Chapter 7: The Man Who Knew The Truth

I met Ethan at a small coffee shop twenty minutes outside town.

I almost didn’t go.

Every instinct told me not to trust him.

After all, this was the man connected to the biggest secret of my life.

But I needed answers.

Not Vanessa’s answers.

Not assumptions.

The truth.

Ethan was sitting in the corner when I arrived.

He looked older.

Tired.

His hair had more gray than I remembered.

But his eyes were the same.

The eyes of someone carrying guilt.

He stood.

“Marcus.””

I didn’t shake his hand.

“Tell me why you’re here.””

He nodded.

“I deserve that.””

I sat across from him.

“Start talking.””

He looked down.

“Maya’s mother, Claire, found out she was pregnant.””

I said nothing.

“She was scared.””

“She had me.””

“Yes.””

“Then why was she looking for you?””

His face tightened.

“Because I was the father.””

The words hurt.

Even though I already knew.

Ethan continued.

“But I didn’t know until years later.””

I frowned.

“What?””

“Claire never told me.””

“Why?””

“Because Vanessa threatened her.””

My hands tightened.

“What kind of threat?””

Ethan looked at me.

“She told Claire that if she told anyone the truth, she would destroy her life.””

I stared.

“Why?””

“Because Vanessa was obsessed with you.””

The words made me uncomfortable.

“Obsessed?””

Ethan nodded.

“She wanted your life.””

I remembered.

The way Vanessa entered my world after Claire disappeared.

The way she immediately wanted to help with Maya.

The way she became indispensable.

“She knew Claire was leaving?””

“She knew Claire was planning to tell you everything.””

“And?””

Ethan looked away.

“And Vanessa stopped her.””

The room felt colder.

“How?””

Ethan took a deep breath.

“Claire called me the night she disappeared.””

I froze.

“You talked to her?””

“Yes.””

“Why didn’t you tell me?””

“Because I was afraid.””

“Of Vanessa?””

“Yes.””

I leaned forward.

“You had eleven years to tell me.””

“I know.””

His voice cracked.

“I regret it every day.””

I wanted to hate him.

But his pain looked real.

“What happened that night?””

Ethan looked out the window.

“Claire was coming to your house.””

My heart stopped.

“She wanted to tell you Maya wasn’t biologically yours.””

I swallowed.

“She wanted to tell me?””

“Yes.””

“What happened?””

“She never arrived.””

Silence.

I stared at him.

“What do you mean?””

“I found her car.””

“Where?””

“Near the highway.””

My stomach dropped.

“What happened to her?””

Ethan looked at me.

“That’s the part nobody told you.””

I waited.

“She survived.””

The world stopped.

“What?””

“She survived the accident.””

My voice became a whisper.

“Claire was alive?””

“Yes.””

“Then where is she?””

Ethan looked down.

“She disappeared.””

I couldn’t speak.

My entire understanding of the past shattered.

For eleven years, I believed Maya’s mother walked away.

But she hadn’t.

She had vanished.

“Who knows this?””

Ethan hesitated.

“Vanessa.””

I stood so quickly the chair moved.

“No.””

“She knew.””

“How?””

“Because she was there.””

I stared at him.

“What?””

Ethan’s face became serious.

“Marcus, Claire wasn’t running away from you.””

He leaned closer.

“She was running from Vanessa.””

I drove home faster than I should have.

My mind was racing.

Every memory.

Every conversation.

Every excuse.

Vanessa had always been there.

She was there when Claire disappeared.

She was there when Maya cried for her mother.

She was there when I needed someone.

And I thought she was saving me.

But maybe…

Maybe she was replacing someone.

When I arrived home, Maya was sitting at the kitchen table.

She looked up.

“Dad?””

I walked over and hugged her.

Hard.

“What happened?””

I shook my head.

“Nothing.””

But it wasn’t true.

Everything had happened.

Maya pulled away.

“You found out something.””

I looked at my daughter.

The child everyone underestimated.

The child everyone tried to silence.

“Yes.””

“What?””

I sat beside her.

“Your mother didn’t abandon you.””

Her eyes widened.

“What?””

“She was trying to come back.””

Maya covered her mouth.

“Then why didn’t she?””

I didn’t answer.

Because I didn’t know how to tell my daughter that an adult she trusted might have stolen her mother from her.

That night, I searched through old documents again.

This time, I found something hidden behind the custody papers.

A police report.

Filed eleven years ago.

Never followed up.

The name on the report was Claire.

And the final note from the officer said:

Witness claims Vanessa Hart was last person seen with victim before disappearance.

My hands went cold.

Because beneath that sentence was another line.

A line that explained why nobody ever investigated.

The report had been closed by someone inside the department.

Someone who signed:

May you like

*Detective Richard Hart.*

Vanessa’s father.
