Chapter 9: The Last Lie Nicole Told
The police report was filed the next morning.
The lawyer took over.
The investigator collected everything.
For the first time, I thought maybe we could finally breathe.
But Nicole wasn’t finished.
People like her don’t disappear quietly.
They fight harder when they lose control.
Three days later, she appeared outside our house.
Dad opened the door before I could see her.
I stayed behind the wall.
Listening.
“Maya isn’t your daughter anymore if you keep protecting her.””
My heart stopped.
Dad’s voice was cold.
“Leave.””
Nicole laughed.
“You still don’t understand.””
“I understand everything.””
“No.””
Her voice softened.
“That’s what I’m counting on.””
Silence.
Then Dad said:
“You manipulated my family.””
Nicole replied:
“I saved you.””
I almost laughed.
Saved.
That word.
The word she always used.
“You were broken, Marcus.””
Dad didn’t answer.
“You needed someone.””
“No.””
His voice shook.
“You needed me to need you.””
Silence.
Then Nicole whispered:
“Ask Maya what her mother really knew.””
My body froze.
What?
Dad stepped outside.
“What did you say?””
Nicole smiled.
I knew because I could hear it in her voice.
“She never told you everything.””
Dad came inside moments later.
His face was pale.
“Maya.””
I walked out.
“What?””
He looked at me.
“Did your mother ever tell you anything about Nicole?””
“No.””
Nicole’s words echoed.
Ask Maya.
But I knew.
I had one memory.
One strange memory I had buried.
A week before Mom died, she held me in the kitchen.
She looked scared.
I had forgotten until that moment.
She touched my hair and said:
“Maya, promise me something.””
“What?””
“If anyone ever tries to make you feel small, remember who you are.””
I had thought it was just a goodbye.
Now I wondered if it was a warning.
That night, Dad and I searched through Mom’s old belongings.
Then we found it.
A hidden compartment inside her jewelry box.
Inside was a flash drive.
My father stared.
“How did we never find this?””
Because Mom hid it.
For me.
We opened it.
There was one video.
My mother appeared on the screen.
Older.
Tired.
But smiling.
“Hi, Maya.””
I immediately started crying.
Dad grabbed my hand.
My mother looked directly into the camera.
“If you are watching this, something happened.””
She took a breath.
“I need you to listen carefully.””
Then she said the words that changed everything.
“Nicole will try to convince you she loved this family.””
A tear rolled down my face.
“But love does not require someone else to disappear.””
Dad closed his eyes.
My mother continued.
“She became interested in Marcus before I got sick.””
I looked at Dad.
“She wanted access to our money.””
Then my mother paused.
“But there is something worse.””
The video glitched.
Then returned.
My mother looked terrified.
“Nicole was not working alone.””
Dad leaned forward.
“Who?””
My mother looked at the camera.
And said a name.
A name we had already heard.
Daniel Whitmore.
But then she added something else.
“Daniel is not the person controlling Nicole.””
The room went silent.
My mother whispered:
“There is someone above both of them.””
The video ended.
No goodbye.
No explanation.
Just darkness.
Dad and I sat there.
Unable to move.
Then his phone rang.
Unknown number.
He answered.
“Hello?””
A voice spoke.
A voice that made his face change.
“What?””
I stood.
“Dad?””
He looked at me.
The phone slowly lowered.
“Maya.””
“What happened?””
He swallowed.
“Nicole was arrested.””
I felt relief.
Until I saw his expression.
“What?””
He whispered:
“She confessed.””
My heart stopped.
“Then why do you look scared?””
Because Dad looked at the screen.
May you like
And said:
“She said she was never the one making the decisions.””
