Chapter 5: The Walk Down the Aisle

I didn’t cancel the wedding.

That surprised everyone.

My mother thought I would.

Michael thought I would.

Even Ethan asked me twice if I was sure.

But I knew one thing.

I was tired of letting other people decide what my story meant.

The morning of the wedding, I arrived at the venue before anyone else.

The empty room looked beautiful.

White flowers.

Golden lights.

Rows of chairs waiting for guests.

For a moment, I remembered being eight years old, standing on a chair while Michael helped me decorate our Christmas tree.

“Not too high,” he had said.

“Why?””

“Because I need you close enough to catch.””

That was Michael.

Always ready to catch me.

An hour later, Daniel arrived.

He wore a perfectly tailored suit.

He looked like someone preparing for a photograph.

“Emma.””

I turned.

“You changed the contract.””

His smile disappeared.

“I was trying to protect myself.””

“From what?””

“From being erased.””

I stared at him.

“You did that yourself.””

His face hardened.

“You’re really going to choose him?””

I looked past him.

Michael stood near the entrance.

Quiet.

Waiting.

Not demanding.

Not fighting.

Just waiting.

“Yes,” I said.

Daniel laughed softly.

“After everything I did?””

I looked at him.

“You mean everything you paid for?””

He went silent.

That was the first time I saw fear in his eyes.

“You don’t understand.””

“No. I do.””

I stepped closer.

“You wanted the title without the years.””

His expression changed.

“You’re my daughter.””

I nodded.

“I am.””

Then I said the sentence I had waited my whole life to say.

“But being my father was never about biology.””

Daniel looked away.

For once, he had no speech.

No excuse.

No explanation.

Just silence.

Before the ceremony began, I found Michael outside.

He was standing near the garden.

“You came.””

He smiled faintly.

“I was invited.””

I looked down.

“I’m sorry.””

He shook his head.

“Emma.””

“No. Let me say it.””

My voice broke.

“I spent so much time wondering why he left that I forgot to see who stayed.””

Michael looked at me.

“I never needed the aisle.””

I cried.

“Yes, you did.””

He smiled sadly.

“I needed you to know I was already your father.””

The music started inside.

Guests began taking their seats.

I held out my arm.

“Dad?””

His eyes filled.

“Yes?””

“Will you walk me down the aisle?””

For a moment, he couldn’t speak.

Then he nodded.

“I’d like that.””

When the doors opened, everyone stood.

Michael and I walked together.

And at the end of the aisle, Ethan was waiting.

But before we reached him, someone stood up from the front row.

Daniel.

He looked angry.

Confused.

And scared.

He held a piece of paper in his hand.

“Emma.””

The entire room went silent.

He walked toward us.

“I need to tell you something before this ceremony continues.””

Michael stepped slightly in front of me.

But I stopped him.

“No.””

I looked at Daniel.

“What is it?””

His eyes moved between us.

Then he said:

“The letter your mother gave you…”

My heart stopped.

“What about it?””

Daniel swallowed.

“She wasn’t the one who wrote it.””

The room disappeared.

“What?””

He held up the paper.

“Because I have the original.””

May you like

And then he said the words that changed everything:

“Your mother lied about why I left.””
