Chapter 9: The Son I Never Knew

The words followed me everywhere.

Your first son.

I kept hearing them.

Even when nobody was speaking.

Even when the world around me continued moving.

I had two sons.

Ethan and Caleb.

Everyone knew that.

Everyone.

So what was Vivian talking about?

Daniel looked at Maya.

“What does that mean?””

Maya looked uncomfortable.

“I don’t know everything.””

“But you know something.””

She nodded.

“I found documents in Vivian’s office.””

“What kind of documents?””

“Adoption records.””

My heart stopped.

“Whose?””

She looked at me.

“Yours.””

I sat down.

“No.””

Maya reached into her bag.

She handed me an envelope.

“I didn’t want to believe it either.””

Inside were papers.

Old papers.

My name.

My signature.

A child’s name.

Lucas Hale.

I stared.

I didn’t recognize the name.

But my body reacted before my mind did.

A strange pain.

A memory.

A little boy.

Brown hair.

A red toy car.

A voice saying:

“Daddy, watch me.””

I covered my mouth.

Daniel noticed.

“You remember something.””

I shook my head.

“I don’t know.””

Then everything came back.

Not all at once.

Pieces.

A woman crying.

A hospital room.

A child.

A decision.

Years ago, before Ethan and Caleb.

Before Vivian.

There had been another life.

Another child.

My first marriage.

A son.

Lucas.

But where was he?

I looked at Maya.

“What happened?””

She swallowed.

“Your first wife died.””

My chest tightened.

“I know.””

“After that, Vivian became involved.””

“Why?””

Maya looked at the papers.

“Because Lucas inherited something.””

Daniel grabbed the documents.

“An inheritance.””

I nodded slowly.

My first wife’s family had owned property.

Assets.

Money.

But Lucas was the legal heir.

And Vivian knew.

“She wanted control.””

Maya nodded.

“She couldn’t control everything while Lucas existed.””

The room went silent.

My entire body felt cold.

“Where is he?””

Nobody answered.

Then Daniel found another document.

His face changed.

“What?””

He looked at me.

“Lucas was declared missing.””

“When?””

“Seven years ago.””

The same year as my accident.

I closed my eyes.

Seven years.

Seven years of missing memories.

Seven years of Vivian controlling my life.

I looked at Maya.

“You knew?””

She shook her head.

“I knew something was wrong.””

“Why didn’t you tell me?””

“Because Vivian threatened me.””

“With what?””

She looked down.

“She said if I talked, she would make sure nobody believed me.””

I looked toward the police officer standing nearby.

“Find Lucas.””

They started searching immediately.

Hours passed.

Then days.

And during those days, Vivian finally broke.

Not completely.

But enough.

During questioning, she admitted parts of the truth.

Not because she felt guilty.

Because she believed she still had control.

“I never wanted anyone hurt,” she said.

Daniel laughed bitterly.

“You destroyed lives.””

“I was protecting my family.””

“You kidnapped a child.””

Her face changed.

“I didn’t kidnap him.””

“Then where is he?””

Silence.

That silence told us everything.

Finally, she whispered:

“He was sent away.””

My hands shook.

“Where?””

She looked at me.

“I don’t know.””

Nobody believed her.

Including me.

But then something unexpected happened.

A message arrived.

Unknown number.

A photo.

A young man.

Around seventeen years old.

Standing outside a house.

May you like

Underneath the photo was one sentence.

I think you’re my father.
