Chapter 8: The Family That Was Built On Lies

I spent the entire night staring at the police report.

Vanessa’s father.

The detective.

The man who had helped everyone believe Claire simply left.

The same man who had told me, years ago, “Sometimes people disappear because they don’t want to be found.””

I remembered those words.

I remembered trusting him.

I remembered thanking him.

My entire body felt sick.

The next morning, I placed the report on the kitchen table.

Vanessa walked in.

She stopped immediately.

She knew.

“You found it.””

I looked at her.

“How long?””

She said nothing.

“How long have you known where Claire was?””

Her face changed.

Not guilt.

Fear.

“Marcus—”

“No.””

I stood.

“I want the truth.””

She looked toward the stairs.

“Maya is upstairs.””

“She deserves the truth.””

Vanessa shook her head.

“No.””

That single word made me angry.

“No?””

“You don’t understand what will happen.””

“What will happen is my daughter will finally stop thinking her mother abandoned her.””

Vanessa’s eyes filled.

“I was trying to protect her.””

“You keep saying that.””

“Because it’s true.””

“No.””

I pointed at the report.

“This is not protection.””

She sat down.

Her shoulders dropped.

“I was young.””

I almost laughed.

“You were an adult.””

“I was afraid.””

“Of what?””

She looked at me.

“Of losing you.””

The honesty was disturbing.

“You destroyed another woman’s life because you wanted mine?””

“I loved you.””

“No.””

I shook my head.

“You wanted me.””

She started crying.

“I loved you.””

“Love doesn’t erase people.””

Silence.

Then she whispered:

“I didn’t hurt Claire.””

I stared.

“Then tell me what happened.””

Vanessa looked away.

“She came to my house.””

“When?””

“The night she disappeared.””

My heart raced.

“Why?””

“She wanted to talk.””

“About what?””

“About Ethan. About Maya.””

“And?””

Vanessa swallowed.

“She said she was going to tell you everything.””

“What did you do?””

Her silence answered before she did.

“I begged her not to.””

I waited.

“And?””

“She left.””

“Alive?””

“Yes.””

“Then what happened?””

Vanessa covered her face.

“I don’t know.””

I stared.

“You don’t know?””

“She drove away.””

I looked at the report.

“You were the last person who saw her.””

“Yes.””

“Your father closed the case.””

She looked up.

“He was protecting me.””

The words came out before she realized what she had admitted.

The room went silent.

Vanessa froze.

I stared at her.

“You just admitted it.””

Her face went pale.

“I didn’t mean—”

“You admitted your father covered for you.””

She started crying harder.

“I was scared.””

“Everyone was scared.””

My voice broke.

“But Maya was the one who paid the price.””

That afternoon, I took Maya to visit Claire’s old apartment.

Ethan had found the address.

He said Claire kept journals there.

Things she wanted Maya to have someday.

The apartment was empty.

Dust covered everything.

But inside a drawer, we found a box.

Maya opened it.

Inside were drawings.

Birthday cards.

Letters.

All addressed to her.

She picked up one.

The date was eleven years ago.

“I thought she forgot me.””

My heart broke.

I hugged her.

“She never forgot you.””

Maya opened another letter.

Then another.

Each one had the same message.

I love you.

I’m coming back.

Please remember that.

Maya cried silently.

Then Ethan found something at the bottom.

A small voice recorder.

Claire’s name was written on it.

We played it.

Static filled the room.

Then Claire’s voice.

Older.

Tired.

But alive.

“Marcus, if you’re hearing this, something went wrong.””

I stopped breathing.

Claire continued.

“I need you to know I never left because I stopped loving you or Maya.””

Maya covered her mouth.

“I found out Vanessa had been lying.””

A pause.

“I know she loves you, but she is not safe for Maya.””

My hands shook.

Then Claire said something that changed everything.

“Vanessa didn’t just hide Maya’s father.””

Silence.

“She hid something else.””

I leaned closer.

Claire’s voice became weaker.

“She knows what happened to my family.””

The recording ended.

Nobody moved.

Then Ethan’s phone rang.

He answered.

His face changed.

“What?””

He listened.

Then looked at me.

“Marcus.””

“What?””

His voice was quiet.

“They found Claire.””

My heart stopped.

“Where?””

He looked terrified.

“Alive.””

For eleven years, we thought Claire was gone.

May you like

But she wasn’t.

And the person who had hidden her secret was about to lose everything.
