Chapter 8: The Executive Who Never Left
Security locked down the executive floor.
Nobody could leave without being identified.
The investigator began checking access records while Richard contacted the company's cybersecurity team.
I stood near the conference room window.
Outside, the city was glowing beneath the evening lights.
Inside, Sterling had become a maze of suspicion.
"Any results?"" I asked.
Richard looked at his phone.
"Security has identified three active sessions.""
"Names?""
"Two belong to the IT department.""
"And the third?""
He hesitated.
"Angela Brooks.""
I frowned.
"She was suspended.""
"Her account should have been disabled.""
The investigator looked up.
"Someone reactivated it.""
I turned toward him.
"Can you trace the device?""
"Yes. Give me a few minutes.""
Denise sat quietly in the corner.
She had stopped crying.
Now she looked frightened.
I approached her.
"Did Harold ever tell you Angela was still involved?""
She shook her head.
"No.""
"Did Derek?""
"No.""
"Then why would she be using the network?""
Denise stared at her hands.
"I think I know.""
I waited.
"Angela had a key to the archive room.""
Richard frowned.
"Why?""
"She was responsible for the original financial records.""
The investigator stood.
"Where is the archive room?""
Richard pointed toward the corridor.
"Two floors below us.""
The security director arrived.
"We've got a problem.""
"What?""
"Someone entered the archive room eleven minutes ago.""
Richard grabbed his coat.
"Who?""
The security director looked at his tablet.
"Angela Brooks.""
We hurried downstairs.
Two guards were standing outside the archive room.
The door was locked.
The security director knocked.
"Angela? Open the door.""
No answer.
He knocked again.
"Angela, this is security. Open the door immediately.""
A metallic sound came from inside.
Then silence.
The guards moved into position.
The security director used his master key.
The door opened.
Angela stood beside a filing cabinet.
A laptop was open on the table.
Several documents were scattered across the floor.
She turned toward us.
"Richard.""
He stared at her.
"What are you doing?""
She quickly closed the laptop.
"Nothing.""
The investigator stepped forward.
"Please move away from the computer.""
Angela shook her head.
"I have authorization.""
"From whom?""
She hesitated.
Then looked toward me.
"Mr. Carter, I can explain.""
I walked closer.
"Then explain.""
She glanced at Denise.
Then back at me.
"Harold told me the board had approved a restructuring.""
"That's not what I asked.""
She swallowed.
"I was retrieving documents.""
"Which documents?""
"The original payment records.""
"Why?""
"Because they're confidential.""
The investigator opened the laptop.
Angela stepped forward.
"Don't touch that.""
The security director moved between them.
"Step back.""
Angela's voice rose.
"Those are company records. You can't just seize them.""
The investigator turned the screen toward me.
A file was open.
Its title was:
*CARTER TRUST — INVALIDATION SUPPORTING EVIDENCE.*
I stared at it.
"What is this?""
Angela's face went white.
She said nothing.
The investigator scrolled.
There were several medical statements, handwritten notes, and scanned documents.
One document claimed that my father had suffered severe cognitive impairment two years before his death.
Another claimed that he had privately expressed a desire to transfer control of Sterling to Harold.
I recognized the signature at the bottom.
My father's.
But the handwriting was wrong.
I looked at Angela.
"Where did you get these?""
She began trembling.
"Harold gave them to me.""
"Are they genuine?""
"I don't know.""
The investigator examined the files.
"These appear to be fabricated.""
Angela sank into a chair.
"I didn't create them.""
"Who did?""
She looked at the laptop.
Then whispered.
"Edward.""
Richard shook his head.
"Edward has already surrendered his records.""
Angela looked up.
"Not all of them.""
I stepped closer.
"What do you mean?""
She swallowed.
"Edward kept copies of everything. Harold told me to retrieve them before the investigation found them.""
I looked at Richard.
"Where?""
Angela pointed toward a locked cabinet.
The security director opened it.
Inside were several storage devices and a sealed folder.
