Chapter 6: The Signature That Wasn't Mine

"According to this agreement, Mr. Bennett, the property transfer process has already been initiated.""

The man standing beside my wife spoke as though he were explaining the terms of an ordinary business transaction.

I looked at him.

Then I looked at the document in his hands.

It contained my name, my address, and a signature that looked almost identical to mine.

Almost.

Denise stood beside Gregory with her arms folded.

She wasn't smiling anymore.

"Marcus, please sit down," she said.

"We can settle this like adults.""

I didn't move.

"Who is this man?""

Denise sighed.

"Mr. Lawson represents the purchasing company.""

I turned toward Gregory.

"And you're here because?""

Gregory smiled.

"Because Denise asked me to help.""

I looked at Maya.

She was standing behind the staircase, clutching the railing.

"Sweetheart, go upstairs for a moment.""

Denise immediately interrupted.

"She needs to hear this.""

I turned toward her.

"No. She doesn't.""

"Marcus, she's involved in this.""

"She's fifteen. She doesn't need to sit through a discussion about a property transaction you arranged behind my back.""

Gregory shook his head.

"You're making this unnecessarily emotional.""

I looked at him.

"You're standing in my living room holding a document with my forged signature. I think emotions are the least of our problems.""

Mr. Lawson cleared his throat.

"Perhaps we should clarify something. The document is a preliminary authorization, not a completed transfer.""

I held out my hand.

"Let me see it.""

He hesitated.

Then he passed it to me.

I read the first paragraph.

It claimed I had authorized the transfer of the property to a company called Bennett Residential Holdings.

I had never heard of it.

The document also stated that the property was being transferred as part of a voluntary restructuring of family assets.

At the bottom was my signature.

I looked at the date.

It was three weeks earlier.

I remembered that day.

I had been in Raleigh inspecting a construction project.

I had spent the evening at a hotel.

Denise had been home with the children.

I turned the page.

There was another signature.

Denise Bennett.

Then I saw something else.

A witness signature.

Richard Cole.

The same property consultant from the emails.

I looked at Mr. Lawson.

"Has this been registered?""

"Not completed, no.""

"Has it been submitted?""

He shifted his weight.

"Some preliminary documents were circulated.""

"By whom?""

He glanced at Denise.

She answered before he could.

"By me.""

I stared at her.

"You submitted a document pretending I authorized the transfer?""

Her voice sharpened.

"I submitted a proposal.""

"With my signature.""

"You knew we wanted to discuss the property.""

"Discussing something and signing a legal document are two different things.""

Gregory stepped forward.

"Marcus, don't be dramatic. Denise was trying to secure the future for all the children.""

I looked at him.

"By selling my daughter's home to a company you control?""

His expression changed.

"Watch your accusations.""

"Then explain why your company is purchasing the property thirty percent below market value.""

Silence.

Mr. Lawson slowly closed his folder.

Denise looked at Gregory.

I caught it.

A quick glance.

A silent conversation.

And suddenly, I understood that they hadn't expected me to know about the company.

"Who told you about the valuation?"" Denise asked.

"Does it matter?""

"It matters because you're misunderstanding the entire arrangement.""

I pulled out my phone.

"My attorney has the original documents.""

Denise's face went pale.

"Daniel Reeves?""

"Yes.""

She looked at Gregory.

He shook his head slightly.

Then Denise turned back to me.

"You involved Daniel?""

"He's my attorney.""

"He's Alicia's attorney!""

I frowned.

"He established the trust.""

"Exactly. He's never been neutral about this family.""

I stared at her.

"He's not supposed to be neutral about protecting Maya's inheritance. That's his job.""

Denise laughed bitterly.

"Everything comes back to Alicia and Maya.""

I took a step toward her.

"Because you've spent months trying to take something that belongs to my daughter.""

She pointed toward the stairs.

"Your daughter has been manipulating you!""

Maya flinched.

I immediately turned.

"Don't.""

Denise continued.

"She knows exactly how to make you feel guilty. She cries, you rescue her, and suddenly I'm the villain.""

I looked at Maya.

She was crying silently.

Then I faced my wife.

"You have one minute to apologize to her.""

Denise laughed.

"I'm not apologizing for telling the truth.""

I nodded.

"Then we're finished discussing this.""

I called Daniel.

He answered immediately.

"Marcus?""

"I'm at home. Denise has a representative here with a preliminary property authorization carrying my signature.""

"Do not sign anything.""

"I haven't.""

"Is the representative still there?""

"Yes.""

"Put him on the phone.""

I handed the phone to Mr. Lawson.

He listened for several seconds.

His expression gradually changed.

"Understood," he said.

He handed the phone back.

Then he closed his folder.

"Mrs. Bennett, I think we should postpone this discussion.""

Denise stood.

"What?""

"Until the authorization has been independently verified.""

Gregory looked furious.

"You're seriously backing out now?""

Mr. Lawson ignored him.

He collected his papers.

"I'll be in touch.""

Then he walked toward the front door.

Gregory followed him.

Before leaving, he turned toward Denise.

"We need to talk.""

The door closed.

For several seconds, neither Denise nor I spoke.

Then she looked at me.

"You've ruined everything.""

I almost laughed.

"Everything?""

"Yes!""

She pointed at the empty coffee table.

"You embarrassed me in front of my brother. You involved lawyers. You made me look like a criminal.""

I stared at her.

"You prepared a false authorization to transfer my daughter's home.""

"I was trying to make sure my children had security!""

"And what about mine?""

Denise looked away.

I took Maya's hand.

"We're going upstairs.""

As we reached the staircase, Denise called after me.

"Marcus, if you walk away now, don't expect me to forgive you.""

I stopped.

I turned around.

"Forgive me?""

She folded her arms.

"Yes.""

I looked at her for a long moment.

Then I said something I had never imagined saying to my wife.

"Denise, I'm not asking you to forgive me. I'm asking you to explain what you did.""

She didn't answer.

I went upstairs with Maya.

That evening, Daniel arrived with another attorney from his firm.

They reviewed the documents and photographed everything.

They also explained that the property transfer could not proceed without the necessary authorization from the trust's legal representatives.

But there was another concern.

The proposed buyer had apparently already paid a deposit to the property consultant.

And the money had come from an account connected to Denise.

Daniel looked at me.

"Marcus, I think we need to investigate the financial side more carefully.""

I nodded.

"Do whatever you need to do.""

Then Maya entered the office.

She was holding an old photograph.

It showed Alicia standing in front of our house, holding Maya when she was three.

"Dad?""

I looked up.

"What's wrong?""

She placed the photograph on my desk.

"I found something in Denise's room.""

My heart skipped.

"What?""

She reached into her pocket and took out a small folded envelope.

Inside was a handwritten note.

It contained a date, a bank reference number, and a sentence:

Once Marcus signs the final agreement, the remaining payment will be released.

Beneath it was another name.

Gregory Bennett.

Daniel took the note.

He read it.

May you like

Then he looked at me.

"Marcus, I think we need to find out exactly how much money has already changed hands.""
