Chapter 6: The Man Who Stole a Legacy

Richard Vale stood at the top of the staircase like a ghost that had finally decided to stop hiding.

The years had changed him.

His hair, once perfectly black, was now silver at the edges. His face carried deeper lines, but his eyes were exactly the same.

Cold.

Calculating.

The same eyes that had watched my husband lose everything.

For a moment, nobody moved.

The underground room felt smaller.

The air felt heavier.

Then Richard smiled.

“Evelyn Harper.””

Hearing my name from his mouth made my stomach turn.

I stepped forward.

“You knew I was here.””

Richard slowly descended the stairs.

“I knew eventually you would find this place.””

Arthur moved between us.

“You broke into private property.””

Richard looked at him with mild amusement.

“Arthur Bell. Still protecting the family name?””

Arthur’s jaw tightened.

“You have no right to be here.””

Richard laughed quietly.

“No right?””

He looked around the hidden room.

“This room exists because of me.””

I stared at him.

“You mean because you stole from Thomas.””

His smile disappeared.

“Careful, Evelyn.””

“Why?””

I lifted the photograph in my hand.

“Because the truth hurts?””

Richard’s eyes moved to the picture.

For the first time, his confidence cracked.

Only slightly.

But I saw it.

“You shouldn’t have found that.””

Claire stepped forward.

“What does that mean?””

Richard ignored her.

He looked directly at me.

“Thomas never told you everything, did he?””

My fingers tightened around the photograph.

“Don’t speak about my husband.””

“Your husband had secrets.””

“No.””

My voice was sharper than I expected.

“He had pain. Because of you.””

Richard shook his head.

“You always believed he was the victim.””

“Because he was.””

Richard walked toward the table.

“You loved him. That made you blind.””

I remembered Thomas sitting alone in the kitchen.

I remembered his broken expression.

I remembered every night he spent trying to prove the truth.

And suddenly, I wasn’t afraid of Richard anymore.

“You made him believe nobody would ever believe him.””

Richard looked at me.

“And I was right.””

Arthur stepped forward.

“You framed him.””

Richard smiled.

“I saved the company.””

“No,” Arthur said.

“You saved yourself.””

The room went silent.

Richard looked at Arthur carefully.

“You should be careful, Arthur. Your father knew exactly what happened.””

Claire froze.

“My grandfather?””

Richard smiled.

“Yes.””

She looked at Arthur.

“Dad?””

Arthur looked away.

And that was the moment I knew.

There was another secret.

One Arthur had not told us.

“What is he talking about?”” I asked.

Arthur remained silent.

Richard answered for him.

“Thomas didn’t lose because of me alone.””

My heart sank.

“Then who else?””

Richard looked at Arthur.

“Your husband’s biggest mistake was trusting the Bell family.””

Claire looked horrified.

“That’s a lie.””

Richard shrugged.

“Maybe.””

Then he reached inside his coat.

Arthur immediately reacted.

“Don’t.””

Richard slowly pulled out a small envelope.

Not a weapon.

A document.

“I came here for this.””

He placed it on the table.

The paper looked old.

Very old.

“What is it?”” Claire asked.

Richard didn’t answer.

I looked at Arthur.

He looked terrified.

Not angry.

Terrified.

And that frightened me more.

“Arthur,” I said quietly.

He closed his eyes.

“I never wanted you to know this.””

My heart began pounding.

“Know what?””

Arthur looked at me.

“Thomas didn’t hide that room because he was afraid Richard would steal his designs.””

He swallowed.

“He hid it because he discovered someone else was involved.””

The silence was unbearable.

“Who?””

Arthur looked down.

Then Richard smiled.

“Ask him.””

I turned toward Arthur.

“Who?””

For several seconds, he said nothing.

Then he whispered:

“My father.””

Claire stepped back.

“What?””

Arthur’s voice broke.

“My father knew Richard was stealing Thomas’s work.””

I stared at him.

“And he let it happen?””

Arthur nodded slowly.

“Yes.””

The room seemed to spin.

For twenty years, I had believed there was one villain.

Richard Vale.

One enemy.

One person who destroyed my husband.

But now I realized the truth was bigger.

Much bigger.

Richard picked up the envelope.

“And that document proves it.””

Arthur moved quickly.

“Richard, don’t.””

Richard laughed.

“Still protecting your father’s reputation?””

“No.””

Arthur looked at him.

“I’m protecting the truth.””

Richard studied him.

Then suddenly tossed the envelope across the room.

It landed near my feet.

I picked it up.

My hands trembled as I opened it.

Inside was a letter.

Written by Thomas.

My breath caught.

The first line made my knees weak.

“Evelyn, if you are reading this, it means I was right to hide the truth.””

I continued reading.

“My love, there is something I never told you…”

I stopped.

May you like

Because the next sentence changed everything.

“Daniel is alive.””
