Chapter 2: The Rules Nobody Told Me About
I didn't sleep that night.
At 2:17 a.m., I was sitting in my home office, staring at the handwritten note.
The house was quiet.
Somewhere upstairs, a television was still playing.
I could hear Jordan laughing.
Brianna was probably scrolling through her phone.
Denise was in our bedroom.
Malik was the only person I couldn't stop thinking about.
I remembered all the times he'd told me he was tired.
All the evenings he'd said he wasn't hungry.
All the weekends when he'd asked whether he could visit Grandma Evelyn.
I had assumed he was going through ordinary teenage changes.
I hadn't considered that he might have been trying to escape his own home.
At 2:36, my phone vibrated.
It was a message from Malik.
"Dad, are you awake?""
I immediately replied.
"Yes, son. Come downstairs.""
A few minutes later, I heard footsteps.
Malik appeared in the doorway wearing the same gray hoodie from dinner.
His hair was messy, and he was holding a glass of water.
"Can't sleep?"" I asked.
He shook his head.
"Me neither.""
I pointed toward the chair across from me.
"Sit down.""
He sat.
For a while, neither of us spoke.
Then I asked the question that had been eating at me.
"How long has Denise been treating you like this?""
He looked at his hands.
"I don't know.""
"Has it been happening since she moved in?""
He shrugged.
"Not at first.""
"What changed?""
He rubbed his palms against his sweatpants.
"After you married her.""
I leaned forward.
"Tell me.""
He took a breath.
"At first, she was nice. She used to make breakfast for me. She even helped me with a science project.""
I remembered that.
Denise had proudly shown me photographs of the project.
"What happened after that?""
"She started saying things about how expensive everything was.""
"Like what?""
"She said I used too much electricity. She said I took long showers. She said I ate too much food.""
My jaw tightened.
"She said that to you?""
He nodded.
"Sometimes she would tell me to save food for Jordan and Brianna because they were growing.""
I stared at him.
"You were growing too.""
"I know.""
He paused.
"Then she started making me do more chores.""
"Which chores?""
"Whatever she wanted.""
He counted on his fingers.
"Cleaning the kitchen, washing dishes, doing laundry, taking out the trash, cleaning the garage, washing the cars.""
"Did Jordan and Brianna have chores?""
"Sometimes they had to put their clothes away.""
I closed my eyes.
"And you never told me?""
He gave a small, sad smile.
"I tried.""
"When?""
"Remember when I asked if I could go stay with Grandma for a few days last month?""
I nodded.
"You said you wanted a break from the house.""
"That wasn't the real reason.""
He looked directly at me.
"I wanted to get away from Denise.""
My chest tightened.
"Why didn't you say that?""
"Because she said if I made you choose between us, you'd choose your marriage.""
I stood and walked toward the window.
Outside, the streetlights illuminated the driveway.
My two cars were parked where they always were.
The garage was spotless.
The kitchen was clean.
The house looked perfect.
And my son had been suffering inside it.
I turned around.
"Malik, listen to me. You will never have to compete with anyone for your place in this family.""
He nodded, but his expression didn't change.
I realized words were no longer enough.
I needed to know exactly what had happened.
"Did she ever hurt you physically?""
He hesitated.
That hesitation frightened me.
"Malik?""
"She grabbed my arm once.""
"When?""
"A few weeks ago.""
"What happened?""
He pulled the sleeve of his hoodie down.
"She said I was taking too long with the groceries.""
I walked toward him.
"Can I see?""
He slowly pushed up his sleeve.
There was a faint yellowish mark near his wrist.
It wasn't fresh.
But it was enough.
I sat beside him.
"Did she cause that?""
He nodded.
"She grabbed me when I tried to walk away.""
I felt anger rising in my chest.
But I kept my voice calm.
"Did she do anything else?""
He shook his head.
Then he added quietly, "She said you would think I was exaggerating.""
I looked at my son.
"Why would you believe that?""
"Because sometimes you do.""
The words stopped me.
I couldn't even defend myself.
He continued.
