Chapter 6: The Letter My Father Never Wanted Me to Read

I read my father's final sentence three times.

Because the person who truly betrayed this family was never the woman you think it was.

Beneath it was Edward Carter's signature.

Daniel's father.

The man Patricia had spent years describing as a brilliant businessman who built everything from nothing.

The man my father had supposedly rescued when Carter Dynamics was close to bankruptcy.

I looked at Renee through the video call.

“Why would my father write this?””

“I don't know yet,” she answered.

“But the letter was sealed inside the original succession archive. It was marked to be released only if someone attempted to interfere with your voting rights.””

“Can you read it?””

“I can send you the scanned copy. However, there's a handwritten attachment that needs authentication.””

“Send everything.””

A moment later, an email arrived.

I opened the first attachment.

My father's handwriting appeared across the page.

It was the same handwriting I remembered from birthday cards and notes he used to leave beside my breakfast.

My hands began to tremble.

My dearest Nia,

If you're reading this, someone has attempted to take something that belongs to you. I wish I could have prevented that. I wish I could have told you everything while I was still alive.

But there are truths that become dangerous when spoken too early.

Sixteen years ago, Edward Carter came to me with a company that was dying. He had built Carter Dynamics, but his decisions had left it drowning in debt. I invested because I believed in the business and because Edward promised that his family would never use the company to exploit mine.

For a while, he kept his promise.

Then I discovered the payments.

I stopped reading.

“Renee?””

“Yes?””

“What payments?””

“I'm examining the financial archive. Keep reading.””

I continued.

Edward had been moving money through an arrangement involving Victor Hale. He claimed it was necessary to secure international contracts. I later discovered that some of those payments had been diverted into accounts that neither of us had approved.

I confronted him.

He promised to repay every dollar.

He never did.

My stomach tightened.

I wanted to take my investment and leave. But Edward told me something that changed everything.

He said Patricia knew.

I looked up.

Patricia.

My father continued.

She had helped arrange the payments. She believed the money was being used to secure the family's future. But when I discovered the truth, she convinced Edward that I was planning to destroy him.

I later learned that she had been sending him copies of private correspondence between our families.

I sat back.

The woman who had spent three years calling my family unworthy had been involved in the financial arrangement that nearly destroyed my father's investment.

But the letter continued.

I did not tell you because I wanted you to grow up without carrying my anger. I wanted you to choose your own life.

If the Carter family comes after your inheritance, do not assume Patricia is acting alone.

Find the original account records.

And remember this: Edward Carter signed the first agreement protecting your inheritance. He also signed the document that almost destroyed it.

I lowered the phone.

“Renee, what does that mean?””

“I believe your father suspected Edward was involved in both the original investment arrangement and the later financial irregularities.””

“Then why would he leave me his voting rights?””

“Because he may have believed the company could still be protected if the right person controlled it.””

I looked at the letter again.

There was one final paragraph.

There is one person who knows what happened to the missing money. If you ever find him, ask him what happened to the blue ledger.

I whispered the words.

“The blue ledger.””

Renee was silent.

“Does that mean anything to you?”” I asked.

“Not yet. But I found a reference to something called the Blue Ledger in the old audit records.””

“Where?””

“Carter Dynamics' archived accounting department.””

“Can you retrieve it?””

“I'm trying. However, access was restricted shortly after Edward's death.””

“Who restricted it?””

Renee hesitated.

“Daniel Carter.””

I closed my eyes.

Of course.

That evening, Daniel returned to the apartment.

I was sitting at the dining table with my father's letter, three financial reports, and a glass of untouched water.

He stopped when he saw the documents.

“What's all this?””

“My father's letter.””

He pulled out a chair.

“Did you read it?””

“Yes.””

“What did he say?””

I slid the letter toward him.

“Read it yourself.””

Daniel picked it up.

His eyes moved across the pages.

By the time he reached the paragraph about Patricia, his expression had changed.

“My mother was involved in those payments?””

“Apparently.””

“That's impossible.””

“Your mother seems to have a talent for being involved in impossible things.””

He ignored the remark.

“Dad never told me about this.””

“Your father was dead before you became chief operating officer. But you restricted access to the Blue Ledger.””

Daniel looked up.

“What?””

“Renee found your authorization.””

He shook his head.

“I didn't restrict anything.””

“Then explain the record.””

He picked up his phone.

“Let me call the records department.””

“Don't.””

He stopped.

“Why?””

“Because Renee is already preserving the archive. I don't want anyone making changes before the investigation is complete.””

Daniel lowered his phone.

For a moment, he looked genuinely lost.

Then he said, “Nia, I need you to believe me.””

I looked at him.

“I believed you when you said your mother was just difficult. I believed you when you said the financial documents were routine. I believed you when you said you had no idea about Northbridge.””

He looked down.

“I know.””

“Every time I believed you, I discovered another secret.””

He swallowed.

“I was wrong.””

I stood and walked toward the kitchen.

He followed.

“I'm going to help you find the truth.””

“Why now?””

“Because this involves my father.””

I turned.

“And because it involves your position at the company?””

He didn't answer.

I nodded.

“That's what I thought.””

He stepped closer.

“Nia, I know I haven't been the husband you deserved. But I don't want to lose you.””

I looked at him for a long moment.

“Then stop asking me to protect you from the consequences of your decisions.””

His eyes filled with tears.

“I love you.””

I felt the words land somewhere deep inside me.

Once, they would have been enough.

Tonight, they weren't.

“I need the truth more than I need those words.””

My phone vibrated.

A message from Renee.

We located the Blue Ledger reference. The archive indicates it was transferred to a private storage facility four days after Edward Carter's funeral.

Another message followed.

The storage account is registered under Daniel Carter's personal identification.

I slowly turned toward my husband.

“Daniel.””

He looked up.

“What?””

“Why is the Blue Ledger stored under your name?””

His face went pale.

And before he could answer, another message appeared.

The facility records show that someone accessed the storage unit yesterday.

May you like

I read the name attached to the entry.

Patricia Carter.
