Chapter 8: The Money Meant for Maya
The next morning, I sat across from Denise at the dining table, watching her stir sugar into a cup of coffee she hadn't touched.
I had not planned to confront her.
Evelyn had advised me to let the legal process establish the facts before making accusations. But Denise had sent me eleven messages overnight, each one demanding that we settle the family agreement before the situation became more complicated.
At 8:03 a.m., she sent another.
We cannot let this continue. Think about Tyler and Brandon.
At 8:11, she wrote:
If you still love me, you'll come home and talk like a husband instead of treating me like a criminal.
At 8:19, she sent a photograph of our wedding rings resting on the kitchen counter.
Ten years, Daniel. Are you really going to throw them away?
I had agreed to meet her only to discuss practical arrangements.
Evelyn had asked me to keep the conversation calm and avoid signing anything.
Denise looked at me expectantly.
“Are you ready to listen?””
“I am.””
“Good. Because I've spent the entire night thinking about what happened.””
She placed her coffee down.
“I know I went too far with the photograph. I was angry, and I shouldn't have cut it.””
I waited.
She looked at me.
“Are you going to say something?””
“Keep going.””
Denise's jaw tightened.
“I also shouldn't have told Maya that you wanted her to leave. I was trying to prepare her for adulthood.””
“That isn't what you told her.””
“I understand that now.””
I studied her face.
For the first time in days, she seemed willing to acknowledge that she had done something wrong.
Then she reached into her bag and removed the family settlement.
“But we still need to discuss the finances. Tyler and Brandon need security, and I need to know that I'm not going to spend the rest of my life fighting over money.””
I looked at the document.
“I'm not signing this.””
Her expression fell.
“Daniel, please.””
“I won't sign a settlement that restricts Maya's education fund or transfers control of my mother's property.””
“That's not what this is about.””
“Then remove those clauses.””
She hesitated.
“Those provisions are necessary.””
“Why?””
“Because we need to protect the future.””
“Whose future?””
She pushed the document toward me.
“Everyone's.””
I shook my head.
“No.””
Her eyes filled with tears.
“I've spent ten years trying to build a family with you.””
“And I've spent ten years believing we were building one together.””
She looked away.
Then I asked the question I had come to ask.
“Did you contact Claire's solicitor about Maya's education fund?””
Denise went completely still.
The spoon slipped from her fingers and struck the saucer.
“What?””
“The solicitor has records of an email sent from your account requesting changes to Maya's fund.””
She stared at me.
“That was a misunderstanding.””
“What misunderstanding?””
“I was trying to understand how the fund worked.””
“You submitted a form requesting a change of beneficiary.””
“I never intended to take Maya's money.””
“Then why did you ask to change the beneficiary?””
Denise stood and walked toward the window.
“Because I was worried about what would happen to Tyler and Brandon if something happened to you.””
“The fund belongs to Maya.””
“I know that.””
“Then why did you try to redirect it?””
She turned.
“Because I was scared!””
Her voice cracked.
“I was scared that you would die, that Maya would inherit everything, and that my sons would have nothing. I was scared that I would spend the rest of my life depending on a man who had already decided that his daughter mattered more than anyone else.””
I stared at her.
“You could have discussed those fears with me.””
“You would have said no.””
“Then you should have accepted my answer.””
She wiped her cheeks.
“You don't understand what it's like to be a mother who has to fight for her children.””
“I understand what it's like to be a father who has to protect his.””
Denise sat down again.
For several seconds, she said nothing.
Then she opened her bag and removed another document.
“This is the original request.””
She slid it toward me.
The form was dated eleven months earlier.
It requested that Maya's education fund be transferred into a family trust, with Tyler and Brandon listed as equal beneficiaries alongside Maya.
My name appeared at the bottom.
The signature looked like mine.
I felt my stomach tighten.
“Did you sign this?””
Denise shook her head.
“No.””
“Then who did?””
“I don't know.””
“Denise.””
She looked up.
“I swear I didn't sign your name.””
I believed she was telling the truth about one thing.
She had not personally written the signature.
But that did not mean she hadn't arranged for someone else to do it.
I took out my phone and photographed the document.
“Evelyn will need this.””
Denise snatched the paper back.
“No.””
I stared at her.
“Why not?””
“Because you're going to use it against me.””
“If the document is legitimate, it will help establish what happened.””
She clutched it against her chest.
“You don't care about the truth. You just want something to prove that I'm a terrible person.””
I stood.
“I want to know what happened to the money that was meant for Maya.””
Denise's expression changed.
For the first time, she looked genuinely frightened.
“Daniel, please. There are things you don't understand.””
“Then explain them.””
She looked toward the hallway.
“Not here.””
“Where?””
“Somewhere private.””
“We are alone.””
She shook her head.
“I need to speak to Rebecca first.””
I felt a cold sensation move through my chest.
“Why?””
“Because she knows more about the paperwork than I do.””
I took a slow breath.
“Then you should tell Evelyn everything you know.””
Denise stood abruptly.
“I can't.””
“Why not?””
“Because if I tell her, it will ruin everything.””
I stared at her.
“What will it ruin?””
She didn't answer.
Instead, she grabbed her bag and hurried toward the door.
“Denise.””
She stopped.
“I'm giving you one chance to explain what happened. Not because I want to punish you. Because I want to understand whether there is anything left to save.””
She turned toward me.
For a moment, her expression softened.
Then she said, “If I tell you the truth, you'll never look at me the same way again.””
