Chapter 3: The Money Nobody Mentioned

Richard didn't move.

He stood in the kitchen with the transfer confirmation in his hand, listening to Maya's voice through the ceiling.

“Dad, I told you. He hasn't seen anything.””

A pause.

Then Maya laughed.

“Of course. Mom handled it.””

Richard looked at Denise.

She was staring at the floor.

“Denise,” he said quietly.

“What other account?””

She rubbed her forehead.

“Let me explain.””

“Start with the twelve thousand dollars.””

“It wasn't what you think.””

“Then tell me what it was.””

Denise pulled out a chair and sat down.

Richard remained standing.

“I transferred some money to Marcus,” she admitted.

“How much?””

“Twelve thousand.””

“Why?””

“He needed help.””

Richard stared at her.

“With what?””

“His business.””

Richard gave a short, disbelieving laugh.

“So my wife gave money to the man who humiliated me at our daughter's graduation?””

“Don't make it sound like that.””

“How should I make it sound?””

Denise looked up.

“Marcus said he had an opportunity. He wanted to invest in a property development company. He promised to pay me back.””

Richard placed the paper on the table.

“Where did the money come from?””

Denise didn't answer.

“Denise.””

She swallowed.

“From the education savings account.””

Richard felt his stomach tighten.

He knew that account.

It was the account he had opened when Maya was four.

Every birthday, every Christmas, and every year-end bonus, he had deposited money into it.

He had made sure Maya would never have to choose between textbooks and groceries.

“How much was in the account?””

Denise looked away.

“Richard, I was going to replace it.””

“How much?””

“Forty-six thousand.””

Richard gripped the back of the chair.

“And you transferred twelve thousand to Marcus?””

“Yes.””

“When?””

“Last week.””

He closed his eyes.

For several seconds, the only sound in the kitchen was the refrigerator humming.

“Why didn't you ask me?””

Denise's voice became defensive.

“Because I knew you'd say no.””

“Exactly.””

“Marcus said he had a way to make the money grow.””

Richard shook his head.

“Did you even ask to see his business records?””

“He's Maya's father.””

“That wasn't my question.””

Denise looked down.

Richard walked to the window.

Outside, a neighbor was watering the lawn. A child rode a bicycle down the sidewalk.

Everything looked painfully ordinary.

He turned back.

“Did you give him permission to use the money?””

Denise nodded.

“And what did he promise?””

“That Maya would benefit.””

Richard stared at her.

“How?””

“He said he wanted to help with college.””

“Then why did Maya say there's another account?””

Denise's eyes widened.

“I don't know.””

Richard picked up his phone.

He called Maya.

She answered after four rings.

“What?””

“Come downstairs.””

“I'm busy.””

“Now, Maya.””

She sighed loudly.

“Fine.””

Five minutes later, Maya entered the kitchen.

She was still wearing the new handbag over her shoulder.

“What?””

Richard held up the bank transfer confirmation.

“What's the other account?””

Maya froze.

Then she looked at Denise.

“Mom?””

Richard noticed the glance.

He also noticed the way Maya's fingers tightened around her handbag strap.

“I'm asking you.””

Maya shrugged.

“It's nothing.””

“Then you won't mind explaining.””

She sighed.

“Dad opened an account for me.””

Richard blinked.

“Marcus?””

“Yes.””

“How much money is in it?””

“I don't know.””

“Who deposits money into it?””

“Dad.””

Richard looked at Denise.

“Did you know about this?””

Denise nodded reluctantly.

Richard felt a strange pressure behind his ribs.

For eighteen years, he had saved money for Maya.

He had sacrificed holidays, postponed buying a new car, and worked overtime during Christmas seasons.

Now he was discovering that his wife and daughter had been discussing money with Marcus behind his back.

“Where did Marcus get the money to open an account?”” he asked.

Maya frowned.

“Why does that matter?””

“Because you just told me he opened it.””

“Maybe he saved.””

Richard nodded.

“Maybe.””

He turned to Denise.

“Did you transfer money into that account?””

“No.””

“Did you give Marcus access to the education fund?””

Denise hesitated.

Maya interrupted.

“Why are you interrogating Mom?””

Richard looked at her.

“Because this money was saved for your education.””

“I didn't ask you to save it.””

The words landed harder than she expected.

Even Maya seemed to realize it.

But she didn't apologize.

Instead, she crossed her arms.

“You always make me feel like I owe you something.””

Richard stared at her.

“You don't owe me anything for being loved.””

“Then stop bringing up everything you've done.””

He looked at her for a long moment.

“That's fair.””

Maya blinked.

Richard continued.

“I won't bring it up again.””

He turned toward the kitchen counter and picked up the transfer confirmation.

“But I will find out where the money went.””

Maya's expression hardened.

