Chapter 2: My Husband's Signature

Daniel stared at the document as though the ink might rearrange itself if he looked long enough.

His signature was unmistakable.

A curved D.

A sharp upward stroke.

Then the long line he always added beneath his surname.

I had seen that signature thousands of times.

On birthday cards.

On anniversary notes.

On the mortgage paperwork for the apartment we shared.

And now, on a request to investigate my personal wealth.

“Daniel?”” I asked.

He didn't look up.

“Where did this come from?””

Renee answered before he could.

“The request was submitted through Carter Family Holdings. The stated purpose was a preliminary marital asset assessment. It included information about Ms. Hayes's private investments, voting rights, trusts, and expected distributions.””

Daniel rubbed his forehead.

“I didn't authorize anything like this.””

Richard leaned back.

“Your signature is on the authorization page.””

“I said I don't remember signing it.””

Patricia immediately stepped between Daniel and the other directors.

“He signs hundreds of documents. He cannot possibly remember every administrative request.””

I looked at her.

“Then perhaps you can explain why the request was submitted under his name.””

Patricia's lips pressed together.

“I'm not obligated to explain every internal family matter to you.””

“That's interesting, considering the documents concern my property.””

She turned toward Richard.

“Richard, surely you understand how complicated these arrangements can be. We don't need to discuss private family business in front of everyone.””

Richard didn't respond.

Instead, he opened the second attachment.

His eyebrows rose.

“What is Northbridge Strategic Partners?””

Brielle suddenly grabbed her handbag.

“Can we stop talking about this? I have an early meeting tomorrow.””

I looked at her.

“Sit down, Brielle.””

She froze.

“Excuse me?””

“You were listed as the beneficiary of twelve percent of my voting rights. I think you can spare five minutes.””

Her cheeks flushed.

“I didn't ask for anything.””

“Then you shouldn't have any trouble explaining why your name appears on the document.””

Brielle looked toward her mother.

Patricia gave her a small shake of the head.

It was subtle.

But I saw it.

So did Margaret.

“Patricia,” Margaret said, “did you know about this arrangement?””

Patricia laughed sharply.

“Don't be absurd.””

Margaret turned her phone around.

“Your name appears in the correspondence history.””

Silence.

Patricia's expression hardened.

“That's not proof of wrongdoing. I advise the family on financial matters.””

“Since when?”” Richard asked.

“Since Daniel's father died.””

Daniel finally looked up.

“Mom, you told me Northbridge was a company you were considering investing in.””

“It is.””

“Then why is Brielle listed as the beneficiary of Nia's voting rights?””

Patricia exhaled.

“Because Brielle has the business experience to help protect the company.””

Brielle's mouth dropped open.

“Mom!””

Patricia shot her a warning glance.

I leaned back in my chair.

There it was.

The real reason.

Patricia didn't merely want my shares.

She wanted a voting majority she could control through her daughter.

“Protect the company from what?”” I asked.

“From outside interference.””

“Meaning me?””

“Meaning people who don't understand our family.””

I almost admired her persistence.

Even with evidence displayed on every phone in the room, she still believed she could talk her way out of it.

“Renee,” I said, “what else did you find?””

“Would you like me to explain the Northbridge ownership structure?””

“Yes.””

A few seconds passed.

Then Renee continued.

“Northbridge Strategic Partners was incorporated approximately six months ago. Its registered manager is a company called Westbridge Administrative Services. The beneficial ownership records identify an individual named Victor Hale.””

Daniel looked confused.

“Who is Victor Hale?””

Richard answered quietly.

“He was our former chief financial officer.””

The room changed again.

Victor Hale had left Carter Dynamics two years earlier after an internal audit raised questions about irregular payments.

Daniel turned toward his mother.

“You told me Victor had moved overseas.””

Patricia didn't answer.

Richard opened another attachment.

“Apparently, he didn't move very far.””

