Chapter 5: The Million-Dollar Lie

The old studio seemed to shrink around them.

Emma stood with Lily behind her.

Richard stared at Ethan as though he were looking at a ghost.

Daniel moved subtly toward the stairs.

Victoria noticed.

“Don't,” she said.

Daniel stopped.

Victoria descended slowly.

Her heels clicked against the wooden steps.

Ethan followed.

He looked nothing like the powerful financial executive from the old photograph.

His suit was wrinkled.

His face was thinner.

There was a scar near his eyebrow.

And his eyes looked exhausted.

Richard spoke first.

“You disappeared.””

Ethan gave a bitter smile.

“You told everyone I stole twelve million dollars.””

“I believed you were responsible.””

“You knew I wasn't.””

Richard shook his head.

“I knew the accounts were under your control.””

“And you knew who ordered the transfers.””

Silence.

Emma looked at Richard.

“You knew?””

Richard didn't answer.

Victoria smiled.

“There it is.””

Emma turned toward her.

“What?””

“The part your mother never told you.””

Emma's voice hardened.

“Stop speaking about my mother like you knew her.””

Victoria laughed softly.

“I knew her better than you think.””

“You stole her dance.””

“No.””

Victoria's eyes flashed.

“She gave me the dance.””

“You stole the credit.””

Victoria looked toward Lily.

“Your grandmother knew how the world worked. She understood that talented people don't always get rewarded.””

Emma shook her head.

“My mother didn't create The Promise for you.””

Victoria's expression changed.

“She created it because she knew I could make it famous.””

“No.””

“She needed money.””

Emma stared at her.

“For the children?””

Victoria shrugged.

“For herself.””

Emma stepped forward.

“Don't lie.””

Victoria smiled.

“You want the truth? Fine.””

She pointed toward the notebook.

“Your mother wasn't trying to save the foundation.””

“She was trying to control it.””

Richard interrupted.

“That's enough.””

Victoria turned.

“Why? You lied too.””

Richard's face tightened.

“Victoria.””

“You told Clara you'd protect her.””

Richard looked down.

“She knew too much.””

Emma's voice became cold.

“What did she know?””

Ethan answered.

“The money wasn't stolen.””

Emma looked at him.

“Then where did it go?””

Ethan stepped into the center of the studio.

“I moved it.””

Victoria smiled.

Emma's stomach dropped.

“You?””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

Ethan looked at Victoria.

“Because she ordered me to.””

Victoria's smile disappeared.

“That isn't true.””

Ethan laughed.

“You always were good at that.””

Richard stared at his daughter.

“You ordered the transfers?””

Victoria's silence was answer enough.

Emma felt the pieces beginning to connect.

“You stole twelve million dollars from your own charity.””

Victoria shook her head.

“No.””

“You moved it through shell companies.””

“I invested it.””

“For what?””

Victoria looked at the notebook.

“For the Ashford Group.””

Emma's eyes widened.

Victoria's voice remained calm.

“The charity was losing money. I used the foundation's reserves to protect the company.””

“That money belonged to children.””

“It belonged to the foundation.””

“You stole it.””

Victoria's face hardened.

“I saved this family.””

Ethan shook his head.

“You saved yourself.””

Victoria turned toward him.

“You should be grateful.””

“For what?””

“For keeping you alive.””

The room fell silent.

Emma looked at Ethan.

“What does that mean?””

Ethan's face went pale.

Victoria stepped closer.

“You remember what happened after Clara found out.””

Ethan swallowed.

“Yes.””

“You remember the accident.””

Emma's heart stopped.

“What accident?””

Ethan looked at her.

“Your mother's car.””

Emma felt dizzy.

“My mother was in an accident.””

Ethan nodded.

“It wasn't an accident.””

Richard closed his eyes.

Emma stared at him.

“You knew?””

Richard whispered:

“I knew something was wrong.””

“You knew my mother was targeted?””

“I suspected.””

Emma's voice broke.

