Chapter 5: The Boy Nobody Was Allowed to Name

Robert didn't go to work the following morning.

For the first time in thirty years, he called his supervisor and said he needed a personal day.

He drove to Denise's address.

The journey took forty minutes.

He spent the entire time replaying her words.

She promised Daniel would never find out who his real father was.

Robert tried to make sense of it.

Denise was Linda's sister.

Daniel was Denise's son.

So why would Daniel have his surname?

And why had Linda spent fourteen years making sure he never learned the truth?

When Robert arrived, he sat in his truck for several minutes.

The house was modest.

A white fence surrounded the small front yard. A basketball rested near the porch, and a bicycle leaned against the garage.

A teenage boy was standing near the mailbox.

He wore a gray hoodie and black sneakers.

Robert recognized him immediately.

The jawline.

The eyebrows.

The small scar.

The boy looked up.

"Can I help you?""

Robert opened the truck door.

"Are you Daniel?""

The boy nodded.

"Yeah. Who are you?""

Robert struggled to answer.

"I'm Robert Hayes.""

Daniel frowned.

"Okay.""

Robert looked at the boy's face.

"I'm a friend of your aunt's.""

Daniel shrugged.

"She's inside.""

He opened the front door.

"Aunt Denise! Someone's here!""

Denise appeared in the hallway.

The moment she saw Robert, her face drained of color.

"Daniel, go upstairs.""

The boy looked confused.

"Why?""

"Please.""

"Did I do something?""

"No, sweetheart. Just go.""

Daniel glanced at Robert.

Then he walked upstairs.

Denise waited until the bedroom door closed.

"Robert, you shouldn't be here.""

"I need answers.""

She shook her head.

"You need to leave.""

"Who is Daniel's father?""

Denise's eyes filled.

"You already know.""

Robert stared at her.

"No. I don't.""

Denise gripped the doorway.

"Please don't make me say it.""

Robert felt his throat tighten.

"Is he mine?""

Denise started crying.

Then she nodded.

Robert sat down heavily.

For several seconds, he couldn't speak.

He had spent fourteen years believing he had one child.

One daughter.

One person whose future he had sacrificed everything to protect.

Now he was being told there was another child.

A son.

A boy who had grown up without knowing him.

Robert looked at Denise.

"How?""

Denise wiped her face.

"You and Linda had separated briefly. Do you remember?""

Robert shook his head.

"Fourteen years ago?""

"Yes.""

He remembered.

He and Linda had argued constantly after his injury.

For several weeks, he had slept in the spare bedroom.

One night, after a particularly bitter argument, he had stayed with a coworker.

But he had never separated from Linda officially.

"What does that have to do with Daniel?""

Denise lowered her voice.

"Linda and I were both going through difficult times. She told me you were considering leaving her. She said you had been seeing someone else.""

Robert stared.

"I never cheated on Linda.""

"I know that now.""

"What do you mean?""

Denise looked toward the stairs.

"Linda told me you were planning to abandon Emily. She said she needed someone who understood what she was going through.""

Robert felt a cold wave move through his chest.

"Denise, tell me exactly what happened.""

She sat opposite him.

"Linda came to stay with me for several days after your accident. We were talking about our marriages. I had just found out I was pregnant, and I was terrified.""

Robert remembered the hospital photograph.

"Then what?""

"Linda told me you had received a large insurance payment. She said you were going to use it to leave her.""

Robert's hands tightened.

"That never happened.""

"I know.""

"How much money did she give you?""

Denise looked down.

"At first, nothing. Then, after Daniel was born, she started helping me.""

"With my insurance money?""

Denise nodded.

Robert closed his eyes.

"Did she tell you it was mine?""

"She said it was family money.""

"Did you know she was telling me the baby had died?""

Denise began sobbing.

"Yes.""

Robert stood.

"You let me believe that?""

"I was scared.""

"Of what?""

Denise looked at him.

"Of losing Daniel.""

Robert stared at her.

"He's your son.""

"He's my son biologically. But Linda raised him for the first few months.""

Robert froze.

"What?""

Denise covered her mouth.

Then she continued.

