Chapter 8: The Eighteen-Million-Dollar Lie

The ballroom became chaotic.

Guests whispered. Chairs scraped against the floor. Someone began collecting abandoned champagne glasses.

Richard held up his hand.

"Everyone, please remain calm.""

Roland stood near the stage, staring at his phone.

Beatrix approached him.

"What money has been moved?""

He looked at her.

"That's none of your concern.""

Richard's expression hardened.

"It is if trust assets have been transferred without authorization.""

Roland put his phone away.

"There's been an administrative adjustment.""

Alistair laughed.

"That's what you called the money you took from Eleanor's company.""

Roland turned on him.

"Stay out of this.""

Richard looked at Beatrix.

"Can you explain what you know?""

She opened her folder.

"Based on the records we've obtained, Mr. Mercer appears to have used a series of unauthorized transfers to secure a development loan. Some of those funds originated from Eleanor's business reserve account.""

Richard frowned.

"How much?""

"Four hundred and eighty thousand dollars.""

He looked at Roland.

"Is that true?""

Roland rubbed his jaw.

"The funds were temporarily allocated.""

"Without Eleanor's authorization?""

"She was my wife.""

"That wasn't my question.""

Roland didn't answer.

Beatrix continued.

"We also have evidence of a forged signature on a transfer authorization.""

Richard turned toward me.

"Ms. Mercer, is this your signature?""

I placed the original document in front of him.

"No.""

He studied it.

Then he looked at Roland.

"Explain.""

Roland spread his hands.

"She signed it years ago. She simply doesn't remember.""

I almost laughed.

"You have spent your entire life believing that if you repeat a lie confidently enough, it becomes true.""

He glared at me.

Beatrix interrupted.

"We have the original digital access logs, the document history, and the forensic examination is underway. Your denial doesn't change the evidence.""

Richard turned toward Martin.

"Have you verified the transfers?""

Martin opened his folder.

"Yes. We traced the funds through three corporate accounts. A substantial portion was then transferred into a development company controlled by Roland.""

Richard sat down.

"Good Lord.""

Roland's mother approached.

"Richard, this is a family matter.""

He looked at her.

"Apparently, it's a financial matter too.""

She turned toward me.

"Eleanor, why are you doing this?""

I stared at her.

"Why am I doing what?""

"Bringing private matters into public.""

I remembered her standing beside Camille at my wedding, telling everyone how lucky Roland was to have found such a wonderful woman.

I remembered her sending me a message after the divorce.

Perhaps you should accept that some women are simply better suited to marriage.

Now she stood before me pretending she had no idea how the situation had developed.

I answered quietly.

"Because your family spent years making my private suffering public.""

She looked away.

Richard asked everyone except the relevant parties to leave the immediate area.

Within minutes, most of the guests had moved into the adjoining reception room.

Camille sat on a chair near the stage.

Her makeup was running.

Roland paced.

Alistair stood beside the windows.

And I remained near Beatrix.

Richard opened another document.

"Roland, I want to know exactly what happened to the trust assets.""

Roland stopped pacing.

"The funds were moved to protect the development.""

"From what?""

"Market volatility.""

"Who authorized the transfer?""

Roland hesitated.

Then he said, "I did.""

Richard removed his glasses.

"You do not have unilateral authority.""

"I was acting in the family's interest.""

"Then why was the transfer concealed?""

Roland said nothing.

Richard turned toward Beatrix.

"Can you provide the supporting records?""

"Yes.""

She handed him another folder.

The first page contained a transfer instruction.

The second contained a company registration.

The third contained a signature.

Richard stared at it.

"That's not my signature.""

I looked at the page.

The transfer had been authorized under Richard's name.

Roland's face went rigid.

Richard slowly looked up.

"Did you forge my signature?""

Roland's silence answered.

Camille began crying again.

"Roland, you told me everything was legal.""

He snapped.

"Not now!""

She stood.

"You said nobody could touch the money.""

"I said I would handle it.""

"You said the baby would inherit everything!""

