Chapter 8: The Truth Hidden in the Call Log
By eight the next morning, I was sitting in a police interview room with a cup of untouched coffee.
Detective Brooks entered carrying a laptop and a thick folder.
She placed them on the table.
“We've obtained additional records from your company's communication systems,” she said.
“Have you identified the device that sent the message?””
“Not conclusively. But we've narrowed the possibilities.””
She opened the laptop.
A spreadsheet appeared, listing device identifiers, account activity, and timestamps.
“The message to Lily was associated with your account, but the device history indicates that another device may have been used to access the account shortly before it was sent.””
“Vanessa's phone?””
“That's one possibility. We are comparing the records with information obtained through the appropriate legal process.””
I leaned forward.
“What about the blocked call?””
“The prepaid account was activated using company information. That doesn't establish who used the phone, but it gives us a lead.””
“Daniel.””
“Mr. Price is being interviewed today.””
I rubbed my palms against my trousers.
“Can I be there?””
“You may be asked to provide additional information afterward. For now, I need you to tell me whether you ever authorized anyone to use your identity for company communications.””
“No.””
“Did you ever ask Vanessa or Daniel to send messages to your family on your behalf?””
“Not messages like that.””
“Did you ever give either of them permission to access your personal messaging account?””
I hesitated.
“I gave Vanessa my phone passcode. She used my phone to schedule things when I was driving. I didn't explicitly authorize her to send personal messages.””
“Did she know your account recovery information?””
“Yes.””
Detective Brooks wrote that down.
“Then we need to establish which devices were authorized and which were not.””
I stared at the spreadsheet.
“How could someone send a message from my account without me knowing?””
“There are several possibilities. A device could have remained logged in, an account could have been accessed through a browser, or someone could have used your phone directly. We need the technical evidence to determine what occurred here.””
I thought of the hotel room.
The phone on the desk.
Vanessa asking me to hurry.
“I left my phone unattended on Friday afternoon.””
“Where?””
“In the hotel room.””
“Who else was there?””
“Vanessa.””
Detective Brooks nodded.
“Please provide the hotel details and any records you still have. We may need to verify the timeline.””
I did.
Then I told her about the photograph sent to me the night before, the one showing Danielle leaving the house.
The detective took another copy.
“We've asked officers to review the area around your home and your sister-in-law's property. We also recommend that you and your wife avoid sharing your location publicly.””
I nodded.
“What if Daniel is responsible?””
“We will follow the evidence.””
“And if Vanessa is?””
“The same.””
I looked at the table.
“I loved my daughter more than anything.””
Detective Brooks didn't interrupt.
“I know I wasn't always there. I know I made terrible choices. But I never wanted her to believe I didn't love her.””
My voice broke.
“I need someone to understand that.””
The detective's expression softened.
“Mr. Reed, your failures as a husband and your daughter's understanding of your love are not the same question as who sent that message or why. We can investigate the facts without pretending your mistakes didn't matter.””
I lowered my head.
It was the closest thing to mercy anyone had offered me.
An hour later, Detective Brooks escorted me to another room where Vanessa was waiting with her attorney.
She wore a navy blazer and no makeup. Her hair was pulled back, and her hands were folded tightly in front of her.
When she saw me, she looked away.
Her attorney explained that Vanessa had agreed to answer questions about the trip and her contact with Lily, but she would not discuss matters outside the agreed scope.
Detective Brooks began.
“Ms. Cole, did you visit Lily Reed's school on Thursday?””
“Yes.””
“Why?””
Vanessa glanced at me.
“I wanted to speak with her.””
“About what?””
“Marcus.””
I felt my stomach twist.
“Why would you speak to my daughter about me?””
Vanessa swallowed.
“Because she had questions.””
“What questions?””
“She knew about us.””
The words hung in the room.
I stared at her.
“You told an eight-year-old about our affair?””
“I didn't tell her everything.””
“You told her enough to frighten her.””
Vanessa looked down.
“She asked whether you were going to leave her mother. I told her grown-ups sometimes make difficult decisions.””
“And you told her not to tell Danielle?””
Vanessa's eyes filled.
“I thought I was protecting everyone.””
I leaned forward.
“From what?””
“From the truth.””
For several seconds, nobody spoke.
Then Detective Brooks asked, “Did you send Lily the message telling her not to call you?””
Vanessa shook her head.
“No.””
“Did you have access to Mr. Reed's phone?””
“Yes.””
“Did you use it on Friday?””
“I checked the time. I may have answered a work notification.””
“Did you send any messages from his account?””
Vanessa looked at her attorney.
“I don't remember sending that message.””
“That isn't the same as denying it.””
“I know.””
Her voice broke.
“I didn't send it.””
I stared at her.
“Then who did?””