“And you did nothing?””

Richard looked devastated.

“I was trying to find proof.””

Victoria snapped, “You were trying to protect your company.””

Richard turned on her.

“You threatened me too.””

Victoria laughed.

“And you still stayed silent.””

Emma stepped toward Victoria.

“You hurt my mother.””

Victoria stared at her.

“I didn't touch Clara.””

Ethan said quietly:

“But you ordered someone to scare her.””

Victoria looked at him.

“You have no proof.””

Ethan pointed at the notebook.

“She kept everything.””

Victoria's eyes went to the pages.

Then she smiled.

“Not everything.””

She reached into her purse.

Emma stiffened.

Victoria pulled out a lighter.

She flicked it.

A small flame appeared.

“What are you doing?””

Emma moved forward.

Victoria held the lighter above the notebook.

“This is over.””

Daniel stepped toward her.

“Victoria, don't.””

She smiled.

“You should have listened to your mother, Emma.””

Emma froze.

“What did you say?””

Victoria's voice softened.

“She told you not to trust this family.””

The flame touched the corner of the notebook.

Paper caught fire.

Emma screamed.

“Stop!””

She lunged.

Ethan grabbed Victoria's wrist.

The lighter fell.

Daniel kicked it across the floor.

Emma snatched the notebook.

Smoke curled from its edge.

She dropped to her knees and pressed the burning page against the wooden floor until the flame died.

Victoria stared at her.

Then something unexpected happened.

Lily stepped forward.

She was crying.

But her voice was steady.

“You're scared.””

Victoria looked at her.

“What?””

“You're scared of Grandma.””

Victoria's expression hardened.

“You don't know anything about me.””

Lily touched the silver necklace.

“She said you would be.””

Victoria stared at the necklace.

Her face suddenly changed.

“Where did you get that?””

“Grandma gave it to me.””

Victoria stepped closer.

“Take it off.””

Emma immediately pulled Lily behind her.

“Don't touch her.””

Victoria's eyes remained fixed on the necklace.

“You have no idea what that is.””

Emma looked down.

The small silver pendant had always seemed ordinary.

Until Lily pressed the center.

A tiny click sounded.

The pendant opened.

Inside was a microscopic memory card.

Emma stared.

Daniel whispered:

“That's impossible.””

Lily looked confused.

“Grandma said it was my lucky necklace.””

Ethan stepped forward.

“Clara hid evidence inside it.””

Victoria went completely still.

Richard looked at his daughter.

“You knew about the necklace?””

Victoria didn't answer.

Emma removed the memory card.

Daniel took out a small adapter from his phone case.

They inserted it.

A video appeared.

The screen showed Clara.

Alive.

Sitting at the old studio piano.

Emma's breath caught.

Her mother looked directly into the camera.

“If you're watching this, then Lily is old enough.””

Emma covered her mouth.

Clara continued.

“Emma, I'm sorry I couldn't tell you everything.””

The recording showed Clara placing a folder on the piano.

“Victoria will tell you she won.””

Clara smiled sadly.

“She didn't.””

Victoria whispered:

“Turn it off.””

Nobody moved.

Clara continued.

“The dance was only the beginning.””

She looked toward the camera.

“The real secret is the money.””

Emma leaned closer.

Clara's expression became serious.

“I discovered where the twelve million dollars went.””

Ethan closed his eyes.

Clara spoke the final words slowly.

“And Victoria wasn't the person who ordered the transfers.””

Emma froze.

Victoria looked almost relieved.

Then Clara said:

“She was following someone else's orders.””

The video ended.

Silence.

Emma stared at the blank screen.

“Whose orders?””

Richard's face had gone completely white.

Victoria looked at him.

And for the first time that night, she looked genuinely terrified.

Because someone behind them spoke.

A man's voice.

Calm.

Cold.

“You finally found out.””

Emma turned.

A figure stood in the doorway.

Richard whispered one name.

May you like

“Jonathan.””

And Victoria dropped her purse.
