Chapter 4: The Camera Outside the School

Detective Brooks placed her laptop on our dining table.

Danielle sat beside me, her hands clasped so tightly that her knuckles had turned pale.

The note from Lily's notebook lay inside a clear evidence sleeve.

I couldn't stop looking at it.

Tell your father what you saw, and your mother will lose everything.

I had seen Vanessa write hundreds of notes.

I knew her handwriting.

Still, I wanted to be wrong.

“Is the footage clear?”” I asked.

“Clear enough to identify the person entering the building,” Detective Brooks said.

“What happened inside is another matter.””

She opened the video file.

The image showed the school's front entrance from a high corner camera. A digital timestamp appeared in the lower right.

Thursday, 3:41 p.m.

A dark sedan pulled into the parking lot.

Vanessa stepped out.

She wore the same cream coat she'd packed for our Savannah trip. Her hair was tied back, and she carried a large brown envelope.

She walked into the building without hesitation.

I leaned closer to the screen.

“Why would she go to Lily's school?””

Detective Brooks paused the footage.

“That's what we're trying to establish.””

The video resumed.

Eight minutes later, Vanessa emerged with Lily.

My daughter was wearing her yellow raincoat. She held Vanessa's hand as they crossed the parking lot.

I stared at the screen.

“Why was Lily with her?””

Danielle's chair scraped backward.

“Oh my God.””

The footage continued.

Vanessa opened the rear passenger door of my car. Lily climbed inside, still holding a small paper bag.

Vanessa leaned through the open door and spoke to her.

Then she reached into the car and fastened Lily's seat belt.

I stood so abruptly that my chair nearly fell over.

“She put my daughter in my car.””

Detective Brooks stopped the video.

“Do you recognize the vehicle?””

“Yes. It's mine.””

“Who had access to it?””

“Me. Danielle, occasionally. Vanessa had access to the keys because she sometimes moved vehicles at the office.””

Danielle turned toward me.

“You let her take Lily?””

“I didn't know she had.””

My voice broke.

“I didn't know.””

Detective Brooks continued the footage.

Vanessa walked around to the driver's side and got in.

The car pulled away.

The timestamp changed to 3:52 p.m.

Danielle pressed both hands over her mouth.

“Where did she take her?””

“We're checking additional cameras,” Detective Brooks said.

“This footage doesn't establish what happened after they left the school.””

I looked at the screen again.

Lily had trusted Vanessa enough to climb into the car.

That was the part I couldn't bear.

My daughter had probably believed Vanessa was taking her to see me.

Or buying her a treat.

Or doing something that grown-ups did when they said they had a surprise.

I gripped the edge of the table.

“Why would she threaten an eight-year-old?””

Detective Brooks closed the video.

“We need to avoid assuming the note's author is responsible for everything else. But we are treating the note and the footage as significant evidence.””

Danielle turned toward me.

“Did Vanessa ever tell you she was going to pick Lily up from school?””

“No.””

“Did you ask her to?””

“No.””

Danielle stared at me.

“You gave her access to your office, your accounts, your phone, and your car. You brought her into every part of your life, and you never thought about what that meant for our daughter.””

I lowered my head.

“I know.””

“No, Marcus. You don't know. You keep saying you didn't know, as if that makes you innocent.””

I had no defense.

She was right.

I had built a life in which Vanessa could reach me more easily than my wife could. I had trusted her with passwords and schedules because it made my work easier. I'd let her blur boundaries because I enjoyed being wanted.

I'd never considered the possibility that my carelessness could become a weapon in someone else's hands.

Detective Brooks spoke gently.

“Mrs. Reed, I understand your anger. Right now, we need to establish the timeline.””

Danielle looked away, breathing hard.

The detective turned back to me.

“Mr. Reed, can you tell me exactly where you were when this footage was recorded?””

“In Savannah. Vanessa and I checked into the hotel Thursday morning.””

“Was your phone with you?””

“Yes.””

“Was it always in your possession?””

I thought about the shower.

The restaurant.

The brief moment when Vanessa had taken my phone to photograph us beside the hotel window.

“No.””

“Did you share any passwords with her?””

“She knew my passcode. She also had access to my work email.””

“Your personal email?””

“I thought she didn't.””

Detective Brooks wrote something down.

“We'll need a complete list of accounts and devices she could access.””

I nodded.

Then my phone rang.

The screen displayed Vanessa's name.

Everyone stared at it.

Detective Brooks gestured for me to answer and put it on speaker.

“Vanessa?””

“Marcus.”” Her voice was breathless.

“Where are you?””

“At home.””

“Is Danielle there?””

“Yes.””

“Put her on.””

“No.””

A sharp exhale came through the speaker.

“You have no idea what she's doing.””

“What are you talking about?””

“She has been trying to destroy me for months. She's using Lily's death to make sure you never leave her.””

Danielle stood up.