The investigator examined the contents.
One document was a private agreement between Edward and Harold.
It stated that Edward would receive a substantial payment after the Carter Trust was removed.
Another document contained a list of proposed board replacements.
At the top was Harold Bennett.
Beneath him was Denise Carter.
I looked at her.
She shook her head.
"I didn't know about this.""
I believed she hadn't seen that document.
But it didn't change what she had done.
The investigator continued scrolling.
Then he stopped.
"Mr. Carter, I think you should see this.""
The screen showed an email dated four years earlier.
It had been sent from Harold to Edward.
The subject line was:
*DANIEL CARTER — FINAL TRUST AMENDMENT.*
I opened it.
The email contained a message.
If Daniel refuses to change the agreement, we need another way to make the amendment ineffective.
Below it was Edward's reply.
I can prepare an alternative document. But the original will remain valid.
Harold's response was chilling.
Then make sure nobody can find the original.
I stared at the screen.
"How long has this been happening?""
The investigator shook his head.
"We need to examine the full archive.""
Richard looked at Angela.
"Did you know my name was being used in the fraudulent payments?""
She began crying.
"Yes.""
"Why?""
"Harold said he would destroy my career if I refused.""
Richard's voice became cold.
"Then you should have reported him.""
"I was afraid.""
I looked at her.
"So was Peter.""
Angela lowered her head.
"Yes.""
The security director escorted her from the room.
The investigator secured the laptop and documents.
By midnight, the company had enough evidence to refer the matter to federal authorities.
But there was still one person I needed to speak with.
Edward Walsh.
I called him.
He answered immediately.
"Marcus.""
"We found the documents.""
Silence.
"Which documents?""
"The fabricated medical statements. The agreement with Harold. The emails.""
Edward sighed.
"I was afraid this would happen.""
"Why did you do it?""
His voice cracked.
"Harold threatened my son.""
"You told me that already.""
"He also threatened to expose my son's financial problems to his employer. My son had a family. Children. I panicked.""
"You helped him fabricate evidence against my father.""
"I know.""
"You tried to take away my inheritance.""
"I know.""
I closed my eyes.
"Edward, you knew my father.""
"I did.""
"You sat at his table. You ate his food. You celebrated his successes.""
Edward began crying.
"I know, Marcus.""
I ended the call.
For the first time, I understood that some betrayals didn't happen because people hated you.
They happened because they loved something else more than they loved the truth.
And that was sometimes harder to forgive.
The next morning, the board held an emergency session.
Angela was formally dismissed.
Edward's legal files were transferred to independent investigators.
Harold's attempt to challenge the trust was withdrawn after the fraudulent evidence was exposed.
The original shareholders' agreement was secured.
And the Carter Family Trust remained intact.
But before the meeting ended, Margaret announced something unexpected.
"The board has received a resignation letter.""
I looked up.
"From whom?""
Margaret turned the document around.
Richard Coleman.
I stared at him.
"Richard?""
He nodded.
"I've spent thirty years with Sterling. I've seen this company grow. I've also made mistakes by trusting people I shouldn't have trusted.""
"You didn't authorize those payments.""
"No. But I ignored warning signs because I didn't want to believe someone inside the company was doing this.""
He stood.
"I think it's time for a new generation of leadership.""
I looked at him.
"Are you sure?""
He smiled sadly.
"Your father once told me that a good leader knows when to step aside.""
I shook his hand.
"Thank you for everything.""
Richard smiled.
"Just promise me you'll keep the company honest.""
"I will.""
He left the room.
And as the door closed, Margaret looked toward me.
"Marcus, the board has a recommendation.""
I sat down.
"What is it?""
"Your appointment as chairman has been approved unanimously.""
I nodded.
But something inside me remained unsettled.
Because the company had survived.
My father's legacy was protected.
May you like
And yet, the woman I had once promised to grow old with was still somewhere in the middle of the wreckage.
I wondered what would happen when she finally understood that no amount of money could purchase the life we had lost.