“You can't control Dad's money.””

“No. But I can control what happens to mine.””

He looked directly at Denise.

“And I can find out what happened to the account I created.””

That afternoon, Richard drove to the bank.

He had been with the same institution for twenty years.

The branch manager, a woman named Patricia, recognized him immediately.

“Richard! It's been a while.””

“Hello, Patricia. I need to review an education savings account.””

“Of course.””

She led him into a small office.

Richard provided his identification and account details.

Patricia typed for several minutes.

Then her expression changed.

“Mr. Hayes, I need to ask you something.””

“What?””

“Did you authorize a change to the account ownership?””

Richard frowned.

“What change?””

Patricia turned her monitor slightly.

“The account was originally established with you as the primary owner and Maya as the designated beneficiary.””

“Yes.””

“Three weeks ago, a request was submitted to transfer administrative control.””

Richard stared at the screen.

“By whom?””

Patricia looked uncomfortable.

“The paperwork lists your wife, Denise Hayes, as the requesting party.””

Richard leaned forward.

“I never signed anything.””

Patricia nodded.

“That's what I was checking. There's a signature here that doesn't match the original documents.””

She printed a copy.

Richard looked at the signature.

It was his name.

But he had never written it.

His hands went cold.

“Was the request approved?””

“Partially. The transfer was flagged for verification.””

“Who requested it?””

Patricia checked the file.

“The receiving party is listed as Harrison Family Holdings.””

Richard looked at the paper.

The same company name he had seen on the shopping bag.

“Who owns that company?””

Patricia clicked another screen.

“I can give you the public business information, but I can't advise you on the legal implications.””

She printed another document.

Richard looked at the registered owner.

*Marcus Harrison.*

He sat back.

For a moment, the room seemed to lose all sound.

Patricia leaned forward.

“Mr. Hayes, is everything all right?””

Richard looked at her.

“No.””

He gathered the documents.

“Can you freeze the account until this is investigated?””

“We can place a temporary hold on disputed transactions. You'll need to complete the fraud review.””

“Do it.””

Patricia nodded.

Then she hesitated.

“One more thing.””

Richard looked up.

“The transfer request included an additional document.””

“What document?””

“A statement indicating that the beneficiary had agreed to the change.””

Richard frowned.

“Maya?””

Patricia nodded.

“She was listed as having consented.””

Richard stared at the paper.

Maya had known.

Not just about the money.

She had apparently signed something.

He left the bank with a folder full of documents and a feeling he couldn't quite name.

At home, he found Denise sitting at the dining table.

She looked up when he entered.

“Where have you been?””

“The bank.””

Her face changed.

“What did you find?””

Richard placed the documents in front of her.

“Did you forge my signature?””

Denise stood abruptly.

“What?””

“This signature. Is it yours?””

She stared at the paper.

Then she shook her head.

“I didn't forge anything.””

“Then who did?””

“I don't know.””

Richard studied her face.

“Did Marcus ask you to submit this?””

Denise didn't answer.

Richard pulled out a chair.

“Denise, I need the truth.””

She sat down slowly.

“Marcus said the account would be easier to manage if it was transferred to his company.””

“Why?””

“He said he wanted to protect Maya's money.””

Richard laughed without humor.

“By putting it under his business?””

“He told me it was temporary.””

“And Maya signed?””

Denise closed her eyes.

“Yes.””

Richard felt his chest tighten.

“Why?””

“She said she wanted Marcus to handle her college expenses.””

He looked at the staircase.

“Did she know the account belonged to me?””

Denise whispered.

“Yes.””

Silence filled the room.

Then Richard asked the question that had been haunting him since the graduation ceremony.

“Why are you doing this to me?””

Denise's eyes filled with tears.

“I thought you would understand.””

“Understand what?””

She looked up.

“Marcus said he wanted to make up for lost time. He said Maya needed something from him that you couldn't give her.””

Richard's voice dropped.

“What?””

Denise swallowed.

“A future with her biological family.””

Richard stared at her.

Then he noticed a second sheet of paper beneath the bank documents.

It was a business registration form.

The date was six months earlier.

And beneath Marcus's name was another name.

*Denise Hayes. Co-director.*

Richard slowly lifted the document.

“You're in business with him?””

Denise's face crumpled.

Before she could answer, the front door opened.

Maya walked in.

She looked at the papers on the table.

Then at Richard.

“Oh, you found out.””

Richard turned toward her.

Maya placed her handbag down.

“Look, I was going to tell you eventually.””

Richard stared at her.

“Tell me what?””

She took a breath.

“Dad and Mom are planning to move me into his new house.””

Richard's eyes narrowed.

“What new house?””

Maya looked at Denise.

May you like

Then she delivered the words that changed the entire argument.

“The house you think is yours.””
