Chapter 4: The Locked Room

The Ashford Foundation archive was hidden beneath the original Ashford headquarters, three blocks from the hotel.

Richard drove.

Emma sat in the back with Lily.

Daniel rode beside them.

Nobody spoke for the first five minutes.

Finally, Lily broke the silence.

“Why would Grandma put money in my name?””

Richard looked at her through the rearview mirror.

“She probably didn't.””

“But the paper says my name.””

“It does.””

“Then whose money was it?””

Richard's hands tightened around the steering wheel.

“That is what we're going to find out.””

Emma watched the city lights slide across the window.

She kept thinking about her mother's letter.

Do not let Victoria frighten you.

But Clara had known her daughter well.

She knew fear.

She knew what Victoria was capable of.

And apparently, she knew that one day Lily would become the person who could expose it.

The car stopped beneath an old brick building.

Richard led them through a private entrance.

They descended two flights of stairs.

At the bottom was a steel door.

No sign.

No handle.

Only a keypad.

Richard entered a code.

The light turned red.

He frowned.

“That should work.””

Daniel looked at the key in Emma's hand.

“Try the key.””

Emma inserted it.

There was a click.

The steel door opened.

Inside, shelves covered every wall.

Boxes.

Files.

Old photographs.

Hard drives.

Documents dating back decades.

Lily looked around.

“Grandma worked here?””

Richard shook his head.

“No.””

He looked at Emma.

“She was never an employee.””

“Then why did she have access?””

Richard didn't answer.

Daniel did.

“Because Clara was one of the foundation's original architects.””

Emma turned.

“What?””

Daniel nodded.

“She helped create the children's dance initiative.””

Richard walked toward a locked cabinet.

“Your mother designed the entire program.””

He opened it.

Inside were folders labeled with dates.

Emma noticed one from 2016.

She pulled it out.

The first page contained a photograph.

Clara.

Victoria.

And a third person.

A man Emma didn't recognize.

She pointed.

“Who is he?””

Richard's face tightened.

“Ethan Vale.””

Daniel looked at him.

“You kept his name out of everything.””

“I was trying to protect the foundation.””

“From him?””

“From what he knew.””

Emma stepped between them.

“Someone please tell me what is happening.””

Richard sighed.

“Ethan was our chief financial officer.””

“And?””

“He discovered money was disappearing.””

Emma's stomach tightened.

“How much?””

“Almost twelve million dollars.””

Lily's eyes widened.

“Twelve million?””

Richard nodded.

“The money was supposed to fund dance programs.””

Emma looked at the folders.

“Who took it?””

Richard didn't answer.

Daniel walked to another cabinet.

“That's what Clara discovered.””

He opened a drawer.

Inside were dozens of handwritten notes.

Emma recognized the handwriting immediately.

Her mother.

She grabbed one.

Victoria knows about the transfers.

Emma read the next.

She says I should stay quiet.

Another.

Ethan says the money is being moved through shell companies.

Another.

If I go public, Lily will be targeted.

Emma looked up.

“Lily?””

Daniel nodded.

“Your mother was terrified someone would use your daughter to control you.””

Emma looked at Lily.

The little girl stood quietly beside a shelf, staring at a framed photograph.

“Mom.””

Emma walked over.

Lily pointed.

It was a photograph of Clara holding baby Lily.

But in the background stood Victoria.

Emma frowned.

“Why is Victoria there?””

Daniel took the photograph.

He looked at the back.

There was writing.

Emma read it.

July 14, 2018. Lily's first rehearsal.

She looked at Daniel.

“My mother told me Lily didn't start dancing until she was five.””

Daniel's face changed.

“She lied.””

Emma felt another shock.

“What?””

“She wanted Victoria to believe Lily didn't have the original choreography.””

Emma stared at him.

“But Lily was six months old.””

“Exactly.””

Daniel pulled another folder from the cabinet.

Inside were video stills.

A baby Lily.

Clara dancing slowly in front of her.

Lily's tiny hands moving.

Emma's eyes filled with tears.

Her mother had recorded it.

Not as a dance lesson.

As proof.

At the bottom of the folder was a note.

The first movement belongs to Lily.

Emma whispered, “Why?””

Daniel answered.

“Because Victoria claimed she created the choreography.””

Richard looked toward the locked cabinet.

“There is still one file missing.””

Emma turned.

“What file?””

“The financial ledger.””

“Why is it important?””

Richard hesitated.

“Because it proves where the twelve million went.””

Daniel's expression was grim.

“And Clara hid it.””

Emma looked around.

“Where?””

Richard shook his head.

“We never found it.””

Lily suddenly spoke.

“Maybe I know.””

Everyone turned.

She touched her necklace.

“Grandma told me something.””

Emma crouched.

“What did she tell you?””

Lily frowned, trying to remember.

“She said if I ever came to a place where everyone was looking for something, I should look where nobody wants to dance.””

Emma stared at her.

Daniel's eyes widened.

“Where nobody wants to dance.””

Richard looked around the archive.

“That's not here.””

Lily shook her head.

“She said it was cold.””

Emma's heart began racing.

“Cold?””

Lily nodded.

“And there was a mirror.””

Daniel looked at Richard.

“The old rehearsal studio.””

Richard went pale.

“It was demolished.””

“No,” Daniel said.

“The studio was closed. The building above it was demolished.””

Emma looked at Lily.

“Can you remember where?””

Lily nodded slowly.

She walked toward the far wall.

Then she stopped.

“There.””

Richard frowned.

“That's just storage.””

Lily pointed to a narrow metal door behind several boxes.

“I remember that door.””

Emma moved the boxes aside.

There was a small lock.

The key from the envelope fit perfectly.

The door opened.

A cold draft rushed across Emma's face.

Behind it was a narrow staircase.

They descended.

At the bottom was an abandoned dance studio.

Dust covered the mirrors.

Old wooden floors stretched across the room.

A single ceiling light flickered.

Lily walked inside.

Then she stopped.

Her face changed.

“Grandma danced here.””

Emma followed.

In the center of the floor was a small wooden box.

Emma knelt.

Inside was a notebook.

She opened it.

Every page was filled with Clara's handwriting.

Dance counts.

Financial numbers.

Names.

Dates.

Transfers.

Emma turned page after page.

Then she saw the final entry.

If anything happens to me, the ledger is not the most important thing.

Below it was another sentence.

The most important thing is the person who ordered the transfers.

Emma looked at Richard.

“Who?””

Richard didn't answer.

She turned the page.

A name was written in red ink.

Emma read it once.

Then again.

Her hands went numb.

Victoria Ashford.

Lily stepped closer.

“Mom?””

Emma couldn't speak.

Daniel took the notebook.

His face went pale.

Richard whispered:

“That's impossible.””

Suddenly, the studio lights went out.

A door slammed upstairs.

Someone had entered the building.

Daniel pulled out his phone.

“No signal.””

Emma grabbed Lily.

Then a voice came through the darkness.

“You should have left the archive alone.””

Victoria.

Emma held her daughter tighter.

The sound of footsteps approached the studio.

Slow.

Calm.

Unhurried.

Then Victoria appeared at the top of the stairs.

She wasn't alone.

Beside her stood a man Emma recognized from the photograph.

Ethan Vale.

Victoria smiled.

“You finally found him.””

Richard stared.

“Ethan?””

Ethan looked at Emma.

Then at Lily.

May you like

And said:

“I'm sorry.””
