Chapter 2: The Mark Hidden in Silver

Arthur Bell had walked into hundreds of luxury stores.

He had seen angry customers.

He had seen employee mistakes.

He had seen arguments over prices, returns, and rare collections.

But he had never looked afraid.

Until that moment.

He slowly approached the counter.

“Ma’am,” he said quietly.

“May I ask your name?””

I adjusted my cardigan.

“Evelyn Harper.””

The color drained further from his face.

“Evelyn Harper?””

“Yes.””

He looked at Julian.

Then back at me.

“Do you know what that bracelet is?””

I glanced down.

“My husband gave it to me.””

Arthur swallowed.

“Your husband’s name?””

“Thomas Harper.””

The silence that followed felt heavier than before.

Julian suddenly stepped forward.

“Arthur, this woman caused a disturbance. She refused to leave and—”

“Stop.””

Arthur’s voice was calm.

But it carried enough power to freeze the room.

Julian stopped immediately.

Arthur pointed at the bracelet.

“Where did this come from?””

Julian looked confused.

“I don’t know. It was hers.””

Arthur ignored him.

He was speaking only to me.

“That bracelet was created thirty-eight years ago.””

I nodded.

“I know.””

His eyebrows lifted.

“You know?””

“My husband designed it.””

The VIP customer lowered her handbag.

“Wait,” she said.

“Designed it?””

I looked at her.

“Yes.””

Arthur slowly reached into his briefcase and removed his phone.

His hands were shaking.

“That symbol inside the clasp…”

He looked at the tiny engraving.

“It belongs to the original founder.””

Julian laughed nervously.

“Arthur, that’s impossible.””

Arthur turned.

“Why?””

“Because that collection was destroyed.””

The room went still.

I noticed the security guard staring at Julian.

“What collection?”” he asked.

Arthur looked at me.

“The Heritage Collection.””

The words carried weight.

I remembered the day Thomas brought the bracelet home.

He had been younger then. Full of dreams.

He had placed the small box on the kitchen table while I was cooking dinner.

“You’re going to laugh,” he told me.

I smiled.

“I married you. I’ve already survived your terrible jokes.””

He laughed.

Then he opened the box.

Inside was the silver bracelet.

“I made this.””

I touched it carefully.

“For me?””

“For you.””

“Why?””

Thomas looked embarrassed.

“Because everyone keeps telling me luxury jewelry is about making people notice you.””

He held my hand.

“I think the best jewelry should remind someone they are loved, even when nobody else is watching.””

I wore it every day after that.

Even after he passed away.

Especially after he passed away.

Arthur looked at me.

“Mrs. Harper, your husband wasn’t just a designer.””

I felt my throat tighten.

“He was.””

“No,” Arthur said.

He glanced at Julian.

“He was the reason this company became what it is.””

The VIP customer stepped back.

“You mean…”

Arthur nodded.

“Thomas Harper was the original creative director.””

Julian’s expression collapsed.

The man who had called me too poor to enter the store suddenly looked like he had forgotten how to breathe.

“I didn’t know,” he whispered.

I looked at him.

“That was the problem.””

Arthur’s jaw tightened.

He turned toward the security guard.

“Do you have cameras?””

The guard hesitated.

“Yes.””

“Good.””

Julian immediately stepped forward.

“Arthur, there’s no need to make this bigger than it is.””

Arthur looked at him.

“You struck an elderly customer.””

“I didn’t mean to—”

“You put your hands on her.””

Julian became silent.

Arthur looked back at me.

“Mrs. Harper, I owe you an apology.””

I shook my head.

“No.””

He looked surprised.

“I don’t want an apology from you.””

“Then what do you want?””

I looked at the bracelet.

“I want to know why the company my husband built forgot the values he believed in.””

Arthur had no answer.

Because he knew.

The problem was not just Julian.

The problem was what Julian represented.

A system that had forgotten the people behind the products.

Then Arthur’s phone rang.

He looked at the screen.

His expression changed.

“What is it?”” I asked.

He stared at the message.

“It’s impossible.””

“What?””

He turned the phone toward me.

There was one sentence.

A name.

And a photograph attached.

My hands went cold when I saw who was standing beside Julian in the image.

May you like

Because I recognized him.

He was the person who had betrayed my husband twenty years ago.
