Chapter 4: The Child Who Remembered Everything

I didn’t sleep after Ethan told me that.

I sat beside his bed until sunrise.

My son’s small hand stayed wrapped around my finger.

Like he was afraid that if he let go, something terrible would happen.

“Ethan,” I whispered, “what did Mommy do?””

He stared at the ceiling.

“She told Caleb not to tell.””

“Tell what?””

He swallowed.

“About the box.””

My heart stopped.

“The same box?””

He nodded.

“The one Mommy put in Maya’s bag?””

“Yes.””

I felt sick.

“What happened with Caleb?””

Ethan’s voice shook.

“He saw Mommy.””

“When?””

“A few days before Maya got arrested.””

I waited.

“She was in the kitchen.””

“Your mother?””

“Yes.””

“What was Caleb doing?””

“Getting water.””

Ethan closed his eyes.

“He saw Mommy put something in her purse.””

“Did he say anything?””

“He asked what it was.””

“And?””

“Mommy got angry.””

My hands tightened.

“What did she say?””

Ethan looked at me.

“She said little boys who ask too many questions lose things.””

I stood up immediately.

“What things?””

Ethan whispered:

“Family.””

The word broke me.

I left the room and called Daniel.

He answered on the first ring.

“What happened?””

“My wife threatened my children.””

There was silence.

“Are you sure?””

“I’m sure.””

“Do you have proof?””

I looked back at Ethan.

“No.””

“Then we need to get some.””

The next few days became a careful game.

I acted normal.

That was the hardest thing I had ever done.

I ate breakfast with Vivian.

I listened to her talk about charity events.

I watched her kiss the boys goodbye.

And I hated myself for pretending.

But Daniel was right.

If Vivian was capable of this, I couldn’t move without evidence.

Then something unexpected happened.

Caleb came to me.

Not Ethan.

Caleb.

He stood outside my office door holding a drawing.

“Daddy?””

I looked up.

“What’s wrong?””

He walked in slowly.

“This is Mommy.””

He handed me the paper.

It showed three people.

Me.

Caleb.

Ethan.

And a fourth person.

A woman with a huge smile.

But there was something strange.

The woman was drawn behind a wall.

“What is this?””

Caleb shrugged.

“She watches us.””

My chest tightened.

“What do you mean?””

He whispered:

“Mommy says she can see everything.””

I stared at the drawing.

“Caleb, has Mommy ever hurt you?””

He looked down.

“No.””

“Has she scared you?””

A long pause.

Then:

“Yes.””

That afternoon, I installed additional security cameras.

Not because I wanted to spy.

Because I needed to protect my children.

Two days later, I got what I needed.

Vivian thought she was alone.

She wasn’t.

The camera captured her entering Ethan’s room.

She sat beside him.

I watched the footage from my office.

My hands shook.

“What did she say?””

I turned up the volume.

Vivian smiled.

“Ethan, sweetheart.””

Ethan sat on his bed.

Silent.

“You’ve been acting differently.””

No answer.

“Are you angry with Mommy?””

Still nothing.

Vivian leaned closer.

“You know what happens when children lie.””

Ethan looked terrified.

“I’m not lying.””

“Yes, you are.””

“No.””

Her voice became sharper.

“You told Daddy things.””

My heart stopped.

How did she know?

Then she said:

“Maya taught you to be disobedient.””

Ethan shook his head.

“She didn’t.””

Vivian stood.

“You don’t want to lose your family, do you?””

Ethan started crying.

“No.””

“Then you’ll forget what you saw.””

The camera caught her leaving.

I watched the clip again.

Then I watched it a third time.

There was no doubt.

My wife had threatened our son.

I sent the footage to Daniel.

His response came within minutes.

“We have enough to act.””

But before we could do anything, Vivian made her move.

That night, she packed a suitcase.

I found her near the front door.

“Going somewhere?””

She looked surprised.

Then smiled.

“I was wondering when you’d figure it out.””

The calmness scared me.

“You know I have evidence.””

She laughed softly.

“Evidence of what?””

“You threatened Ethan.””

Her smile disappeared.

Only briefly.

Then she picked up her phone.

“You should ask yourself something.””

“What?””

“Why would your son believe me if I was really the monster?””

I stared at her.

“What are you saying?””

She unlocked her phone.

“Because Ethan isn’t the only one who remembers that night.””

She showed me a photo.

A photo of a document.

A hospital report.

My name was on it.

And underneath it was a date.

The same night Vivian claimed I was away on business.

The same night Ethan said something happened.

May you like

Then she whispered:

“You don’t remember what you did, do you?””
