Chapter 4: The Camera in the Kitchen
The following morning, I drove to my mother's house.
Malik was sitting at her kitchen table eating pancakes.
There were three pancakes on his plate, a glass of orange juice beside them, and a small bowl of strawberries.
He looked up when I entered.
"Hey, Dad.""
"Hey, son.""
I kissed the top of his head.
My mother placed another cup of coffee on the counter.
"He's been awake since six.""
I looked at Malik.
"Did you sleep?""
"A little.""
"How are you feeling?""
He shrugged.
"Better.""
My mother placed her hands on her hips.
"That boy ate two breakfasts yesterday because he was hungry.""
Malik smiled awkwardly.
"Grandma.""
"What? It's true.""
For the first time in days, I heard him laugh.
I sat across from him.
"Son, I want to ask you something.""
He put down his fork.
"Okay.""
"Did Denise ever tell you that I wanted her to discipline you?""
His smile disappeared.
"She said you told her to make me more responsible.""
I stared at him.
"When?""
"She said it after you started working late.""
I leaned forward.
"Did I ever tell her to stop you from eating?""
He shook his head.
"She said you agreed that I needed consequences.""
My stomach tightened.
"Did she ever say I wanted you to do all the chores?""
"She said you thought I was old enough to handle everything.""
I sat back.
Denise had been using my name.
She hadn't simply been making decisions behind my back.
She had been making Malik believe those decisions came from me.
"Son, I never said any of those things.""
He nodded slowly.
"I believe you.""
But I could see the uncertainty in his face.
Trust doesn't return simply because someone finally tells the truth.
It returns through actions.
And I had a lot of work to do.
After breakfast, I asked Malik whether he would be comfortable showing me the messages Denise had sent him.
He hesitated.
"Some of them are pretty bad.""
"That's okay. We can look at them together.""
He unlocked his phone.
There were dozens of messages.
Some were ordinary instructions.
Clean the kitchen before I get home.
Take the trash out.
Don't forget the laundry.
But others were different.
Your father works hard. Stop making his life difficult.
If you really loved him, you would stop creating problems.
You don't get to run this house.
Then I found one sent at 11:48 p.m. on a Tuesday.
Don't tell Marcus I made you stay downstairs. He has enough stress already.
I stared at the screen.
"What happened that night?""
Malik looked away.
"I fell asleep on the couch.""
"Why?""
"She locked the bedroom door because I hadn't finished folding the laundry.""
My jaw tightened.
"Where did you sleep?""
"Downstairs.""
"All night?""
He nodded.
I handed the phone back.
"Thank you for showing me.""
Then he showed me something else.
A message from Brianna.
It had been sent two days earlier.
I'm sorry about what Mom did. I told her you didn't break anything.
I read it twice.
"Did Brianna know Denise was blaming you for things you didn't do?""
Malik nodded.
"She knew about some things.""
"Why didn't she tell me?""
He shrugged.
"She's scared of her mom too.""
That was when I understood that the problem might extend beyond Malik.
Jordan and Brianna were teenagers.
They were Denise's children.
They were also living inside a household where their mother had decided that one child deserved less than the others.
I didn't want to turn them into enemies.
But I needed the truth.
Later that afternoon, I returned home alone.
Denise was in the living room, speaking on the phone.
She ended the call when she saw me.
"Where's Malik?""
"With my mother.""
She sighed.
"Are you planning to bring him back?""
"Not until we figure this out.""
She folded her arms.
"You're letting a teenager control your marriage.""
I ignored the comment.
"I want to see the kitchen camera footage.""
Her expression changed.
"What footage?""
"The security system.""
"We don't need to do that.""
I looked at her.
"Why not?""
"Because the cameras haven't been working properly.""
I frowned.
"They were working last week.""
She shrugged.
"Then something happened.""
I opened the security application on my phone.
The camera in the kitchen showed as disconnected.
So did the one near the back door.
I looked at Denise.
"When did they stop working?""
"I don't know.""
I walked into the kitchen.
The small camera above the pantry was still there.
I pressed the power button.
Nothing happened.
The cable had been removed.
I turned toward her.
"Did you unplug this?""
She looked annoyed.
"Marcus, this is ridiculous.""
"Answer the question.""
"I unplugged it because I didn't like being watched while I cooked.""
I stared at her.
"Why didn't you tell me?""
"Because I didn't think I needed your permission.""
I took a breath.
"Do you have anything to hide?""
She laughed.
"You're unbelievable.""
I went into my office and checked the security account.
The footage from the previous month was still stored in the cloud.
I started scrolling.
At first, everything seemed ordinary.
Denise preparing meals.
Jordan walking through the kitchen.
Brianna filling a glass of water.
Then I found a recording from a Wednesday evening.
The timestamp read 6:42 p.m.
Malik was standing near the kitchen island.
He was holding a plate.
Denise entered.
She took the plate from his hands and pointed toward the sink.
Even without sound, I could tell she was angry.
Malik placed the plate down.
Then he started washing dishes.
A few minutes later, Jordan and Brianna entered.
They opened the refrigerator.
Both took food.
Denise smiled at them.
She handed Jordan a drink and placed a bowl of fruit in front of Brianna.
Malik continued washing dishes.
I moved to another recording.
This one was from the following Saturday.
Malik was eating a sandwich near the counter.
Denise entered and pointed toward the trash.
He immediately stopped eating.
He picked up his sandwich and placed it on a paper towel.
Then he carried the trash outside.
When he returned, his sandwich was gone.
I watched the footage again.
And again.
Then I heard footsteps behind me.
Denise stood in the office doorway.
"Why are you watching those?""
I didn't turn around.
"Because I want to know what happened.""
She walked closer.
"You're invading my privacy.""
I paused the video.
"That's our kitchen.""
"You're making me look like a monster.""
I turned in my chair.
"I don't need to make you look like anything.""
She stared at the screen.
For a moment, her face lost its confidence.
Then she pointed toward the computer.
"There's more context.""
"What context?""
"Malik was disrespectful that day.""
I looked back at the recording.
"He's washing dishes while your children eat.""
"He had responsibilities.""
"Why did you take his sandwich?""
She didn't answer.
I stood.
"Denise, I need you to leave Malik alone until we figure out what's happening.""
Her eyes narrowed.
"You're threatening me?""
"I'm setting a boundary.""
She stepped closer.
"Then let me tell you something, Marcus. If you keep humiliating me over this boy, you're going to lose everything.""
I stared at her.
"What does that mean?""
She picked up her handbag.
"You'll find out.""
Then she walked out of the office.
I returned to the security footage.
I wanted to find the recording from the night she had accused Malik of breaking the laptop.
I knew it had happened in the living room.
The camera there was still working.
I searched the date.
At 4:16 p.m., the footage showed Brianna carrying a glass of juice toward the coffee table.
Jordan was sitting nearby.
Denise was upstairs.
Malik entered the room carrying a schoolbag.
Brianna's glass slipped.
Juice spilled across the laptop.
Jordan jumped up.
Malik rushed over with a towel.
Then Denise entered.
She looked at the laptop.
She pointed directly at Malik.
He shook his head.
He tried to explain.
She grabbed his arm.
And then the recording captured something I would never forget.
Denise leaned close to his face.
She spoke for several seconds.
Malik's expression changed.
He stopped defending himself.
He simply lowered his head.
I froze the image.
Then I noticed Jordan.
He was standing behind Denise.
He was watching his mother.
And he was holding his phone.
A moment later, Jordan looked directly at the camera.
He pointed toward it.
Then he mouthed two words.
I enlarged the image.
My heart started pounding.
May you like
The words were unmistakable.
I'm sorry.
