Chapter 9: The Last Person I Expected to Betray Me

I didn't sleep that night.

I sat in my mother's old study, surrounded by photographs, documents, and memories.

There was a picture of my father standing outside his first construction office.

Another showed my mother holding me as a newborn.

And beside the bookshelf was a photograph of Robert Hale.

My uncle.

He had been my father's closest relative and business partner.

When I was a child, he used to bring me baseball cards and take me fishing. After my father died, he disappeared.

My mother said he had moved overseas.

She never explained why.

Now I knew.

He had been involved in the same property fraud that destroyed my father's business.

And he had apparently returned to finish what he started.

At 8:15 the next morning, Detective Mitchell called.

"We located Robert.""

"Where?""

"He's staying at a hotel under the name Richard Coleman.""

"Have you arrested him?""

"Not yet. We need to establish his involvement in the financial transactions.""

I looked at the photograph.

"Can I speak to him?""

"That's not advisable.""

"I don't care.""

"Mr. Hale, this man may be dangerous.""

I looked around the study.

My father's photograph rested on the desk.

"I've spent eight months being treated like a helpless man. I'm done hiding.""

Detective Mitchell sighed.

"I'll arrange a controlled meeting.""

Two hours later, I was sitting in a private conference room at the police station.

Nathan was beside me.

Daniel sat across the table.

Detective Mitchell stood near the door.

Then Robert walked in.

He was older than I remembered.

His hair had turned completely white, and his face was thinner. But his eyes were the same.

Sharp.

Calculating.

He looked at me and smiled.

"Marcus.""

I didn't stand.

"Uncle Robert.""

He pulled out a chair.

"I heard about your accident. Terrible business.""

I stared at him.

"You heard about it?""

"Of course. I tried to visit.""

"No, you didn't.""

He chuckled.

"You always were suspicious.""

I placed the photograph of him with Evelyn on the table.

"Who is she?""

He glanced at it.

"Evelyn Cross. An old acquaintance.""

"An old acquaintance who wants my family's property?""

He folded his hands.

"Business is complicated.""

"Not as complicated as trying to kill your own nephew.""

His smile disappeared.

"I don't know what you've been told.""

"Then let me tell you what I know.""

I slid the hospital records across the table.

"Someone altered my medication. Someone forged my signature. Someone tampered with my brakes.

Someone used my mother's foundation to transfer money. And someone tried to steal twenty-two million dollars from a family trust.""

Robert glanced at the documents.

Then he looked at Nathan.

"Your brother is emotional.""

Nathan leaned forward.

"Don't talk about him like that.""

Robert smiled.

"Still playing the loyal brother?""

Nathan clenched his fists.

I raised a hand.

"Answer me.""

Robert looked at me again.

"What do you want to know?""

"Why?""

He laughed quietly.

"Because your father left a mess.""

"My father?""

"Your father owed people money. He made promises he couldn't keep. He took risks.""

"You're lying.""

Robert's expression hardened.

"Your father was not the saint your mother made him out to be.""

I stood.

"Then why did you disappear after he died?""

Robert leaned back.

"Because your mother blamed me for everything.""

"What did you do?""

He looked toward the detective.

Then back at me.

"I protected my interests.""

"By stealing from your brother?""

"Your father and I built that business together. I deserved half.""

"You had a contract.""

"He changed it.""

"Because you were stealing from him.""

Robert's eyes narrowed.

For the first time, he looked genuinely angry.

"Your father thought he could cut me out and leave everything to his precious sons. He thought I would simply accept it.""

I felt my hands trembling.

"Did you arrange the accident?""

He said nothing.

"Did you?""

Robert leaned forward.

"I didn't touch your car.""

"Did you tell Adrian to?""

His expression changed.

A fraction of a second.

But I saw it.

"Who is Adrian?"" he asked.

I almost laughed.

"That's a terrible lie.""

Detective Mitchell stepped closer.

"Mr. Hale, we're recording this conversation.""

Robert glanced at her.

Then he turned toward me.

"Marcus, you should listen carefully. Vanessa was never the real problem.""

I stared at him.

"What do you mean?""

"She wanted money. Adrian wanted freedom. Evelyn wanted the land. But I wanted something else.""

"What?""

He smiled.

"The original trust.""

I felt cold.

"What about it?""

"Your mother hid something in the estate documents.""

"What?""

Robert's smile widened.

"The original ownership agreement. The one proving that the waterfront properties were never transferred to your father.""

I looked at Daniel.

He was already checking his notes.

Robert continued.

"Your father believed he owned those properties. He didn't. Your mother held the original deed. And she left it somewhere nobody would think to look.""

"Where?""

Robert laughed.

"If I knew, I wouldn't be sitting here.""

I leaned forward.

"Then why have you spent twenty years trying to find it?""

His smile faded.

"Because whoever owns those properties controls the entire development.""

Detective Mitchell moved closer.

"That's enough.""

Robert suddenly stood.

"You think you've won because you've recovered your eyesight? You think the police can protect you?""

He pointed at me.

"Your mother knew what I was capable of. That's why she hid the deed. And that's why I made sure nobody could find it.""

I felt my throat tighten.

"What did you do to my mother?""

For the first time, Robert looked away.

Daniel stood.

"Marcus, don't.""

But I couldn't stop.

"Did you threaten her?""

Robert said nothing.

"Did you send someone after her?""

He finally looked at me.

"Your mother made her own choices.""

Detective Mitchell stepped between us.

"Mr. Hale, you're under arrest for questioning in connection with suspected financial fraud, identity theft, and conspiracy.""

Robert didn't resist.

As the officers escorted him away, he turned toward me.

"Ask Nathan where he found the letter.""

I looked at my brother.

Robert smiled.

"Ask him why he waited until now to show you.""

Then he disappeared through the doorway.

I slowly turned toward Nathan.

"What did he mean?""

Nathan looked pale.

"I don't know.""

"Don't lie to me.""

He rubbed his face.

Then he reached into his jacket.

He removed a small brass key.

"I found this in Mom's old house.""

I stared at it.

"Where?""

"Inside the back of her bedroom mirror.""

I took the key.

A number had been engraved on its side.

*314.*

Daniel examined it.

"That looks like a safe-deposit key.""

Nathan nodded.

"That's what I thought.""

"Where's the box?""

Nathan swallowed.

"At First National Bank.""

I looked at him.

"Why didn't you tell me?""

He lowered his head.

"Because I opened it.""

My stomach tightened.

"What was inside?""

Nathan looked at Daniel.

Then back at me.

"Photographs. An original property deed. And a letter addressed to both of us.""

"Where is it?""

He pulled a folded piece of paper from his wallet.

"I brought it.""

I opened the letter.

My mother's handwriting filled the page.

*My beloved boys,*

*If you're reading this, someone has finally begun searching for what your father and I protected.*

*There is something you must understand. The house, the land, and the money were never the most important things I left behind.*

*The truth is.*

I turned the page.

And stopped.

The final paragraph contained a sentence that made me look at Nathan in disbelief.

*One of you was adopted.*

I slowly raised my eyes.

Nathan's face was completely white.

Then he whispered:

"Marcus, there's something else Mom told me before she died.""

"What?""

He looked directly into my eyes.

"You're not Robert Hale's nephew.""

May you like

He paused.

"You're his son.""