"After he was born, I was struggling. Linda offered to help. She took him for weekends, then weeks. She told me she wanted to give him a stable environment.""

Robert slowly sat down again.

"Was he ever living with us?""

Denise nodded.

"For almost three months.""

Robert felt the room tilt.

Three months.

He remembered those months.

Linda had told him she was helping Denise recover from childbirth.

He had returned from the factory every evening to find his wife exhausted.

Sometimes there had been baby bottles in the kitchen.

Sometimes a small blanket on the couch.

He had assumed Denise had been visiting.

He had never imagined the child was in their home.

"Did Emily see him?""

Denise nodded.

"She was ten. She thought he was her cousin.""

Robert stared at the floor.

His daughter had grown up in the same house as her baby brother.

And nobody had told her.

A noise came from the stairs.

Daniel appeared at the top step.

"Mom?""

Denise quickly wiped her face.

"What is it, sweetheart?""

"Why is that man crying?""

Robert hadn't realized tears were running down his cheeks.

Daniel looked at him with curiosity.

"Are you okay?""

Robert tried to smile.

"I'm fine.""

Daniel came downstairs.

He studied Robert's face.

"You look familiar.""

Robert swallowed.

"Do I?""

"Yeah. Aunt Denise has an old photograph of you somewhere.""

Denise looked horrified.

"Daniel, go back upstairs.""

But the boy ignored her.

He pulled a photograph from the bookshelf.

It showed Robert, Linda, Emily, and Denise at a summer barbecue fourteen years earlier.

Daniel pointed at Robert.

"That's you.""

Robert nodded.

"Yes.""

Daniel examined the photograph.

Then he pointed at the little girl sitting on Robert's shoulders.

"Who's that?""

"Emily. My daughter.""

Daniel smiled.

"She's my cousin.""

Robert looked at him.

"Yes.""

Daniel returned the photograph to the shelf.

Then he asked a question that nearly broke Robert's heart.

"Why don't I ever see her anymore?""

Robert couldn't answer.

That afternoon, Robert returned home.

Linda was in the kitchen preparing dinner.

She looked up when he entered.

"Where have you been?""

"With Denise.""

The knife in her hand stopped moving.

"You went there?""

"Yes.""

Linda placed the knife on the counter.

"What did she tell you?""

"Everything.""

She shook her head.

"She had no right.""

Robert stared at her.

"He's my son.""

Linda turned away.

"Robert, please.""

"He's fourteen years old. He has my name. He has my face. He lives forty minutes away, and I didn't know he existed.""

Linda began crying.

"I was trying to protect everyone.""

"Protect whom?""

"You!""

Robert laughed bitterly.

"From what? Being a father?""

Linda covered her face.

"Denise was going to lose him. She was struggling. I helped her.""

"Then why did you lie?""

"Because I knew you'd never accept it.""

"Accept what?""

Linda looked at him.

"That Daniel was yours.""

Robert went completely still.

"What did you just say?""

She immediately realized what she had admitted.

"Robert—"

"Why would I not accept my own son?""

Linda sat down.

For the first time, she seemed genuinely frightened.

"Because you loved Emily too much.""

Robert stared at her.

He couldn't believe what he was hearing.

"You thought I'd love my daughter less if I knew I had a son?""

Linda shook her head.

"You were always working for her. Everything was for her. Every dollar, every decision. Denise and I thought Daniel deserved something, too.""

Robert's voice was quiet.

"So you stole from Emily to give to Daniel?""

"I didn't steal anything.""

"Thirty-eight thousand dollars.""

"He's family!""

"Emily is family!""

Linda stood abruptly.

"You have no idea what I've done for this family!""

Robert looked at her.

"Then tell me.""

She opened her mouth.

But before she could speak, his phone rang.

It was Emily.

He answered.

"Sweetheart?""

"Dad, are you home?""

"Yes.""

"Mom said something strange when I called her.""

Robert glanced at Linda.

"What did she say?""

Emily hesitated.

"She told me I shouldn't come home this weekend.""

Robert's stomach tightened.

"Why?""

"She said there are things I don't understand. Then she said you were trying to destroy our family.""

