Chapter 7: The Price of Loyalty

I didn't speak for several seconds.

Richard stood across from me, holding his phone.

His face was expressionless.

But his eyes had changed.

"Edward said my name?"" he asked.

I nodded.

"What exactly did he say?""

I put the call on speaker.

"Edward, repeat what you just told me.""

A brief silence followed.

Then Edward spoke.

"Your father left a handwritten record of payments connected to Harold Bennett. Denise Carter received two hundred and fifty thousand dollars. Richard Coleman received a payment of seventy-five thousand.""

Richard shook his head.

"That's a lie.""

Edward continued.

"The payment was made through a consulting company registered under your brother's name.""

Richard stepped toward the table.

"I never received seventy-five thousand dollars.""

I looked at him.

"Then we need to establish where it went.""

Edward spoke again.

"Your father suspected the payment was intended to compromise Richard's position.""

Richard's face reddened.

"Daniel knew about this?""

"Yes.""

"Why didn't he tell me?""

"Because he wanted to give you an opportunity to explain.""

Richard stared at the phone.

Then he looked at me.

"Marcus, I swear I didn't take that money.""

I believed him.

At least, I wanted to.

Richard had been loyal to my father for decades. He had helped Sterling expand into new markets. He had defended employees when executives wanted to cut costs.

But the list was evidence.

And evidence needed to be examined.

"Richard, I need your financial records.""

He nodded immediately.

"Of course.""

"No exceptions.""

"Understood.""

I ended the call.

Richard sat down heavily.

"Do you think I betrayed Daniel?""

I looked at him.

"I think someone used your name. Whether you knew about it is something we need to establish.""

He nodded.

"That's fair.""

At four that afternoon, Edward arrived at the headquarters with the second envelope.

He looked nervous.

He placed it on my desk.

"The safe hasn't been opened since your father's death.""

I checked the seal.

It was intact.

Inside were three items.

The first was the original shareholders' agreement.

The second was a medical report confirming my father's mental capacity.

The third was a small digital recorder.

I turned it over.

My father's initials were engraved on the back.

"Does it work?"" I asked.

Edward nodded.

"I tested it.""

I pressed play.

At first, there was static.

Then my father's voice filled the office.

"Harold, I've known you too long to pretend I don't understand what you're trying to do.""

Harold answered.

"Daniel, this company needs new leadership.""

"It has leadership.""

"It has your son.""

"My son has the right to decide what kind of life he wants.""

"He's not qualified to run a company like this.""

My father laughed softly.

"Neither was I when I opened my first restaurant.""

There was a pause.

Then Harold spoke again.

"You're protecting him because he's your son.""

"No. I'm protecting him because the trust belongs to the employees, the shareholders, and the people who built this company.""

Harold's voice became colder.

"You're making a mistake.""

My father replied quietly.

"The mistake was trusting you with my friendship.""

The recording ended.

I sat completely still.

Edward lowered his head.

"Your father wanted this released only if the trust was challenged.""

I looked at him.

"Why did you wait so long?""

He swallowed.

"Because Harold threatened my family. He said he could destroy my son's future.""

"Edward, my father trusted you.""

"I know.""

"And you betrayed him.""

Edward's eyes filled with tears.

"Yes.""

For the first time, he didn't try to defend himself.

He simply sat there.

A few minutes later, Richard entered with a document.

"Marcus, the financial team has traced the seventy-five thousand dollars.""

I looked up.

"Where did it go?""

"Into a company account controlled by Derek Mitchell.""

I frowned.

"Then how did Richard's name get involved?""

Richard pointed to the transaction record.

"Harold used my employee identification number to authorize a transfer. But the account was opened without my knowledge.""

I examined the documents.

The authorization had been created while Richard was attending a conference in Chicago.

There was also a digital access log.

The transaction had originated from an executive terminal inside Sterling headquarters.

Richard looked at Edward.

"Who had access to that terminal?""

Edward answered quietly.

"Angela Brooks.""

The corporate treasurer.

The woman who had been promised the CFO position.

I looked at Richard.

"Can you prove it?""

"Security has the access records.""

"Then get them.""

Richard left.

I looked at Edward.

"There's one more thing I want to know.""

"Yes?""

"Why did my father keep all this information instead of confronting Harold?""

Edward looked toward the window.

"Because he was afraid Harold would retaliate against the employees.""

I frowned.

"How?""

"Harold had connections with several major suppliers. He threatened to withdraw contracts and force layoffs if Daniel challenged him publicly.""

I looked down at the recorder.

My father had been protecting people.

Even while knowing someone he trusted was preparing to destroy everything.

I thought about the way Denise had treated me at dinner.

The humiliation.

The folding table.

The plastic chair.

And I realized that the betrayal wasn't simply about money.

It was about a belief that power gave certain people permission to decide who mattered.

That belief had spread through Sterling.

And it needed to end.

At seven thirty that evening, Denise arrived at my office.

She looked exhausted.

"Marcus, I need to talk to you.""

I closed the folder.

"Go ahead.""

She sat down.

"Harold called me.""

"What did he say?""

"He told me Edward had given you the recording.""

I nodded.

"He did.""

She swallowed.

"Then you know about the money.""

"Yes.""

She looked at the floor.

"I can explain.""

"Please do.""

She took a deep breath.

"Harold transferred the money to Derek. He said it was compensation for helping with the restructuring.""

"Did you receive any of it?""

"No.""

"Did you know about the transfer?""

"Yes.""

I looked at her.

"Then why did you tell me the money was for your promotion?""

"Because I didn't want you to know how much I had been involved.""

I remained silent.

She began crying.

"I knew the plan was wrong. I knew the property documents weren't legitimate. But I thought Harold would protect me.""

"Why?""

"Because he promised me a future.""

I shook my head.

"Denise, you had a future. You threw it away because someone offered you a bigger title.""

She covered her face.

Then she reached into her handbag.

"I brought something else.""

She handed me a folded document.

It was a bank transfer confirmation.

The recipient account belonged to Derek.

But the sender wasn't Harold.

It was a company registered under Richard's brother's name.

I looked up.

"Where did you get this?""

"Harold sent it to me yesterday. He wanted me to keep quiet.""

"Why would he send you evidence against Richard?""

She shook her head.

"Because he said Richard would be blamed if the investigation continued.""

I studied the document.

Something was wrong.

The account number matched a previous transaction, but the company name had changed.

I called Richard immediately.

He answered on the second ring.

"Marcus?""

"I need you in my office.""

"What's happened?""

"Bring the financial investigator.""

Twenty minutes later, Richard arrived with the investigator.

They examined the transfer confirmation.

The investigator frowned.

"This document has been altered.""

I looked at Denise.

"What?""

She shook her head.

"I didn't alter it.""

The investigator pointed to the timestamp.

"The original transaction was legitimate, but the sender's details have been replaced.""

Richard looked furious.

"Someone is trying to frame me.""

I turned toward Denise.

"Where did you get this?""

"From Harold.""

"Did he send it electronically?""

"Yes.""

"Do you still have the original message?""

She nodded.

I held out my hand.

"Show us.""

She opened her phone.

The message contained an attachment.

The investigator checked the file metadata.

Then his expression changed.

"Mr. Carter, this document was modified using an account registered to DCM Consulting.""

I looked at Denise.

"Your brother?""

She shook her head.

"I don't know.""

The investigator examined the sender details again.

Then he looked up.

"There's another problem.""

"What?""

"The person who modified the document was logged into Sterling's internal network.""

Richard went pale.

"That means someone still has access.""

May you like

The investigator nodded.

"And they're currently inside the building.""
