Chapter 7: The Brother Who Had Been Hidden

Daniel arrived at the park carrying a worn backpack.

Emily recognized him immediately.

He looked nervous.

She stood beside a wooden bench, holding two takeaway coffees.

"Hi.""

"Hi.""

For a few seconds, neither knew what to say.

Then Daniel pointed toward the bench.

"Can we sit?""

Emily nodded.

He placed his backpack on the ground.

"I guess this is weird.""

Emily laughed softly.

"That's one way to describe it.""

Daniel looked down at his shoes.

"Aunt Denise told me everything.""

Emily's expression changed.

"Everything?""

"That you're my sister. That Robert is my father. That Mom—"

He stopped.

"Your mother?""

Emily nodded.

"Linda.""

Daniel looked across the park.

"She isn't my mother.""

Emily didn't know what to say.

Daniel continued.

"She helped raise me when I was little. But I always knew Aunt Denise was my mom.""

Emily looked at him.

"Did you know Dad was your father?""

Daniel shook his head.

"Not until last week.""

He reached into his backpack and pulled out a folded piece of paper.

It was a photocopy of an old hospital document.

"My birth certificate.""

Emily looked at it.

The father's name was blank.

But a handwritten note had been added to the bottom.

Paternity acknowledged by Robert Hayes.

Emily stared.

"What?""

Daniel nodded.

"Mom found it in an old folder. She said Linda had kept the original.""

Emily studied the handwriting.

It wasn't Robert's.

But the document carried a hospital stamp.

"Does Dad know?""

"Not yet.""

Emily looked at her brother.

"Why did you want to meet me?""

Daniel shrugged.

"Because I wanted to know what you were like.""

He hesitated.

"And because I wanted to ask you something.""

"What?""

"Did Dad know about me?""

Emily shook her head.

"He says he didn't.""

Daniel looked disappointed.

"I thought maybe he knew and just didn't want me.""

Emily felt something break inside her.

"No.""

She reached across the bench.

"He didn't know.""

Daniel stared at her hand before taking it.

"How do you know?""

"Because I've watched him my whole life. He gave up everything for me. He wouldn't have abandoned you if he'd known.""

Daniel's eyes filled.

"I wish I had known him.""

Emily squeezed his hand.

"Me too.""

They talked for nearly two hours.

Daniel told Emily about school, football, his favorite movies, and his plans to study computer science.

Emily told him about Westbridge, her research, and their father's terrible jokes.

At one point, Daniel laughed.

"Does he really tell the same jokes every year?""

"Every birthday.""

"That's embarrassing.""

"Extremely.""

They laughed together.

For the first time, the situation felt less like a scandal and more like the beginning of a relationship.

Then Daniel became serious.

"There's something else.""

Emily looked at him.

"What?""

He opened his backpack again.

This time, he pulled out a small black notebook.

"I found this in Mom's bedroom.""

Emily recognized the handwriting on the cover.

Linda's.

"What is it?""

"An account notebook.""

He opened it to a page marked with a yellow sticky note.

There were dates, amounts, and names.

Daniel pointed to a line.

"Look.""

Emily read it.

Westbridge tuition reserve — $12,000.

Below it:

Transferred to D. Carter household expenses.

And another entry:

Additional reserve — $8,500. Clothing, medical, and property.

Emily's stomach tightened.

"She was recording the money?""

Daniel nodded.

"There's more.""

He turned several pages.

Near the back was a handwritten note.

Robert must never see the original settlement documents.

Emily stared at it.

"Why would she write that?""

Daniel shook his head.

"I don't know.""

He turned another page.

There was a date.

Fourteen years earlier.

And a name.

Michael Bennett.

Emily frowned.

"That's our lawyer.""

Daniel looked at her.

"Your lawyer?""

"Our attorney.""

Daniel pointed at the note.

"Why would your lawyer's name be here?""

Emily felt a chill.

She took a photograph of the page.

Then she called Robert.

Robert arrived at the park twenty minutes later.

He sat beside the two teenagers.

Daniel looked nervous.

"Mr. Hayes—"

Robert interrupted gently.

"Call me Robert.""

Daniel nodded.

Robert studied his face.

"I've been wanting to meet you properly.""

Daniel swallowed.

"Me too.""

