Chapter 4: The Account Angela Left Behind

For several seconds, I couldn't speak.

The education account.

Angela had opened it when Maya was six.

It wasn't a large fortune.

It was simply something we had built slowly, month after month, from overtime checks, holiday bonuses, and money we had saved instead of spending.

Angela used to call it Maya's future.

After she died, I continued making deposits.

Some months, I could afford more than others.

But I never stopped.

When Maya graduated high school, I told her the account would help pay for college or nursing school.

She had cried.

Not because of the money.

Because she remembered her mother saying the same thing.

I turned toward Denise.

“What did you do with that account?””

She crossed her arms.

“Nothing.””

“Then why did you bring it up?””

“Because Maya keeps acting like she has been completely honest about everything.””

Maya stood.

“I haven't touched that account.””

Denise laughed bitterly.

“You don't even know what happened.””

“Then explain it.””

Denise looked at me.

“Your wife is standing right here, Marcus. Maybe you should ask her instead of interrogating a twenty-two-year-old.””

I took a slow breath.

“I'm asking you.””

She stared at me.

Then she said something I wasn't prepared to hear.

“I withdrew money.””

The room seemed to shrink.

“How much?””

She hesitated.

“Five thousand.””

I felt my throat tighten.

“Five thousand dollars?””

“It was a temporary loan.””

“You withdrew money from Maya's education account?””

“I intended to put it back.””

“When?””

“When things settled down.””

I stared at her.

“Did you tell me?””

She shook her head.

“Because you would have said no.””

The honesty of that answer was almost worse than another lie.

I walked to the hallway.

“Jordan, take Brianna downstairs. I need to speak to Denise.””

Jordan looked uncomfortable.

“Marcus—”

“Please.””

He nodded.

Maya remained beside me.

I turned toward her.

“Sweetheart, I need you to go downstairs too.””

She looked worried.

“Are you sure?””

“Yes.””

She squeezed my hand before leaving.

Denise closed the bedroom door.

Then she sat on Maya's desk chair.

“Marcus, I can explain.””

“Start with the account.””

She rubbed her palms together.

“I was short on money. The loan payment was due, and I didn't want the lender contacting us.””

“Why was the loan payment due?””

“Because the interest had increased.””

“How much?””

She didn't answer.

I repeated the question.

“How much was the payment?””

“Eight hundred and forty dollars.””

“Every month?””

She nodded.

I stared at her.

“And you couldn't afford it?””

“Not with everything else.””

“Everything else meaning what?””

She looked away.

“Jordan's car. Brianna's tuition. Household expenses.””

I shook my head.

“You keep using the same explanation.””

“Because it's true!””

“Then show me the money.””

Denise looked irritated.

“What?””

“The loan documents. The account statements. The transfers.””

She stood.

“I don't have to prove every decision I make to you.””

I stared at her.

“You took money from an account Angela created for her daughter.””

Denise's face changed.

“Don't bring Angela into this.””

“I don't have to bring her into anything. She was already part of this account.””

“You always do this.””

“Do what?””

“Make me feel like I'm competing with a dead woman.””

I couldn't believe what I was hearing.

“This isn't about you competing with Angela.””

“It always is!””

She pointed toward the door.

“Every time Maya cries, you look at me like I've committed some unforgivable sin. You keep treating her like she's made of glass because her mother died.””

I felt something inside me harden.

“Angela's death does not give you permission to take from her daughter.””

Denise shook her head.

“I was trying to help this family.””

“Then why didn't you tell me?””

“Because you would have stopped me.””

I looked at her.

“And now you understand why?””

She sat down again.

For the first time, she looked genuinely tired.

“I didn't think it would become this big.””

I took out my phone.

“I'm calling the bank.””

Her head snapped up.

“Why?””

“To verify the account.””

“You don't need to do that.””

“I'm doing it.””

I stepped into the hallway.

Denise followed me.

“Marcus, wait.””

I ignored her and called the bank's customer service number.

After the usual security questions, I explained that I needed to verify withdrawals from Maya's education account.

The representative asked me to hold.

I stood near the staircase.

Denise remained a few feet away.

When the representative returned, her voice was professional.

“Mr. Hale, I can confirm that a withdrawal of $5,000 was made on March 11.””