Robert closed his eyes.

"Emily, listen to me. I need you to stay calm.""

"Dad, what's happening?""

He looked at Linda.

Then he made a decision.

"Sweetheart, I need to tell you something. But I want to do it in person.""

Emily's voice trembled.

"Is someone sick?""

"No.""

"Are you hurt?""

"No, sweetheart.""

"Then what is it?""

Robert looked at the old family photograph on the shelf.

At the little girl sitting on his shoulders.

At the woman who had hidden an entire child from them.

And at the life he thought he understood.

"Emily," he whispered, "you have a brother.""

Silence.

Then she asked:

"What?""

"His name is Daniel.""

Another silence.

"How old is he?""

"Fourteen.""

Emily's breathing changed.

"Dad, how can I have a fourteen-year-old brother?""

Robert looked at Linda.

"That's what I'm trying to understand.""

Emily began crying.

"Did you know about him?""

"No.""

"Does Mom know?""

Robert closed his eyes.

"Yes.""

The call went quiet.

Then Emily whispered something that made his heart ache.

"Did she know all this time?""

Robert couldn't bring himself to lie.

"Yes, sweetheart.""

An hour later, Emily arrived at the house.

She walked into the kitchen carrying a small backpack.

Her eyes were red.

Linda stood near the counter.

"Emily, darling—"

"Don't.""

Linda froze.

Emily looked at her father.

"Is it true?""

Robert nodded.

"Yes.""

"Did Mom know?""

"Yes.""

Emily turned toward Linda.

"Why?""

Linda reached for her daughter's hand.

"Please sit down.""

"No. I want an answer.""

Linda's lips trembled.

"Things were complicated.""

Emily laughed through her tears.

"That's what you always say when you don't want to tell the truth.""

Robert placed a hand on her shoulder.

"Sweetheart...""

Emily stepped away.

"Fourteen years? You knew about him for fourteen years?""

Linda began crying.

"I was trying to protect you.""

"From what?""

Linda couldn't answer.

Emily looked at the family photographs on the wall.

There was one from her tenth birthday.

Another from a school award ceremony.

One from Christmas.

And one from the summer barbecue.

She walked toward the last photograph.

Then she pointed at the baby blanket visible on the couch in the background.

"Was he there?""

Linda nodded.

Emily's voice broke.

"I remember that blanket.""

Robert looked at her.

"You do?""

Emily nodded slowly.

"I remember Mom telling me Aunt Denise had brought a baby over. I remember asking if I could hold him.""

She turned toward her mother.

"You told me I was too young.""

Linda covered her mouth.

Emily looked down at the photograph.

Then she asked the question nobody in the room was prepared to answer.

"Did you ever let me hold my own brother?""

Linda began sobbing.

But Emily wasn't finished.

She pulled a folded document from her backpack.

It was an email printout from the university's financial aid office.

"Dad, I was checking my scholarship records because I thought something was wrong with my tuition account.""

Robert frowned.

"What did you find?""

Emily handed him the paper.

At the bottom was a note regarding a financial aid adjustment made during her second year.

The university had received an external payment.

The donor name was partially visible.

*D. Hayes Family Education Trust.*

Robert looked up.

"What is this?""

Emily swallowed.

"I called the financial aid office. They said someone had been making payments toward my tuition through a private education trust.""

Linda went pale.

Emily turned toward her.

"Mom, do you know who set it up?""

Linda didn't answer.

Emily looked back at her father.

"There's something else.""

She pulled another sheet from the envelope.

"This is the name of the person who created the trust.""

Robert read it.

His eyes widened.

Because the trust had been established fourteen years earlier.

And the person who had funded it wasn't Linda.

It wasn't Denise.

It wasn't Robert.

It was someone whose name neither of them had expected to see.

*Emily Hayes.*

But Emily had been ten years old.

And she had never had a bank account of her own.

So who had used her name to create the trust?

And why had the money supposedly intended for her education been sent somewhere else?

Linda took one step backward.

For the first time, she looked genuinely terrified.

Because the secret Robert had just discovered was only the beginning.

And this time, the evidence had Emily's name written all over it.
