Chapter 9: The Day Everything Came Out
The meeting was scheduled for ten in the morning.
I arrived at Daniel's office fifteen minutes early.
He had already prepared a folder containing the original trust documents, the disputed authorization, the email correspondence, and the financial records.
He looked at me.
"How are you holding up?""
"Honestly?""
"Yes.""
"I'm furious.""
Daniel nodded.
"That's understandable. But today, let the documents do the talking.""
At 9:55, Gregory arrived.
Richard Cole followed him.
Denise entered last.
She looked pale.
She was wearing a gray business suit and carrying a leather handbag.
For a moment, she looked like the woman I had married.
Then I remembered Maya standing beside the staircase, terrified that she would lose her bedroom.
I pushed the memory aside.
Daniel introduced everyone.
Gregory sat opposite me.
"Marcus, I'm glad we can finally have a sensible conversation.""
I didn't answer.
Richard opened his briefcase.
"We've prepared a revised proposal.""
Daniel held up his hand.
"Before we discuss any proposal, we need clarification regarding the previous documents.""
Gregory sighed.
"Must we go through all that again?""
"Yes," Daniel replied.
He placed the disputed authorization on the table.
"Who prepared this document?""
Richard looked at Gregory.
Gregory looked at Denise.
Denise stared at the table.
Finally, Richard answered.
"I received the information from Mrs. Bennett.""
Daniel nodded.
"And who supplied the signature?""
"I received a scanned copy.""
"From whom?""
Richard hesitated.
"Mrs. Bennett.""
I looked at my wife.
"Where did you get my signature?""
Denise closed her eyes.
"From the household files.""
I felt my jaw tighten.
Daniel continued.
"Did Mr. Bennett authorize you to use it?""
"No.""
Gregory shifted in his chair.
"This is becoming an interrogation.""
Daniel turned toward him.
"Mr. Bennett has a right to understand why documents bearing his signature were circulated without his authorization.""
Gregory leaned forward.
"Denise believed Marcus would eventually agree.""
I looked at him.
"Why?""
"Because it made financial sense.""
"For whom?""
Gregory didn't answer.
Daniel opened another folder.
"Let's discuss the proposed purchase price.""
He placed the independent valuation beside the offer.
The difference was substantial.
Then he showed the projected redevelopment profits.
Finally, he placed the private profit-sharing agreement on the table.
Gregory's face changed.
"Where did you get that?""
I looked at him.
"From the woman you involved.""
Denise began crying.
Gregory turned toward her.
"You gave him the agreement?""
She shook her head.
"Gregory, I can't do this anymore.""
He stared at her.
"You said you wanted this.""
"I didn't know it would go this far.""
Gregory laughed.
"You knew exactly what you were doing.""
I looked at him.
"Don't speak to her like that.""
He turned toward me.
"Now you're defending her?""
"No. I'm telling you to stop treating people like pieces on a board.""
Daniel placed one final document on the table.
It was a copy of the inquiry sent to the trust administrator.
It included the question about my temporary unavailability and the possibility of changing the trustee.
Daniel pointed to the email address.
"Can you explain this?""
Gregory looked at Denise.
Denise began shaking her head.
"I didn't write that.""
I stared at her.
"What?""
"I didn't write that email.""
Gregory leaned back.
"Nobody is accusing anyone of anything.""
Daniel remained calm.
"The request originated from an account associated with Mrs. Bennett. We have asked the administrator to preserve the submission records.""
Gregory's expression hardened.
He turned toward Denise.
"You need to stop talking.""
She looked at him.
"No.""
"Denise.""
"No, Gregory.""
Her voice trembled.
"But she continued.
"You told me Marcus would agree. You told me the trust could be changed. You said the property would be transferred without Maya being able to interfere.""
I stared at her.
"Maya?""
Denise looked at me.
"You weren't supposed to find out.""
Gregory stood.
"This meeting is over.""
Daniel didn't move.
"Not until we establish the status of the proposed transaction.""
Gregory picked up his briefcase.
"You people can do whatever you want. The agreement is still valid.""
Daniel looked at him.
"That is a matter for the relevant legal authorities and the courts if necessary.""
Gregory walked toward the door.
Then Denise spoke.
"Gregory, sit down.""
He stopped.
She was crying now.
But her voice had become stronger.
"You promised me the money would protect Jordan and Noah.""
Gregory turned.
"It would have.""
"Then why did you tell Richard to prepare the second agreement?""