“You took my daughter from her school.””

Vanessa went silent.

Then she said, “I was trying to help her.””

The words chilled me.

“Help her with what?”” I demanded.

“Marcus, please. You don't understand what happened.””

“Then explain it.””

“I can't do this over the phone.””

“Why did you take Lily in my car?””

A pause.

“I didn't take her anywhere dangerous.””

Danielle let out a strangled cry.

Detective Brooks leaned toward the phone.

“Ms. Cole, this is Detective Brooks. I need you to answer a few questions about your visit to Lily's school.””

Vanessa's voice changed instantly.

“I have nothing to say without legal counsel.””

“That's your right,” the detective replied.

“We may contact you through the appropriate channels.””

The call ended.

I stared at my phone.

Danielle was shaking.

“She said she was trying to help her.””

Detective Brooks picked up the evidence sleeve.

“People sometimes describe their actions in ways that conceal what they actually did. We'll need to determine the facts.””

I looked at the screen again.

“Can you find out where Vanessa took Lily?””

“We're working on it.””

The detective left shortly afterward to coordinate with investigators and obtain additional footage.

Danielle went upstairs.

I stayed at the table, staring at the frozen image of Vanessa fastening Lily's seat belt.

My phone buzzed.

A new message from an unknown number.

You should ask what Lily saw in your office.

I read it three times.

Then I opened my laptop and searched my email for messages involving Vanessa and Lily.

At first, I found nothing unusual.

Meeting invitations.

Travel confirmations.

Invoices.

Then I searched for the word school.

An email from Vanessa appeared, dated two weeks earlier.

*Subject: Family Day Schedule*

I've updated the calendar for Friday. Lily's school event conflicts with your afternoon meeting, so I moved the meeting to 4:30.

I frowned.

I remembered that meeting.

It had been canceled at the last minute.

I searched the calendar.

The original invitation had been deleted.

Then I searched my archived messages.

An email appeared from my own account, addressed to Vanessa.

Please make sure Danielle doesn't know about the Savannah trip until I'm ready to discuss it.

I stared at the message.

I had written something similar in an email months earlier, but I couldn't remember sending this one.

The timestamp was Thursday at 1:06 p.m.

I had been in Savannah.

I opened the message details.

The email had been sent from a browser session I didn't recognize.

I called Detective Brooks immediately.

She answered on the second ring.

“Mr. Reed?””

“There's an email from my account that I don't remember sending. It was sent while I was in Savannah.””

“Don't delete it. Take a screenshot, preserve the original, and forward the information to the investigator handling the digital evidence. Don't try to access or alter any unfamiliar account sessions yourself.””

“I think Vanessa sent it.””

“It's possible. We need technical evidence before reaching that conclusion.””

I swallowed.

“There's another thing. The message says I didn't want Danielle to know about the trip.””

“Did you?””

I closed my eyes.

“Yes.””

The admission hurt because it was true.

I had hidden the trip.

I'd told Danielle I was attending a regional development conference, not spending a romantic weekend with my mistress.

The email might have been sent by Vanessa, but the deception had been mine.

“Detective, what if this is my fault?””

There was a pause.

“Your choices and another person's actions are separate questions, Mr. Reed. We need to establish both accurately.””

After the call, I returned to the school footage.

I watched Vanessa and Lily leave the building again.

This time, I noticed Lily holding the paper bag against her chest.

She looked up at Vanessa and said something.

The camera had no audio.

Vanessa stopped walking, bent toward Lily, and placed a hand on her shoulder.

Then Lily handed her the bag.

Vanessa opened it.

Her expression changed.

She looked around the parking lot before placing the bag inside her coat.

I leaned closer.

What had Lily given her?

My phone rang again.

This time, it was the hospital.

A records coordinator explained that the hospital had preserved Lily's belongings and that some items were available for authorized collection.

I asked whether there had been anything unusual among them.

The coordinator hesitated.

“Mr. Reed, I can't discuss the contents over the phone without confirming the release arrangements. But there is a small envelope labeled with your name.””

My heart pounded.

“An envelope?””

“Yes. Your wife told us it might belong to you.””

“What's inside?””

“I can't confirm that until the appropriate person collects it.””

I looked toward the staircase.

Danielle was standing there, one hand on the banister.

She had heard the last part.

“Lily left something for you,” she whispered.

I nodded.

She descended slowly.

Then she reached into her pocket and held out a tiny silver key.

“I found this in her coat,” she said.

“I thought it was for one of her craft boxes.””

I took it.

It was attached to a small plastic tag with three handwritten words.

DADDY'S OFFICE DRAWER.

I looked at Danielle.

Then at my phone.

Then at the paused image of Vanessa walking out of Lily's school.

May you like

For the first time, I wondered whether the message that had destroyed my family was only one piece of something much larger.

And whether my daughter had discovered it before any of us.