"Remember when she said I broke her laptop?""
I nodded.
"She said I dropped it.""
"Did you?""
"No. Brianna spilled juice on it. Denise told me to clean it up, but the laptop wouldn't turn on.""
I remembered that incident.
Denise had been furious.
I had told Malik to apologize because I didn't want another argument.
I had never asked what really happened.
"She blamed you?""
He nodded.
"And when I tried to explain, you said I needed to stop making excuses.""
I lowered my head.
For three years, I had been so determined to make our blended family work that I had mistaken silence for harmony.
"Son, I'm sorry.""
He looked away.
"I know you didn't know.""
"That doesn't make it okay.""
He stood.
"Can I go back to bed?""
I nodded.
"Of course.""
At the doorway, he stopped.
"Dad?""
"Yes?""
"Are you going to tell Denise I talked to you?""
I understood immediately.
He was afraid.
"Not unless I need to. But I won't let her punish you for telling me the truth.""
He gave a small nod and disappeared upstairs.
I remained in the office until sunrise.
At seven, I called my mother.
She answered on the second ring.
"Marcus?""
"Mom, I need you to tell me everything.""
There was a pause.
Then Evelyn sighed.
"I was hoping you would ask.""
She told me about the afternoons she had found Malik cleaning alone.
About the lunches he had missed.
About the times Denise had told her that Malik was becoming spoiled.
But one incident stood out.
Three weeks earlier, Evelyn had arrived unexpectedly with a birthday cake for Malik.
She found him sitting on the back porch.
He was eating a plain piece of bread.
When she asked why he wasn't inside, he said Denise had told him the kitchen was off-limits until he finished cleaning.
My mother had confronted Denise.
Denise told her that Malik had been disrespectful.
Then she threatened to stop allowing Evelyn to visit unless she learned to respect her parenting decisions.
"Why didn't you tell me?"" I asked.
"I tried, Marcus.""
"When?""
"At least three times.""
I remembered the missed calls.
The messages I had read while working.
The conversations I had cut short because I was busy.
My mother continued.
"Every time I tried to bring it up, Denise told me you were stressed. She said I was making your marriage difficult.""
I pressed my fingers against my forehead.
"Mom, I'm sorry.""
"Don't apologize to me. Protect that child.""
I looked toward the staircase.
"I will.""
Then Evelyn said something else.
"There's something you should check.""
"What?""
"Malik's bedroom door.""
I frowned.
"What's wrong with it?""
"Denise told me she had the lock changed.""
My blood ran cold.
"Why?""
"She said Malik needed to learn not to shut himself away from the family.""
I ended the call.
Then I walked upstairs.
Malik's bedroom door was closed.
I tried the handle.
It wouldn't turn.
I knocked.
"Malik?""
No answer.
I knocked again.
"Son, it's Dad.""
A few seconds later, I heard him approaching.
The door opened slightly.
He looked confused.
"What's wrong?""
I pointed toward the lock.
"Why can't you open your door from the inside?""
His expression changed.
He looked down.
"Denise said I didn't need privacy anymore.""
I stared at him.
"She changed your bedroom lock?""
He nodded.
Then he stepped aside.
I entered.
His room was clean, but something was missing.
The small television that had always sat on his dresser was gone.
So was his gaming console.
"Where are your things?""
"Denise took them.""
"Why?""
"She said I hadn't earned them.""
I looked toward his closet.
His school backpack was sitting on the floor.
A folded piece of paper stuck out of the side pocket.
I pulled it free.
It was a printed sheet with a list of household rules.
At the top was Denise's name.
Underneath were instructions for Malik.
No snacks without permission.
No television.
No closing bedroom doors.
All household chores completed before dinner.
No visits to Grandma Evelyn without approval.
I read the final rule twice.
Do not discuss household discipline with Marcus.
I slowly lowered the paper.
My wife hadn't simply been making unreasonable decisions.
She had created an entire system designed to keep me from finding out.
May you like
And then I heard Denise's voice behind me.
"What are you doing in his room?""