“Where is he?”” Daniel asked.

“New York.””

I watched Patricia's face.

Her expression was becoming harder to control.

“Renee,” I said, “please confirm whether Northbridge has any connection to the upcoming acquisition.””

My attorney paused.

“Yes. It appears to have been created shortly before the acquisition proposal was submitted.””

Richard sat forward.

“What acquisition?””

I turned to him.

“The acquisition of Westlake Manufacturing.””

Richard's face drained of color.

Westlake was one of the largest suppliers in the automotive technology sector. Carter Dynamics had been pursuing it for almost a year.

The deal would transform the company's position in the market.

But it also required board approval.

And my voting block was essential.

Richard looked at me.

“Hayes Capital has been reviewing that transaction?””

“Not reviewing. Funding part of it.””

Daniel stared.

“You never told me.””

“I wasn't required to disclose every investment decision to my husband.””

He flinched.

Patricia stepped forward.

“You see? That's exactly the problem. She keeps secrets from this family.””

I turned toward her.

“You mean I have financial privacy?””

“You're married!””

“And marriage doesn't mean you own my decisions.””

Daniel stood.

“Mom, please sit down.””

Patricia ignored him.

“Daniel, don't let her manipulate you. She's trying to destroy everything your father built.””

I looked at Richard.

“Do you know what Victor Hale was doing before he left?””

Richard nodded slowly.

“He had access to confidential acquisition documents.””

“And did he leave voluntarily?””

Richard hesitated.

“No.””

The answer was enough.

I opened my handbag and removed a slim black folder.

Inside were printed copies of correspondence Renee had sent me earlier that afternoon.

I placed the folder in front of Richard.

“Then perhaps you should examine these.””

He opened it.

The first page contained a message from Victor Hale to an unknown recipient.

The second contained a draft ownership chart.

The third showed a proposed financing arrangement involving Northbridge.

Richard read the documents twice.

“Where did you get this?””

“From an encrypted archive attached to the original transfer submission.””

Daniel leaned over.

“What does it say?””

Richard didn't answer.

His eyes remained fixed on the final page.

Then he slowly turned toward Patricia.

“Did you know this company was planning to acquire Carter Dynamics' debt?””

Patricia's face went completely still.

Brielle whispered, “Mom?””

I folded my hands.

“Northbridge wasn't created to help Brielle manage my shares.””

Daniel looked at me.

“What was it created for?””

“To control the company after the acquisition.””

Richard stared at the ownership chart.

“That's not possible.””

I pointed to the highlighted section.

“Northbridge planned to purchase distressed debt held by three outside creditors. If those loans were called in simultaneously, Carter Dynamics would face a liquidity crisis.””

Daniel swallowed.

“And then?””

“Then the company would be forced to renegotiate its ownership structure.””

Richard finished the sentence.

“Or accept a takeover.””

I nodded.

Patricia suddenly grabbed her handbag.

“This conversation is over.””

“No,” I said.

“It isn't.””

She looked at me with open hostility.

“You have no right to interrogate me.””

I stood.

“I have every right to protect what belongs to me.””

She leaned closer.

“You think your money makes you powerful?””

I met her eyes.

“No. I think evidence does.””

For the first time, Patricia looked as though she might lose control completely.

Then Daniel spoke.

“Mom, did you work with Victor?””

Patricia looked at him.

Her silence was worse than an answer.

Daniel took a step backward.

“You did, didn't you?””

Before she could respond, Richard's phone rang.

He answered.

Listened.

Then his expression changed.

“What do you mean the acquisition documents have already been submitted?””

He looked at me.

“Mrs. Hayes, there's something you need to know.””

“What?””

“The board received a new proposal this afternoon.””

He swallowed.

“It was submitted by Northbridge Strategic Partners.””

May you like

And the proposed buyer had already secured commitments from three Carter Dynamics directors.

One of whom was sitting at our dinner table.