I closed my eyes.

“Where was it transferred?””

“An external account ending in 4821.””

“Whose account?””

There was a pause.

“It's listed under Denise Hale.””

I looked at my wife.

She was staring at the floor.

I continued.

“Were there any other withdrawals?””

The representative paused again.

“Yes, sir. There was another withdrawal of $2,500 on April 2.””

I felt my stomach drop.

“Another $2,500?””

“Yes.””

“Where did that go?””

“The same external account.””

I looked at Denise.

She finally raised her head.

“Marcus, I can explain.””

I turned away.

“Is there anything else?”” I asked the representative.

“There is also a pending transfer request.””

My grip tightened around the phone.

“What amount?””

“Three thousand dollars.””

“Cancel it.””

“Certainly. I can place a temporary restriction on outgoing transfers while you review the account.””

“Do that.””

After ending the call, I stood motionless.

Seven thousand five hundred dollars.

And another three thousand waiting to disappear.

I turned toward Denise.

“You said five thousand.””

She rubbed her forehead.

“I forgot about the second withdrawal.””

“You forgot?””

“It happened during a difficult time.””

“Where did the money go?””

She didn't answer.

I stepped closer.

“Denise, where did seven thousand five hundred dollars go?””

She finally spoke.

“Some of it went to Brianna.””

I stared at her.

“Brianna?””

“She needed to clear a balance at school.””

Maya's $700 payment had apparently not been enough.

“And the rest?””

Denise looked toward the kitchen.

“Jordan had a problem.””

I shook my head.

“What problem?””

“His car was about to be repossessed.””

“Why didn't you tell me?””

“Because you would have made him feel worse.””

I laughed once.

Not because anything was funny.

Because I suddenly understood how many conversations had happened behind my back.

How many decisions had been made while I was working.

How many times Maya had been told to keep quiet.

I walked downstairs.

Jordan and Brianna were sitting on the couch.

Maya was standing near the window.

She looked at me immediately.

“Dad?””

I nodded.

“I confirmed the withdrawals.””

Her face tightened.

“How much?””

“Seven thousand five hundred dollars.””

Maya covered her mouth.

Brianna looked up.

“What's going on?””

I turned toward her.

“Did Denise give you money from Maya's education account?””

Brianna's eyes widened.

“What?””

“Did you receive any money from Denise in March or April?””

She looked toward her mother.

Denise had just reached the bottom of the stairs.

“Brianna, don't answer that.””

I turned.

“Why not?””

“Because you're confusing everyone.””

Brianna slowly stood.

“I received money.””

Denise closed her eyes.

“How much?”” I asked.

“Three thousand dollars.””

I looked at Jordan.

He was staring at the floor.

“And you?””

Jordan swallowed.

“I got about two thousand.””

I felt dizzy.

“That's five thousand.””

Denise stepped forward.

“The rest went toward household expenses.””

I looked at Maya.

She had gone very still.

“Dad,” she whispered, “I paid Brianna seven hundred dollars because Denise told me her tuition was overdue.””

Brianna looked at her.

“I know.””

Maya blinked.

“You knew?””

Brianna's voice cracked.

“Mom said you were helping.””

“Did you know she had already taken money from my education account?””

Brianna didn't answer.

Jordan finally spoke.

“None of us knew about that part.””

I looked at him.

“Did you know Maya was paying your insurance?””

He nodded.

“Mom told me.””

“Did you know she was paying Brianna's tuition?””

He hesitated.

“Yeah.””

Maya looked between them.

“So you both knew I was giving money to Mom?””

Brianna wiped her cheek.

“We thought it was something you agreed to.””

“I didn't agree to all of it.””

Denise interrupted.

“This is getting out of hand.””

I turned toward her.

“No. This is the first time everyone is hearing the truth at the same time.””

She stared at me.

Then she said something that made the room go silent.

“If you want to know where the rest of the money went, ask Brianna about the apartment deposit.””

Brianna's face drained of color.

Jordan looked at his sister.

“What apartment deposit?””

Denise didn't answer.

Brianna took a step backward.

May you like

“Mom, you promised you wouldn't tell them.””

And suddenly, the missing money was no longer the only secret in the room.
