running Hayes Global while you were recovering.""

I froze.

Because there was only one person who fit that description.

The person everyone trusted.

The person who had access to everything.

The person who had comforted me after the accident.

My temporary replacement.

My closest adviser.

Brooke looked at me.

May you like

And said:

"Daniel... your best friend, Michael, was working with them.""
