Chapter 9: The Last Betrayal
Denise stared at the document.
“What is that?””
Marcus straightened his jacket.
“The authorization you signed.””
“I never gave you power over everything.””
“You signed it.””
“I thought it was for the property.””
Marcus shrugged.
“You should have read it.””
Richard stepped forward.
“Give me the document.””
Marcus smiled.
“Why? You're not a party to it.””
“Then explain why my name is listed in the attached financial schedule.””
Marcus's smile faded.
Laura had warned Richard that Marcus might try to use Denise's authorization to move money before the investigation was completed.
But neither of them had expected him to bring the document into the house himself.
Richard pulled out his phone.
“Laura is on her way.””
Marcus looked toward the door.
“You called your lawyer?””
“Yes.””
Marcus laughed.
“You think a lawyer can fix your marriage?””
Richard's expression didn't change.
“No. But she might be able to stop you from stealing my house.””
Marcus stepped closer.
“Your house? You haven't even paid attention to what was happening in your own home.””
Richard looked at him.
“You're right about one thing. I trusted the wrong people.””
Denise began crying.
“Marcus, please. Tell me this isn't what it looks like.””
He turned toward her.
“Denise, I did everything because I wanted us to have a future.””
“You used my savings.””
“I invested them.””
“You lied about the house.””
“I had a plan.””
“You used Richard's name.””
Marcus's patience snapped.
“Because Richard has money sitting around doing nothing!””
The room fell silent.
Marcus seemed to realize what he had admitted.
Richard looked at him.
“So that's what this was about.””
Marcus rubbed his forehead.
“Don't pretend you don't understand business.””
“I understand theft.””
Marcus pointed at him.
“You've had everything handed to you. A stable home. A family.
A daughter who calls you Dad. You never had to fight for anything.””
Richard stared at him.
“I worked for every dollar.””
“And you think that makes you special?””
“No. It makes me unwilling to let someone take it.””
Maya stood beside Denise.
“Dad, stop.””
Marcus turned.
“You stay out of this.””
Maya flinched, then straightened.
“No.””
He stared at her.
She continued.
“You told me you came back because you loved me.””
“I do.””
“Then why did you ask me to sign a loan I didn't understand?””
“For your future.””
“Why did you use Richard's money?””
Marcus didn't answer.
“Why did you tell me he didn't care about me?””
Marcus looked toward Richard.
“Because I knew he'd never let you grow up without needing him.””
Maya's eyes filled.
Richard slowly shook his head.
“You didn't need to make me look bad to become her father.””
Marcus's face hardened.
“You don't know what it's like to lose a child.””
Richard looked at him.
“No. I know what it's like to raise one.””
Laura arrived twenty minutes later with another attorney.
She examined the document on the coffee table.
Then she looked at Denise.
“Did you understand the full scope of this authorization when you signed it?””
Denise shook her head.
“No.””
“Were you represented by independent counsel?””
“No.””
“Did you receive a copy?””
Denise looked down.
“No.””
Laura exchanged a glance with her colleague.
“Mr. Harrison, I need you to understand that we are disputing the authority you're claiming under this document.””
Marcus folded his arms.
“You can't just invalidate a signed agreement.””
“No one is attempting to do that without due process,” Laura replied.
“But we have evidence of misrepresentation, disputed financial transfers, and an ongoing investigation into forged signatures.””
Marcus looked at Richard.
“You've been preparing this.””
Richard shook his head.
“No. You've been preparing it for months. I've only just discovered it.””
Laura placed a notice on the table.
“This is a formal demand that no further assets be transferred pending review.””
Marcus laughed.
“You can't stop the sale.””
Laura looked at him.
“Actually, we've already contacted the buyer's legal representative.””
Marcus's expression changed.
“What?””
“The sale is being challenged because the property may have been purchased using disputed funds and encumbered by unauthorized financial arrangements.””
Marcus reached for the document.
Laura moved it away.
“Don't touch that.””
For several seconds, Marcus stood motionless.
Then he looked at Denise.
“You're going to regret this.””
Denise began trembling.
Richard stepped between them.
“Leave her alone.””
Marcus looked at Richard.
“You think you've won?””
“No.””
Richard's voice was quiet.
“I think the truth is finally catching up with you.””
The following morning, Marcus received a call from the private lender.
Richard wasn't present, but Denise later told him what happened.
The lender had frozen further advances.
The property sale was suspended.
The company accounts were under review.
Marcus had been asked to provide documentation supporting the original deposits.
He couldn't.
By noon, Vanessa Cole had contacted Laura's office.
She wanted to know whether the same financial investigation included the thirty thousand dollars she had transferred to Marcus.
It did.
And when she arrived at the attorney's office, she brought something more valuable than the bank statements.
A collection of emails.
Marcus had been sending her messages for over a year.
