Chapter 3: The Secret in the Basement

I spent the next hour staring at the picture Daniel sent me.

Michael’s signature was there.

A date.

A legal document.

Proof.

Or at least, it looked like proof.

I wanted to believe Michael.

But doubt is dangerous.

Especially when someone gives it a reason to exist.

I went back inside the house.

“Did you sign something involving my inheritance?””

Michael didn’t answer immediately.

That scared me more than if he had shouted.

“Yes.””

My chest tightened.

“What was it?””

He sat down slowly.

“When your grandmother passed away, the money was placed in a trust.””

“I know.””

“You don’t know everything.””

I waited.

Michael rubbed his hands together.

“When you were seventeen, Daniel contacted us.””

My eyes widened.

“He contacted you?””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

Michael looked exhausted.

“Because he wanted money.””

The room went silent.

“He said he was your father and deserved to be involved.””

I felt sick.

“What did you do?””

“I hired a lawyer.””

“And the document?””

Michael looked at the floor.

“It was a protection agreement.””

I frowned.

“What does that mean?””

“It meant Daniel couldn’t access your inheritance without your approval.””

I stared at him.

“Then why didn’t you tell me?””

“Because I wanted you to have a normal life.””

I shook my head.

“You should have told me.””

“You were seventeen, Emma. You were already trying to understand why your father left.””

His voice cracked.

“I didn’t want you to spend your teenage years fighting a man who should have been protecting you.””

I looked away.

For years, I had imagined Michael hiding something terrible.

But now the truth was more complicated.

He had been hiding pain.

Not betrayal.

That evening, Daniel arrived at my apartment.

Uninvited.

Of course.

He stood outside my door holding another folder.

“You need to hear my side.””

I didn’t open the door fully.

“My side?””

“Yes.””

I laughed.

“You abandoned me.””

His face tightened.

“I was young.””

“You were thirty-two.””

“I made mistakes.””

“You keep calling them mistakes.””

He looked angry now.

“You don’t know what happened.””

“Then tell me.””

For a moment, I thought he would.

Instead, he said:

“Your stepfather manipulated you against me.””

My stomach dropped.

“What?””

“He wanted to replace me.””

I almost couldn’t believe what I was hearing.

“Michael changed diapers when I was sick.””

Daniel looked away.

“He wanted that role.””

“He earned that role.””

That sentence hit him.

He stepped back.

“You really believe that?””

“Yes.””

His expression became colder.

“Then maybe you don’t deserve to know the truth.””

I stared at him.

“What truth?””

He held up the folder.

“Ask Michael why he never told you who your real father was.””

My blood ran cold.

“What does that mean?””

Daniel smiled slightly.

Not warmly.

Like someone who knew something I didn’t.

“Ask him about the night I left.””

Then he walked away.

I stood there frozen.

Because suddenly there was a question I had avoided my entire life.

Why did Daniel leave?

That night, I searched through old boxes in my mother’s basement.

I found birthday cards.

School photos.

Old clothes.

And finally, a small locked box with my name written on it.

Inside was a letter.

The handwriting was my mother’s.

My hands shook as I opened it.

The first line made my heart stop.

*“Emma, if you are reading this, then you are old enough to know why your father really left.””*