She walked out.
I stood alone in the kitchen.
I had the terrible feeling that she had just admitted more than she intended.
At noon, Evelyn called with an update.
The original solicitor had confirmed that the education fund remained legally protected. No beneficiary change had been processed, and no money had been transferred out of the fund.
I felt relief wash over me.
“So Maya's money is safe?””
“Based on the records we've reviewed, the fund remains intact. We're obtaining written confirmation of the balance and the restrictions governing withdrawals.””
“Thank God.””
“There's another development. The disputed request was submitted from an email account associated with Denise, but the attachment's document properties identify a different author.””
“Who?””
“Rebecca Lawson.””
I closed my eyes.
Denise's sister.
The same woman whose company had received payments from our joint account.
“Could Rebecca have prepared the form?””
“Possibly. The metadata is not conclusive by itself, but it gives us another lead. We'll need the original electronic file and any relevant correspondence.””
“What happens now?””
“We continue tracing the funds, verify the loan application, and notify the relevant parties that the disputed documents are not authorized. If the evidence supports it, the matter may need to be referred to the appropriate authorities.””
I thanked her.
After the call, I drove to my mother's house to tell Maya that her education fund appeared to be safe.
She was sitting on the back porch with a sketchbook on her lap.
When she saw me, she closed it.
“Is something wrong?””
“No. Actually, I have good news.””
I sat beside her.
“Your mother made arrangements for your education before she died. The fund she established is still there, and we're making sure nobody can change it without proper authorization.””
Maya stared at me.
“How much is in it?””
“We're confirming the exact amount. But it's enough to help with college.””
She looked down at her hands.
“Mom really did that?””
“Yes.””
For a moment, she smiled.
Then the smile faded.
“Does Denise know?””
“Yes.””
Maya nodded slowly.
“That's why she wants me to leave.””
I hesitated.
“It may be part of the reason.””
She turned toward me.
“Dad, I think Denise hates that Mom left me something she can't control.””
I didn't know what to say.
Maya looked back at her sketchbook.
“Do you remember when I was little and Denise used to help me with my hair?””
“I do.””
“She'd braid it before school. Sometimes she'd make pancakes on Saturdays. I thought she really liked being my stepmom.””
Her voice trembled.
“I used to tell Mom about her. I told her I thought Denise was nice.””
I felt my throat tighten.
“I'm sorry, sweetheart.””
Maya shook her head.
“I don't want you to be sorry. I just don't understand how someone can be nice to you for years and then suddenly decide you're not family.””
I thought about Denise's words in the kitchen.
If I tell you the truth, you'll never look at me the same way again.
Perhaps she had never suddenly changed.
Perhaps the resentment had been there all along, hidden beneath the gestures I had mistaken for unconditional love.
But I didn't want to place that burden on Maya.
“You don't have to understand her choices,” I said.
“You only have to remember that they don't define your worth.””
She leaned against me.
We sat together until the sun began to set.
Then my phone rang.
Rebecca.
I almost let it go to voicemail.
Instead, I answered.
“Daniel,” she said, her voice shaking, “I need to talk to you.””
“About what?””
“Denise.””
“What about her?””
“She's coming to my house tonight. She wants me to destroy the original files.””
I stood up.
“Which files?””
“The financial records. The documents about Maya's education fund. The property paperwork. Everything.””
I felt my pulse accelerate.
“Why are you telling me this?””
“Because I helped her prepare some of the documents.””
I closed my eyes.
“Rebecca, did you know my signature was being copied?””
She began to cry.
“I knew the paperwork wasn't right. I told myself it was temporary. Denise said you would agree eventually.””
“That isn't an answer.””
“I know.””
“Did you prepare the altered will?””
“No. I didn't create that document.””
“Then who did?””
She hesitated.
“I don't know who added the paragraph about Tyler. But I know where the original electronic files are stored.””
“Where?””
“In a cloud account Denise uses for her business.””
“Can you preserve the files?””
“Yes. I can make copies.””
“Don't delete anything, and don't change the originals. Evelyn needs to handle this properly.””
“I understand.””
Her breathing grew uneven.
“Daniel, there's something else.””
“What?””
“Denise wasn't only trying to get Maya's money. She was trying to make sure you couldn't stop her.””
I gripped the phone.
“What does that mean?””
Rebecca whispered, “She has another document. One that says you agreed to transfer control of the family finances to her permanently.””
My stomach tightened.
“I never signed that.””
“I know.””
“Then who did?””
Rebecca was silent for several seconds.
Finally, she said, “Peter Lawson.””
I stared into the darkening garden.
“How could Peter sign my name?””
“He didn't just sign it. He prepared a whole file showing that you had voluntarily handed over control of your assets.””
I felt sick.
“Why?””
“Because Denise believed that once the loan was approved, she could use the money to settle her debts and move the boys into a property of their own. She said you would be furious at first, but eventually you'd accept it.””
“What debts?””
Rebecca's voice dropped.
“Peter's company was already in trouble. He owed money to several people. Denise thought she could help him recover the investment before anyone found out.””
I closed my eyes.
“So the property was never really for Tyler and Brandon?””
“I don't know what Denise believed at the beginning. But by the time I realized how much money was involved, Peter was using the business accounts to cover other debts.””
I stared at the phone.
The story was getting worse with every answer.

Then Rebecca said the words I had been dreading.
“Daniel, you need to know that Peter has disappeared.””