In them, he described a plan to use the Hayes family's assets to clear his debts.
One message contained a line that made Denise physically sick when Laura read it aloud.
Richard is the easiest part. He's emotionally attached to Maya and will keep paying as long as he believes he's protecting her.
Denise covered her mouth.
Richard looked down.
He had known Marcus was dishonest.
But seeing those words made everything feel different.
His love for Maya had been treated as a financial weakness.
Vanessa sat quietly across from them.
“I didn't know what he was doing,” she said.
Richard nodded.
“I believe you.””
She wiped her eyes.
“I thought he was building a home for Ethan.””
Ethan sat beside her.
“He told me the same thing.””
Maya looked at him.
“I'm sorry.””
Ethan shrugged.
“We were both lied to.””
Maya lowered her head.
Then she turned toward Vanessa.
“Did you know about me?””
Vanessa hesitated.
“Yes.””
Maya swallowed.
“Did Marcus tell you he had another daughter?””
“Yes.””
“What did he say?””
Vanessa looked uncomfortable.
“He said you lived with your mother and stepfather. He said he had no relationship with you.””
Maya stared at Richard.
The truth was becoming unbearable.
Marcus hadn't simply returned after years of absence.
He had carefully presented a different version of himself to every person he wanted to use.
To Maya, he was the father who had been kept away.
To Denise, he was the man offering a second chance.
To Vanessa, he was the devoted father building a home.
To Ethan, he was the businessman who would provide a secure future.
And to Richard, he had been a man who wanted to reconnect with his daughter.
He had told each person exactly what they wanted to hear.
Until their stories collided.
Three weeks later, the legal investigation reached another stage.
Marcus was formally questioned about the disputed signatures and financial transactions.
His attorney advised him not to contact Richard or Denise.
The house sale remained suspended.
The lender withdrew its offer.
And Harrison Family Holdings was placed under financial review.
Richard returned to work.
He didn't announce anything.
He didn't post about what had happened.
He simply went back to his ordinary routine.
One evening, he was repairing a loose cabinet hinge when Maya entered the kitchen.
“Can we talk?””
He tightened the screw.
“Sure.””
She stood beside the counter.
“I got a letter from the college.””
Richard looked up.
“What did they say?””
“My scholarship is still active.””
“That's good.””
“And they gave me a financial aid review because of what happened with the education account.””
Richard nodded.
Maya looked down.
“I don't expect you to pay for everything.””
He put down the screwdriver.
“That's good.””
“I want to work part-time. Maybe at the library or somewhere on campus.””
Richard studied her.
“You can do that.””
She nodded.
Then she pulled a folded piece of paper from her pocket.
“I wrote something.””
Richard accepted it.
It was a letter.
The first line read:
Dear Dad,
His throat tightened.
Maya continued.
“I know I don't have the right to ask you to forgive me. But I want you to know that I remember everything now.””
Richard looked at her.
“You don't need to remember everything to apologize.””
“I know.””
She wiped her eyes.
“I just want you to know I was wrong.””
Richard folded the letter carefully.
“Thank you.””
Maya waited.
Then she asked:
“Can I call you Dad again?””
Richard looked at her for a long moment.
“You never needed my permission.””
She began crying.
He opened his arms.
For a second, she hesitated.
Then she stepped forward and hugged him.
Richard held her gently.
Not tightly.
Not as if he were afraid she would disappear.
He had learned something during those terrible weeks.
Love could be offered.
Trust had to be rebuilt.
And forgiveness couldn't be demanded.
Later that night, Richard received a call from Laura.
“Mr. Hayes, we found another document.””
He sat upright.
“What document?””
“A letter Marcus sent to the lender before the property purchase.””
Richard felt his stomach tighten.
“What does it say?””
Laura paused.
“It's a proposed settlement agreement.””
“Between whom?””
“You and Marcus.””
Richard frowned.
“I never agreed to settle anything.””
“I know. That's why it's important.””
She sent him a copy.
Richard opened the attachment.
The agreement described a payment arrangement in which Marcus would receive a portion of the proceeds from Richard's life insurance policy.
Richard stared at the screen.
Then he noticed the date.
It was signed six months earlier.
The same month Marcus had supposedly begun reconnecting with Maya.
But the most disturbing detail wasn't the date.
It was the final paragraph.
Upon Richard Hayes's voluntary withdrawal from the family residence, all associated property and financial claims shall be transferred to the designated beneficiaries.
Richard read it again.
Then he noticed the beneficiary names.
Denise Hayes.
Maya Hayes.
And a third name.
*Ethan Harrison.*
Richard lowered the phone.
There was something he hadn't understood.
Marcus hadn't just planned to take his money.
May you like
He had planned to make it appear that Richard had willingly surrendered everything.
And now Laura was about to explain how far that plan had gone.