He said nothing.
Denise wiped her face.
"Tell him.""
Gregory stared at her.
She turned toward me.
"Marcus, there was another arrangement.""
Daniel leaned forward.
"What arrangement?""
Denise took a folded document from her handbag.
"I found it yesterday.""
She passed it across the table.
Daniel opened it.
I watched his expression change.
"What is it?"" I asked.
He read the first page.
Then he turned it toward me.
It was a private repayment agreement.
The document stated that Gregory had borrowed money from Denise.
The amount was $95,000.
I looked at my wife.
"Where did this money come from?""
She shook her head.
"From my personal savings.""
I stared at her.
"You gave Gregory ninety-five thousand dollars?""
She nodded.
"Over the last year.""
"Why?""
"He said he was investing it.""
I looked at Gregory.
He didn't deny it.
Daniel examined the repayment schedule.
Then he looked up.
"Mr. Bennett, this may be important.""
"What?""
"The document suggests Mrs. Bennett was expecting repayment from the proceeds of the property transaction.""
I turned toward Denise.
"So you weren't only trying to sell my house.""
She began crying.
"You don't understand.""
"Then explain it.""
She covered her face.
"I wanted my money back.""
I stared at her.
"Your ninety-five thousand dollars?""
She nodded.
"Gregory said he would repay me when the property deal was completed. He promised I would receive my share and recover what I had invested.""
Gregory slammed his hand on the table.
"Enough!""
Denise flinched.
Daniel immediately stood.
"Lower your voice.""
Gregory pointed at his sister.
"She knew what she was doing.""
Denise looked at him.
"You told me Marcus would never notice.""
I felt my blood run cold.
"Notice what?""
She hesitated.
Then she said:
"The household account.""
I stared at her.
"What about it?""
She took a breath.
"I transferred money from the account to help cover the payments.""
I looked at Daniel.
He already had the financial records.
"How much?""
Daniel checked the statement.
"Approximately forty-two thousand dollars has been identified in the transactions we've reviewed. We need to verify the full amount.""
I looked at Denise.
"You used our money to finance your brother's investment.""
She began sobbing.
"Gregory said he would replace it.""
I leaned back.
For a moment, I couldn't speak.
Then I asked:
"What about the message sent to Maya?""
Denise looked confused.
"What message?""
"The one telling her to ask me who really owned the house.""
She shook her head.
"I didn't send that.""
Gregory looked away.
Daniel noticed.
"Mr. Bennett, do you know who sent it?""
Gregory remained silent.
Then Richard Cole spoke.
"I do.""
Everyone turned toward him.
He looked uncomfortable.
"I sent the message.""
Denise stared at him.
"Why?""
Richard swallowed.
"Because I thought Mr. Bennett needed to know that the transaction wasn't as straightforward as Gregory had described.""
Gregory stood.
"You idiot.""
Richard ignored him.
He turned toward me.
"Mr. Bennett, I have copies of the original communications. Including instructions about the trust and the property authorization.""
Daniel leaned forward.
"Can you provide those records?""
Richard nodded.
"Yes.""
Gregory picked up his briefcase.
"You're making a serious mistake.""
Richard looked at him.
"No. I made one when I agreed to help you.""
Gregory walked out.
The door closed.
For several seconds, the room was silent.
Then Denise looked at me.
"Marcus, please. I know I've made mistakes.""
I stared at her.
"Mistakes?""
She wiped her cheeks.
"I can fix this.""
"How?""
"I'll repay the money.""
"With what?""
She had no answer.
I stood.
"Daniel will handle the property and financial matters. Any communication about the trust goes through him.""
Denise reached for my hand.
"Don't leave me.""
I looked down.
Then I remembered the anniversary photograph.
Maya's frightened expression.
The note telling her that her father no longer wanted her.
I gently pulled my hand away.
"You made your choice long before today.""
I walked toward the door.
Behind me, Denise began crying again.
But I didn't turn around.
Outside, my phone rang.
It was Angela.
"Marcus, Maya is asking when you're coming home.""
I looked at the sky.
"Tell her I'm on my way.""
Then Angela added:
"There's something else. She received another message.""
I stopped.
"What message?""
Angela hesitated.
"It says Denise wants to see her alone.""
My blood ran cold.
"Tell Maya not to go anywhere.""
I started walking faster.
May you like
Because the meeting was over.
But I had a feeling Denise wasn't finished.