Richard slammed the folder shut.

"Enough.""

He took out his phone.

"I am contacting the trust's independent legal advisers. All pending transfers will be reviewed. Until that review is complete, no beneficiary changes or distributions will proceed.""

Roland lunged toward him.

"You can't freeze everything!""

Richard stood.

"I can protect assets from unauthorized transactions.""

The security staff moved closer.

Roland stopped.

Then he turned toward me.

"This is what you wanted, isn't it?""

I looked at him.

"No, Roland. What I wanted was a husband who didn't make me feel worthless because I couldn't get pregnant.""

His face twisted.

"Don't act innocent. You benefited from everything I built.""

I stared.

"My company existed before I met you.""

"I helped you grow it.""

"You helped yourself to its money.""

"You have no proof.""

Beatrix stepped forward.

"Actually, we do.""

She handed him a document.

"These are the account access records. The original transfer authorization. And the clinic's confirmation that the consent form was never processed.""

Roland looked at the papers.

His hands began to shake.

Then Camille stood.

"You're going to let him blame everything on me?""

Roland turned.

"Camille, sit down.""

"No!""

She pointed at him.

"You promised me the estate. You promised me the trust. You promised that after the baby was born, we'd never have to worry about money again.""

Roland stepped toward her.

"You knew what we were doing.""

"I knew what you told me!""

Alistair finally spoke.

"Camille, you knew the baby was mine.""

She looked at him.

"I loved you.""

He shook his head.

"You loved what you thought I could give you.""

She began sobbing.

"You don't understand. Roland said he'd make me a Mercer. He said the baby would have everything.""

Alistair's expression hardened.

"He already has a father.""

I looked at Camille.

For years, I'd imagined the moment when she'd finally understand what she'd done.

I thought I'd feel satisfaction.

Instead, I felt tired.

A very deep, permanent tiredness.

I picked up my handbag.

Beatrix touched my arm.

"Eleanor, we're not finished.""

"I know.""

She lowered her voice.

"There's another issue.""

I followed her a few steps away.

"What?""

"The trust's independent adviser just contacted Richard.""

"About what?""

Beatrix looked at me.

"The money isn't simply sitting in another account. It was transferred into a property development company. That company has already pledged the assets against a large loan.""

I frowned.

"How large?""

"Nearly twelve million dollars.""

I stared at her.

"And if the company defaults?""

"The trust could lose its controlling property interest.""

I looked toward Roland.

He was arguing with Richard again.

Then I understood.

This wasn't just about securing a baby as an heir.

Roland had used the child, the marriage, and my forged documents to create a financial structure that would give him access to money he didn't own.

"Can he recover it?""

"We'll need to investigate.""

Before I could respond, Martin approached us.

"There's something else.""

He handed Beatrix a printed email.

It was dated six weeks earlier.

The sender was Roland.

The recipient was an external investment adviser.

The subject line read:

*Final stage — Eleanor's business and family trust.*

I read the first paragraph.

Then the second.

My heart began pounding.

The email stated that once the divorce-related claim against my company was resolved, Roland intended to transfer his interest into the development company.

But the final sentence was what made me go cold.

Once the baby is publicly accepted as my son, Alistair will no longer have any reason to challenge the arrangement.

I looked at Alistair.

He was staring at the page.

"Did you know about this?""

He shook his head.

"No.""

Beatrix took the email.

"Where did you find it?""

"On an archived company server.""

Martin pointed to the final attachment.

"There was a second file.""

Beatrix opened it.

A scanned legal document appeared.

It was a draft agreement concerning parental rights.

At the bottom were three names.

Roland Mercer.

Camille Bennett.

And Alistair Mercer.

But the document contained a fourth section.

One that had never been signed.

It was titled:

*Contingency: Removal of Biological Father's Claims.*

I read the first line.

And then I looked at Alistair.

Because the document wasn't merely designed to keep him away from the baby.

May you like

It contained a plan to have him declared legally unfit.

And the person who had agreed to provide the supporting evidence was Camille.