Vanessa closed her eyes.
“Daniel.””
My heart slammed against my ribs.
“What?””
“He knew Marcus's passcode. He knew the company accounts. He had access to the communication system.””
Detective Brooks remained composed.
“What evidence do you have that Mr. Price sent the message?””
Vanessa hesitated.
“He told me he was going to make sure Lily stopped calling Marcus.””
I gripped the edge of the table.
“When?””
“Friday afternoon.””
“Why?””
Vanessa's eyes filled with tears.
“Because she had seen the documents.””
“What documents?””
“The financial records. The transfers. The invoices.””
I stared at her.
“Why would my daughter have those?””
“She found a copy of the blue folder in your office. She saw Daniel taking it. She asked him what it was.””
Vanessa swallowed.
“She recognized your signature on one of the documents and asked whether you had stolen money.””
The words struck me like a physical blow.
“What did Daniel say?””
“He told her it was grown-up business. He said she shouldn't talk about it.””
“And you?””
“I tried to get her to give me the papers.””
“Did you threaten her?””
“No.””
“Did you write the note telling her that her mother would lose everything?””
Vanessa began to cry.
“I didn't write it.””
“Then who did?””
“I don't know.””
I stood.
“You knew my daughter was frightened, and you did nothing to help her.””
Vanessa looked up.
“I tried to help her.””
“You took her from school without telling me.””
“I was trying to get the folder back before Daniel found out she still had it.””
“You put her in my car and drove her to the office!””
“Because I thought you'd be there!””
Her voice cracked across the room.
I froze.
Vanessa pressed both hands against her face.
“I thought you would be there. I thought you could talk to her. She wanted to see you, Marcus. She kept asking when you were coming home.””
I felt sick.
“Why didn't you call me?””
“I did.””
I stared at her.
“What?””
“I called your phone. You didn't answer. I called the hotel room. Nobody answered.””
“Then you should have called Danielle.””
Vanessa's shoulders shook.
“I was afraid Daniel would find out I'd gone against him. He told me if Lily talked, he'd make sure you took the blame for everything.””
“And you believed him?””
“Yes.””
She looked at me through her tears.
“Because I knew the money had gone through your accounts. I knew the documents carried your signature. I thought he could destroy you.””
I stared at her.
“You were protecting yourself.””
Vanessa lowered her head.
“Yes.””
The admission was so quiet that it barely reached me.
She continued.
“I told myself that if I could get the folder back, I could fix everything before anyone knew. I thought I could persuade Lily to stay quiet until you returned.””
“You thought you could control an eight-year-old child who believed her father had rejected her?””
Vanessa began to sob.
“I know how it sounds.””
“It sounds like you cared more about your future than my daughter's life.””
She didn't answer.
Detective Brooks asked her several more questions about the trip, the office, and the financial records. Vanessa's attorney occasionally intervened, and the interview ended without a complete account of what had happened Friday.
As I left the room, Vanessa called after me.
“Marcus.””
I stopped.
She stood behind the table, tears streaking her face.
“I loved you.””
I looked at her.
“No. You loved the life you thought you could have with me.””
Her face crumpled.
I walked out.
Detective Brooks caught up with me in the corridor.
“Mr. Reed, I need to be clear. Ms.
Cole's statements are allegations. We must corroborate them before drawing conclusions.””
“I understand.””
“We're interviewing Mr. Price now.””
I nodded.
As I walked toward the exit, my phone vibrated.
A message from an unknown number.
She told you about the money.
Good.
A second message followed.
Now ask her what happened in the ambulance.
I stopped walking.
Detective Brooks saw my expression.
“What is it?””
I showed her the screen.
She photographed the messages.
“Don't respond,” she said.
But I couldn't stop reading the words.
What happened in the ambulance?
Vanessa had claimed Daniel sent the message.
She had admitted she knew Lily was frightened.
But she still hadn't explained why Lily believed her father didn't want to hear from her.
I called Danielle.
She answered quietly.
“Marcus?””
“Did Lily tell you what happened in the ambulance?””
Danielle went silent.
Then she whispered, “There's something I haven't told you.””
My stomach tightened.
“What?””
“Before Lily lost consciousness, the nurse handed her my phone because she wanted to hear your voice.””
I closed my eyes.
“And?””
“She called your number one more time.””
I could barely breathe.
“What happened?””
“The call connected.””
My fingers went numb.
“What do you mean?””
Danielle began to cry.
“Someone answered, Marcus.””
I gripped the wall.
“What did they say?””
Her voice broke.
“Lily heard a man's voice. He told her that Daddy was busy and she needed to stop bothering him.””
I felt the corridor tilt.
“Who was it?””
May you like
Danielle whispered the answer.
“Daniel Price.””