Robert reached out.

For a moment, Daniel hesitated.

Then he shook his hand.

Robert's fingers trembled.

He wanted to hug the boy.

But he didn't know whether Daniel would welcome it.

So he simply held his hand a little longer.

"I'm sorry," Robert whispered.

Daniel looked down.

"You didn't know.""

"Still.""

Daniel nodded.

Then Robert noticed the notebook.

Emily showed him the pages.

His expression hardened when he saw Michael's name.

"Where did you get this?""

"Mom's bedroom," Daniel replied.

"Does your mother know you have it?""

"No.""

Robert photographed the remaining pages.

Then he called Michael.

Michael agreed to meet them the following morning.

He arrived at his office carrying a thick file.

When Robert showed him the notebook, Michael's expression changed.

"Where did this come from?""

"Denise's house," Robert replied.

Michael examined the handwriting.

Then he opened his own file.

"There's something I need to explain.""

Robert leaned forward.

"Go ahead.""

"Fourteen years ago, I was contacted by Linda. She asked me to prepare documents relating to the insurance settlement.""

Robert frowned.

"You handled the settlement?""

"No. I was asked to review a separate family arrangement.""

"What arrangement?""

Michael hesitated.

"Linda said she wanted to establish an education trust for Emily.""

Robert looked at Emily.

"Was I informed?""

Michael shook his head.

"Not by me.""

"Why not?""

"Linda told me she had your consent.""

Robert stared.

"She lied.""

Michael nodded slowly.

"That's what I'm beginning to understand.""

He opened the file.

Inside was a copy of a document bearing Robert's name.

Robert leaned forward.

His signature appeared at the bottom.

But something was wrong.

He had never signed it.

"That's not my signature.""

Michael examined it.

"Are you certain?""

"Absolutely.""

Emily leaned closer.

The signature looked almost identical to her father's.

But the letter R was slightly different.

Robert pointed at it.

"I've signed factory inspection reports thousands of times. That's not how I write my name.""

Michael placed the document on the table.

"Then we need to have it examined.""

Robert stared at the paper.

"Who prepared this?""

Michael checked the file.

"Linda submitted it through another attorney's office.""

"Who?""

Michael read the name.

Then he stopped.

Emily looked at him.

"What's wrong?""

Michael closed the folder.

"There's something else.""

Robert leaned forward.

"What?""

"The document states that you voluntarily transferred management of the compensation settlement to Linda.""

Robert's jaw tightened.

"That never happened.""

Michael nodded.

"And there's a second document.""

He placed it on the table.

It was a declaration concerning Daniel.

The document claimed that Robert had acknowledged paternity and agreed that Linda would act as Daniel's financial guardian.

Robert stared.

"Why would I sign that?""

Michael looked at him.

"That's what we need to establish.""

Then he pointed to the date.

It was the same week Robert had been hospitalized after the factory accident.

Robert slowly leaned back.

He remembered that week.

He had been heavily medicated.

His right hand had been bandaged.

And Linda had visited him every day.

He had trusted her completely.

Michael gathered the documents.

"I recommend an independent forensic examination and a formal review of the financial records.""

Robert nodded.

Then he asked:

"Could these documents have been used to move the money without my knowledge?""

Michael didn't answer immediately.

Finally, he said:

"Yes.""

That evening, Robert returned home.

Linda was waiting in the living room.

On the coffee table sat a small suitcase.

She looked at him.

"Where have you been?""

Robert placed the copied documents on the table.

"Meeting Michael.""

Linda's face went pale.

"You shouldn't have involved him.""

"Why?""

"Because he doesn't know the whole story.""

Robert stared at her.

"Then tell me the whole story.""

Linda stood.

"You've already decided I'm guilty.""

"I'm asking you to explain your signature on these documents.""

She looked at the papers.

Then she whispered:

"Robert, I can explain.""

He waited.

She looked toward the stairs.

Then back at him.

"There's one thing you need to know about Daniel.""

Robert's expression hardened.

"What?""

Linda swallowed.

"Denise isn't his biological mother.""

Robert froze.

"What?""

Linda's eyes filled.

"She's his aunt.""

Robert stared at her.

"Then who gave birth to him?""

May you like

Linda's voice broke.

"Me.""
