Chapter 5: The Woman Who Had Been Watching
Claire looked older than I remembered.
Her dark hair was tied into a loose bun, and she wore a gray coat that was soaked from the rain. She held a leather briefcase against her chest.
When she entered the living room, her eyes went directly to me.
"Mr. Hale.""
"Claire.""
She stopped a few feet away.
Then she looked at my face.
"You're seeing again.""
"Enough.""
Her eyes filled with tears.
"Thank God.""
Vanessa crossed her arms.
"This is a private family matter.""
Claire didn't even look at her.
"No, Vanessa. It stopped being a family matter when you tried to have him killed.""
The room went silent.
Vanessa stepped forward.
"Watch your mouth.""
Claire opened her briefcase.
"I brought copies of everything.""
Nathan moved aside to give her space.
I looked at her.
"Start from the beginning.""
Claire took a deep breath.
"Three weeks before your accident, Vanessa contacted me about changing your life insurance beneficiary.""
"I saw the email.""
"There's more. She told me you had approved the change verbally.""
"Did I?""
"No.""
"How do you know?""
"Because I asked you directly.""
I remembered the conversation.
Claire had called me during a business trip and asked whether I wanted to update my insurance documents.
I had told her no.
She nodded.
"That's what I thought. So I refused to process the request.""
Vanessa laughed sharply.
"You're lying.""
Claire removed a printed email.
"Then explain this message you sent me afterward.""
She placed it on the table.
*If you don't cooperate, I'll tell Marcus about the money you took from the company.*
Claire looked at me.
"I didn't steal anything. Vanessa was trying to force me to process the beneficiary change.""
I studied the message.
"What money?""
Claire hesitated.
"Your company had an emergency reserve account. Approximately $640,000 was transferred out over six months.""
My stomach tightened.
"By whom?""
Claire pointed toward Vanessa.
"Her.""
Vanessa stepped backward.
"That's absurd.""
Claire placed another document on the table.
"This is the transfer authorization.""
The signature was mine again.
Except the handwriting was wrong.
I could see it clearly now.
My signature had a distinctive upward stroke at the end of the letter H. This one slanted downward.
"Who signed it?"" I asked.
Claire looked at Vanessa.
"Adrian.""
Nathan swore under his breath.
I sat very still.
For months, I had believed Vanessa was helping me manage my business.
Instead, she had been draining it.
"How did you discover the theft?""
Claire opened another folder.
"I noticed the transfers shortly before your accident. I reported them to the company's external accountant.""
"And?""
"Two days later, I received a call from Adrian.""
"What did he say?""
She swallowed.
"He told me to stop investigating if I wanted to keep my job.""
I stared at her.
"Why didn't you come to me?""
"I tried. Vanessa intercepted your calls. Then you had the accident.""
Claire's voice cracked.
"Afterward, I went to the hospital twice. Vanessa told security that you didn't want visitors.""
I turned toward my wife.
She was staring at the floor.
"Is that true?""
She said nothing.
"Vanessa?""
She lifted her chin.
"You were in no condition to deal with business problems.""
"So you decided to steal from me?""
"I was protecting our future!""
The words exploded from her mouth.
Everyone froze.
She seemed to realize what she'd said.
Then she continued, louder.
"You have no idea what it was like living with you after the accident. Every day was another appointment, another doctor, another bill. I couldn't go anywhere without worrying about you.""
I looked at her.
"Then you could have left.""
She laughed bitterly.
"And lose everything?""
There it was.
Not love.
Not sacrifice.
Money.
She had stayed because she wanted what I owned.
Claire reached into her briefcase again.
"There's something else.""
She removed a small flash drive.
"I copied the original security footage from the underground parking garage.""
Nathan leaned forward.
"Is this the footage showing Adrian near the car?""
"Yes. But there's another camera.""
She connected the drive to the television.
The screen flickered.
A grainy image appeared.
It showed the underground garage outside my office building.
The timestamp was two days before my accident.
Adrian walked into the frame.
He approached my car.
Then he opened the driver's side door.
Vanessa appeared a minute later.
She handed him something.
He examined it.
Then he crouched near the rear wheel.
I felt my stomach turn.
"Can you zoom in?"" I asked.
Claire nodded.
The image enlarged.
Adrian was holding a small metal tool.
Vanessa stood beside him, watching the entrance.
Then she leaned toward him and said something.
The footage had no sound.
But her lips were visible.
Claire paused the video.
"There's a specialist who can analyze lip movements.""
I looked at the screen.
"Do you know what she said?""
Claire hesitated.
"I hired someone to examine the footage.""
"And?""
"He believes she said, 'Make sure he doesn't make it home.''"
The room became painfully quiet.
I looked at Vanessa.
She was trembling now.
Not with guilt.
With anger.
"You've been planning this for months," I said.
She shook her head.
"Marcus, you don't understand.""
"Then explain.""
"It wasn't supposed to happen like that.""
I felt the air leave my lungs.
"What wasn't?""
She covered her mouth.
Nathan stepped forward.
"What wasn't supposed to happen?""
Vanessa looked at him, then at me.
Finally, she whispered, "Adrian said the brakes would fail slowly. He said you'd survive long enough for the insurance company to pay out, but you wouldn't be able to work anymore.""
I stared at her.
"And you agreed?""
She began crying.
"I didn't know you'd lose your eyesight.""
I couldn't believe what I was hearing.
She hadn't denied arranging the sabotage.
She was simply explaining that the result had been worse than expected.
"Did you know I might die?""
She looked away.
I nodded slowly.
"Thank you for answering.""
Claire quietly reached for her phone.
Vanessa noticed.
"What are you doing?""
"Calling the police.""
Vanessa lunged toward her.
Nathan blocked her.
"Don't even think about it.""
She slapped him.
He barely moved.
Then she turned toward me.
"Marcus, please. We can fix this.""
I looked at the woman who had kissed another man while believing I couldn't see her.
The woman who had forged my signature.
The woman who had watched someone tamper with my brakes.
And the woman who had spent eight months pretending to be my devoted wife.
"No, Vanessa.""
She dropped to her knees.
"Please.""
I looked toward the front window.
Blue lights reflected across the wet glass.
"There's nothing left to fix.""
A moment later, the doorbell rang.
Nathan walked toward the entrance.
But before he could open it, my phone vibrated.
An unknown number.
One message.
*MARCUS, DON'T TRUST CLAIRE. SHE WASN'T THE ONLY ONE WHO HELPED VANESSA. CHECK YOUR HOSPITAL RECORDS.*
I read it twice.
Then I looked at Claire.
Her expression had changed.
She was no longer crying.
She was staring at my phone as if she already knew what the message said.
I slowly raised my eyes.
"Claire?""
She swallowed.
"Marcus, I can explain.""
"Explain what?""
She glanced toward the police lights outside.
Then she whispered:
May you like
"Your wife didn't arrange the accident alone.""
And suddenly, I realized that the person who had just brought me the evidence might have been hiding the biggest secret of all.
