Chapter 6: The Name Hidden In The File

The courtroom became so quiet that I could hear the clock above the judge’s desk ticking.

Tick.

Tick.

Tick.

It felt like everyone was waiting for someone else to explain what was happening.

My father stared at the documents in front of the judge.

I stared at him.

Because for the first time since this nightmare began, I saw something in his eyes that wasn’t anger.

It was fear.

The judge lifted the file.

“Mr. Hayes, do you know this woman?””

My father swallowed.

“No.””

The judge looked down again.

“Then explain why your late wife’s name appears in these records.””

My father didn’t answer.

He couldn’t.

I reached for his hand.

His fingers were cold.

The lawyer who had represented Nicole stood quietly near his table.

He looked uncomfortable.

Like he wished he could disappear.

The judge turned toward him.

“Mr. Carter, you said this evidence came from a previous attorney?””

“Yes, Your Honor.””

“And you are certain it is authentic?””

“Yes.””

The judge opened the first page.

I watched her eyes move across the paper.

Then her expression changed.

“This is a timeline.””

Nobody spoke.

The judge continued reading.

“Nicole Whitmore. Target identification. Initial contact. Emotional positioning.””

My stomach twisted.

Target identification.

That wasn’t something someone wrote about falling in love.

That was something someone wrote about hunting.

Nicole suddenly stood.

“This is ridiculous.””

The judge looked up.

“Sit down.””

Her voice was calm.

But everyone listened.

Nicole slowly lowered herself back into her chair.

For once, she looked small.

The judge continued.

“Mr. Carter, who created this document?””

The lawyer hesitated.

“Nicole.””

A wave of whispers moved through the courtroom.

Nicole turned toward him.

“You promised.””

The lawyer froze.

The judge’s eyes narrowed.

“Promised what?””

Nicole said nothing.

And that silence told everyone enough.

My father leaned closer to me.

“Don’t look at her.””

I looked at him.

“Why?””

“Because she wants you afraid.””

I nodded.

But the truth was…

I wasn’t afraid anymore.

Not the way I used to be.

The judge reviewed more pages.

Then she stopped.

“This entry is dated five years ago.””

My father stiffened.

“That’s impossible.””

The judge looked at him.

“Why?””

“Because that was before Nicole and I met.””

She looked down.

“Exactly.””

My heart started pounding.

The judge turned another page.

“This appears to be notes about your family.””

My father’s face went pale.

“What family?””

The judge looked at him.

“Your family.””

The room became silent again.

Then she read:

“Widower. One daughter. Recently grieving. Emotionally vulnerable.””

I felt like the air had disappeared.

My father closed his eyes.

Because suddenly we understood.

Nicole didn’t find us by accident.

She found us because we were exactly what she was looking for.

After the hearing, we walked outside without speaking.

The sunlight felt strange.

Too normal.

Like the world didn’t understand that ours had completely changed.

Dad stopped near the courthouse steps.

“Maya.””

I turned.

“I need to tell you something.””

I waited.

He looked ashamed.

“Your mother knew about Nicole.””

My heart dropped.

“What?””

Dad looked toward the street.

“Not everything.””

“Then what?””

He rubbed his forehead.

“A few weeks before she passed, your mother told me she felt uncomfortable around Nicole.””

I stared at him.

“Why didn’t you tell me?””

“Because I thought it was grief.””

His voice cracked.

“I thought your mother was scared of leaving you behind. I thought she was trying to protect you from everyone.””

I looked away.

“But she was right.””

“Yes.””

That word hurt.

Because it meant my mother had seen the danger.

And nobody listened.

That night, Dad went through old boxes from the attic.

I sat beside him as he searched.

Hours passed.

Then suddenly, he stopped.

“Maya.””

I looked up.

He was holding an envelope.

My mother’s handwriting was on the front.

My name.

Not his.

Mine.

My hands started shaking.

“What is it?””

He looked at the date.

It was written three days before Mom died.

“I don’t know.””

I reached for it.

But Dad held it for a moment.

“Are you ready?””

I nodded.

He handed it to me.

Inside was a letter.

The first line made my breath catch.

*My sweet Maya, if you are reading this, it means I was right to be worried.*

I kept reading.

My mother wrote that she had noticed Nicole asking strange questions.

Questions about our money.

Questions about Dad’s insurance.

Questions about what would happen to me if something happened to her.

Then came the sentence that made my hands go numb.

*I believe Nicole wants something from our family, but I don’t know what.*

I looked at Dad.

He was reading over my shoulder.

Neither of us spoke.

Until we reached the final paragraph.

*Maya, there is one thing I need you to know. If Nicole ever becomes part of your life, do not trust the way she smiles. People who want something badly can pretend to love you better than anyone.*

I covered my mouth.

My mother knew.

She knew.

Then I saw something written at the bottom.

A name.

A name that made Dad stand suddenly.

“What?””

He grabbed the paper.

“What is it?””

I pointed.

Beneath my mother’s signature was one sentence.

*I found out who introduced Nicole to Marcus.*

Dad stared.

Then he whispered:

“That’s impossible.””

“Who?””

He looked at me.

May you like

And for the first time, I saw pure shock on his face.

“Her mother.””
