Chapter 8: The Red Ledger

By noon, the police had established that the location Daniel had sent me was an old commercial property registered to a company associated with Silver Pine.

They were preparing an operation.

I was instructed to remain at headquarters until they had confirmed the safest way to recover Emily.

For the first time in my life, waiting felt unbearable.

I walked from one end of the conference room to the other.

Richard sat at the table, reviewing the documents.

Helen was on the telephone with Margaret Ellis.

And I kept looking at my phone.

No message from Emily.

No call.

Nothing.

At 12:26 p.m., Richard spoke.

“Michael, there's something in these records you should see.””

He turned his laptop toward me.

It showed a list of payments made from my father's original investment account.

The dates went back fifteen years.

Most of the transfers were legitimate.

But three stood out.

They had been made to a company called Reed Financial Partners.

The amounts were substantial.

One hundred thousand.

Two hundred thousand.

And finally, three hundred thousand dollars.

I stared.

“Daniel?””

Richard nodded.

“The company was dissolved shortly after the last payment.””

“Who authorized the transfers?””

Richard opened another file.

“Your father.””

I leaned back.

“Why would my father pay Daniel?””

“I don't know.””

Helen ended her call.

“Margaret has found something.””

She placed her phone on speaker.

“Michael, your father was investigating Daniel before he died.””

“Why didn't anyone tell me?””

“Because he believed the matter could be resolved privately. He suspected that Daniel had used a false investment proposal to obtain money from several people.””

“Was Vanessa involved?””

“Not initially. But your father later discovered correspondence between her and Daniel.””

My stomach tightened.

“What did it say?””

“Vanessa had asked Daniel to help her gain access to certain family assets.””

I stared at the wall.

“So this has been happening for years.””

“Yes.””

I rubbed my forehead.

“Where is the red ledger?””

Margaret paused.

“I've been trying to locate it. Your mother told me she had secured it in a private storage unit.””

“Where?””

“An old family property in New Haven.””

I immediately called the investigators.

They agreed to send an officer with me.

Within forty minutes, we were standing outside a small brick storage facility that had belonged to my parents.

The manager recognized my name.

He led us to Unit 118.

The lock was old.

The officer opened it.

Inside were boxes of photographs, furniture, and my mother's personal belongings.

I searched through several containers.

Then I found a wooden trunk.

It was locked.

The officer helped me open it.

Inside were old account books, letters, and a red leather-bound ledger.

I picked it up.

The cover was worn.

My mother's handwriting appeared on the first page.

For Michael. Only open this if someone tries to steal what belongs to the children.

My hands trembled.

I opened it.

The first pages contained financial records from my father's final years.

Then I found a section titled:

*DANIEL REED — PRIVATE INVESTMENT ARRANGEMENTS.*

The entries were detailed.

Dates.

Amounts.

Account numbers.

Names.

And beside several transactions, my father's handwritten notes.

One entry caught my attention.

Daniel claims Vanessa has agreed to provide access to the family trust. I do not believe her intentions are honest.

Another read:

Claire has been paid for introductions. She insists she does not understand the arrangement. I no longer believe her.

I closed my eyes.

My father had seen it.

He had known my sister was involved.

And he had tried to protect us.

Then I reached the final section.

It contained copies of letters exchanged between my father and Daniel.

The last letter was dated two weeks before my father died.

Daniel,

I am aware of your attempts to approach my granddaughter through her mother. This will stop immediately.

If you continue, I will release the original financial records to the authorities.

You have already taken enough.

I read the sentence again.

My granddaughter.

Emily.

Daniel had known about her inheritance before she was born.

The final page contained a handwritten note.

The money was never the real objective. They want control of the property beneath the original Carter estate.

I stared at the words.

“What property?””

The officer examined the page.

“Do you know?””

I shook my head.

My father had owned several properties before establishing Carter Hospitality.

One was a large estate outside Hartford.

It had been sold years earlier.

Another was a small piece of undeveloped land near the Connecticut River.

I remembered it.

It was part of the original trust.

The land had been valued modestly when my father established the trust.

But over the years, a major commercial development had been built nearby.

Its value had increased dramatically.

I called Helen.

“Check the trust's land holdings.””

She was silent for several seconds while typing.

Then she said:

“Michael, the property is still owned by the trust.””

“How much is it worth?””

“I've just checked the latest valuation.””

She paused.

“Approximately twenty-eight million dollars.””

I stared at the red ledger.

Twenty-eight million.

That was why Daniel wanted the beneficiary amendment.

That was why Vanessa needed Emily removed.

And that was why the ownership transfer agreement was so urgent.

The family trust held the land.

But if Emily's beneficiary rights were transferred to Silver Pine, Daniel could gain influence over the asset.

My father had built a legal barrier around his granddaughter.

Daniel was trying to destroy it.

I took photographs of the ledger pages and sent them to Helen.

Then I heard my phone ring.

Unknown number.

I answered.

“Michael?””

It was Vanessa.

Her voice was shaking.

“Please don't let Daniel hurt her.””

I stopped breathing for a moment.

“Where are you?””

“Michael, listen to me. I made a mistake.””

“Where is Emily?””

“I don't know what he's planning anymore.””

“You brought her there!””

“I thought it would be temporary.””

I closed my eyes.

“You thought kidnapping our daughter would be temporary?””

“Don't say that!””

“Tell me where she is.””

Vanessa began crying.

“Daniel has the documents. He says he won't release Emily until you sign.””

“Then tell him he's not getting my signature.””

“Michael, you don't understand. He has something on me.””

“What?””

She whispered:

“He knows about the money I took.””

“You took more than three hundred thousand dollars.””

“That's not all.””

My grip tightened.

“What else?””

“He says if I cooperate, he'll make sure I don't go to prison.””

I felt a bitter laugh rise in my throat.

“You're worried about prison while our daughter is being held against her will?””

“Michael, please. I never wanted this to happen.””

“Then help me stop it.””

There was a long silence.

Finally, Vanessa said:

“There's a second entrance to the property. Daniel doesn't know I know about it.””

I immediately told the officer.

“Where?””

“Behind the old loading bay. There's a service road.””

“Is Emily there?””

“Yes.””

“Are you with her?””

“No.””

“Then why are you calling me?””

Vanessa's voice dropped.

“Because Daniel has just told me something.””

“What?””

“He says that even if you sign the documents, he's not going to let Emily go.””

I felt my blood turn cold.

“Why?””

“Because she knows about the red ledger.””

The call ended.

I looked at the officer.

He was already speaking into his radio.

Then my phone received another message.

A photograph of Daniel standing inside the abandoned property.

He was holding a folder.

Behind him, Emily was sitting on a chair.

And beside her stood a woman I hadn't expected to see.

May you like

My sister.

Claire.
