Chapter 7: The Father Nobody Was Supposed to Name

For several seconds, nobody spoke.

Then Roland laughed.

It was a short, ugly sound.

"Alistair, this isn't the place.""

Alistair didn't move.

"You're right. It isn't.""

He looked around the ballroom.

"But you chose this place to announce that the baby was yours.""

Roland stepped closer.

"Lower your voice.""

"Why? Are you worried someone might hear the truth?""

Camille grabbed Roland's arm.

"Please, don't do this.""

I watched her carefully.

For the first time since I'd known her, she wasn't crying.

She was frightened.

Richard Mercer rose from his chair.

"What's happening?""

Beatrix approached him.

"Mr. Mercer, I believe you should hear some information before any family announcement is accepted as legally significant.""

Roland pointed at her.

"This is a private family event.""

Beatrix calmly placed her folder on the nearest table.

"Then perhaps you shouldn't have used it to announce disputed business and inheritance arrangements.""

Richard looked between them.

"Roland?""

Roland forced a smile.

"This is a misunderstanding.""

Alistair shook his head.

"No. It's a lie.""

He turned toward the guests.

"Camille and I were involved before Roland married her.""

A woman near the stage gasped.

Alistair continued.

"She became pregnant. I am the biological father.""

Camille finally found her voice.

"That's not true!""

Alistair looked at her.

"Camille, don't.""

She shook her head.

"You're trying to destroy my marriage.""

He reached into his jacket.

"I brought the original messages.""

He handed them to Beatrix.

She passed the copies to Richard.

Roland snatched the top page.

"These are private communications.""

"Exactly," Alistair replied.

"And they're genuine.""

I watched Roland's fingers tighten around the paper.

One message was dated four months before my divorce.

Camille had written:

I can't keep pretending this is just friendship. I want us to have a future.

Alistair had replied:

Then tell Roland the truth.

Her answer was chilling.

Not yet. I need to know what he can offer me first.

Another message followed.

He thinks I can give him the family he wants. He doesn't need to know the baby isn't his.

A murmur spread across the room.

Camille shook her head.

"Those messages are out of context!""

Alistair looked at her.

"Then explain them.""

She turned toward Roland.

"Tell them!""

Roland didn't answer.

Instead, he looked at Richard.

"Uncle Richard, we need to discuss this privately.""

Richard examined the documents.

"Is the child yours?""

Roland's face hardened.

"The child will carry my name.""

"That's not what I asked.""

Camille began crying.

"Roland, please.""

He turned toward her.

"Don't.""

The single word silenced her.

Then Alistair said something I hadn't expected.

"Roland knew about my relationship with Camille before he married her. He also knew the baby was mine.""

Richard slowly removed his glasses.

"Is that true?""

Roland looked at his brother.

"You have no idea what you're talking about.""

Alistair pulled out a medical report.

"This is the paternity analysis.""

He placed it on the table.

Beatrix stepped forward.

"The laboratory has independently confirmed the result. Mr. Mercer is the biological father with a probability of 99.99%.""

Someone dropped a glass.

It shattered against the marble floor.

Camille covered her mouth.

Roland looked at me.

"You did this.""

I shook my head.

"No. You did this. I simply stopped protecting your lies.""

He moved toward me.

"You've been planning this.""

I looked at him.

"For years, you told everyone I was the reason we couldn't have children.""

His face tightened.

"You don't understand.""

"I understand your medical records perfectly well.""

I opened my folder and removed the specialist's report.

"Congenital azoospermia. Documented before our marriage. You knew you couldn't father a child naturally.""

Several guests turned toward Roland.

His mother stood abruptly.

"That's private medical information!""

I looked at her.

"It became public when your son spent six years telling people I was infertile.""

She opened her mouth.

Then closed it.

I continued.

"He blamed me for every failed treatment. He watched me inject hormones into my stomach. He watched me cry after every negative result. And he knew.""

Roland stepped forward.

"Enough.""

"No.""

My voice surprised even me.

"No more.""

I turned toward the guests.

"I spent six years believing something was wrong with me. I spent another year believing my best friend had simply fallen in love with my husband.""

I looked at Camille.

"But she wasn't simply in love with him. She was involved with his brother, and Roland knew about the pregnancy before our divorce was finalized.""

Camille wiped her cheeks.

"Ellie, please.""

I looked at her.

"You invited me here to celebrate your happiness. I'm only making sure everyone understands what they're celebrating.""

Richard picked up the paternity report.

He read it slowly.

Then he turned toward Roland.

"Does the trust agreement contain a declaration of biological paternity?""

Roland didn't answer.

Richard looked at Beatrix.

"Can you clarify the implications?""

She opened her folder.

"Certainly. The Mercer family trust contains provisions relating to biological descendants and designated beneficiaries. Any attempt to obtain control through a knowingly false declaration may be subject to legal challenge.""

Roland's expression changed.

Richard turned toward him.

"Have you already submitted a declaration?""

Roland looked at Camille.

She stared back.

Then he said, "Not yet.""

Richard nodded.

"Good. Then nothing further should be filed until the facts are established.""

Roland's voice rose.

"You can't do that!""

Richard looked at him.

"I'm the trustee. I can certainly suspend consideration of a disputed beneficiary claim.""

For the first time, Roland seemed to understand that the situation was slipping beyond his control.

He turned toward me.

"You think you've won?""

I looked at him.

"I think you should stop talking.""

He laughed bitterly.

"You have no idea what I've done for this family.""

Alistair stepped forward.

"Neither do you.""

Roland swung toward him.

"You're the one who caused this!""

Alistair's voice remained steady.

"I'm the father. I made mistakes, but I never blamed Eleanor for something I knew she couldn't control.""

Camille suddenly grabbed the microphone.

"That's enough!""

Everyone turned.

She was trembling.

"You're all acting like I'm some kind of criminal. Roland knew everything. He wanted this arrangement. He told me the baby would be raised as his son.""

Richard stared at her.

"An arrangement?""

Camille looked at Roland.

He shook his head slightly.

But she continued.

"He said the trust would be secure. He said we'd have the estate. He said nobody would question anything.""

I felt a chill.

"Camille, did you know about the forged consent form?""

She froze.

Roland's head snapped toward her.

"What consent form?""

I removed the copy from my folder.

"This one.""

Camille looked at the document.

Her face drained of color.

Beatrix stepped beside me.

"This is a medical consent form bearing Eleanor's forged signature. The clinic has confirmed it was never processed. We have evidence that Camille accessed Eleanor's medical file and requested a copy.""

Richard looked at Roland.

"Did you know about this?""

Roland remained silent.

Then Camille whispered:

"He told me to get it.""

The room went completely still.

Roland grabbed her arm.

"Shut up.""

She pulled away.

"Don't touch me!""

The microphone slipped from her hand.

It struck the stage with a loud crack.

I looked at Camille.

For the first time, she wasn't performing for an audience.

She was terrified of the man she'd chosen.

And as Roland tried to drag her toward the exit, Richard spoke.

"Nobody leaves until we establish what documents have been submitted to the trust.""

Roland stopped.

Then his phone vibrated.

He looked at the screen.

I saw the expression change.

Whatever had just arrived was worse than anything we'd revealed.

He turned toward Richard.

"Don't suspend the trust.""

Richard frowned.

"Why?""

Roland looked at me.

May you like

Then he whispered:

"Because the money has already been moved.""
