Chapter 5: My Sister's Secret

I drove to Claire's house the following morning.

I didn't call ahead.

I didn't send a message.

I simply parked outside her white colonial home in Greenwich and walked to the front door.

She answered wearing a cream sweater and carrying a cup of coffee.

“Michael?””

Her smile was immediate.

“Good heavens. What are you doing here?””

“I need to talk.””

“Of course. Come in.””

She stepped aside.

The house smelled of vanilla candles and fresh coffee.

Everything was immaculate.

A vase of white roses stood on the dining table. A framed photograph of our late father hung above the fireplace.

Claire followed my gaze.

“I was thinking about Dad yesterday,” she said.

“It's strange how much I miss him.””

I looked at her.

“So do I.””

She led me toward the kitchen.

“Would you like coffee?””

“No.””

She set her cup down.

“Is something wrong?””

I placed the photograph from Emily's room on the counter.

Claire looked at it.

Her fingers stopped moving.

Then she smiled.

“Oh, that. Daniel was there that night.””

“You know Daniel Reed?””

“Of course. Vanessa introduced us.””

“When?””

“A few months ago.””

“Why?””

Claire lifted one shoulder.

“Business, I suppose.””

“What kind of business?””

“Michael, I don't know. You know how Vanessa is. She enjoys meeting people.””

I watched her face.

“Did she give him company documents?””

Claire's expression changed.

“Why would you ask me that?””

“Because I have evidence that she did.””

She looked toward the window.

Then back at me.

“You should be careful about accusing people.””

“I'm not accusing you.””

“Good.””

“I'm asking you what happened.””

Claire picked up her coffee.

Her hand trembled slightly.

“Michael, I think you're letting Emily's imagination get the better of you.””

I stared at her.

“Why does everyone keep saying that?””

“Because she's fifteen. She's emotional. She's been under pressure.””

“She was kept out of school for seventeen days.””

Claire looked genuinely surprised.

“Vanessa told me Emily was ill.””

“She wasn't.””

“Well, perhaps Vanessa didn't want to discuss family problems.””

“Family problems?””

I took another document from my coat.

It was a copy of the ownership transfer agreement.

Claire glanced at it.

Then she put her coffee down.

“Where did you get that?””

“Does the signature look familiar?””

She didn't answer.

I leaned forward.

“Claire, I know Vanessa created Silver Pine Consulting. I know Daniel Reed is involved. I know money was transferred from my company. And I know someone has been using my credentials to prepare a transfer of ownership.””

She closed her eyes.

“Michael…”

“Tell me the truth.””

For several seconds, she said nothing.

Then she pulled out a chair and sat down.

“Vanessa told me you knew.””

I felt my stomach tighten.

“Knew what?””

“That she was arranging an investment.””

“An investment?””

“She said you wanted to restructure the company. She told me you had asked her to handle certain negotiations.””

I shook my head.

“That's a lie.””

“I understand that now.””

“Did you help her?””

Claire looked down.

“I introduced her to Daniel.””

The words were quiet.

But they were enough.

I stepped away from the counter.

“Why?””

“He said he could help her establish a consulting business.””

“Did you know she was taking money from Carter Hospitality?””

“No.””

“Did you know she was preparing documents to transfer my shares?””

“No!””

Her voice cracked.

“I swear, Michael.””

I looked at her.

“Then why were you helping them?””

Claire pressed her fingers against her forehead.

“Because Vanessa told me something about you.””

“What?””

“She said you were planning to sell the company and move overseas.””

I stared.

“What?””

“She said you wanted to leave Connecticut. That you were tired of the business and wanted a clean break.””

“That's ridiculous.””

“I know that now.””

She stood abruptly.

“Michael, I never wanted to hurt you.””

“Then help me understand why you attended meetings with a man who was preparing fraudulent ownership documents.””

Claire began to cry.

“I thought he was a legitimate financial adviser.””

“Did you receive money?””

She looked away.

That was my answer.

“How much?””

“Michael…”

“How much, Claire?””

She wiped her cheeks.

“Thirty thousand dollars.””

I felt my hands curl into fists.

“From Vanessa?””

“From Daniel.””

“What was it for?””

She hesitated.

Then she walked to a drawer and removed a small envelope.

Inside was a bank transfer receipt.

Thirty thousand dollars.

The reference line read:

*INTRODUCTION FEE — PRIVATE EQUITY ARRANGEMENT.*

I looked at her.

“You sold me for thirty thousand dollars?””

“No!””

“Then what would you call it?””

“I thought it was legitimate!””

“Did you ever ask me?””

She didn't answer.

I turned toward the door.

“Michael, please.””

I stopped.

Claire moved closer.

“There is something else you need to know.””

I turned back.

She took a breath.

“Vanessa told me she wasn't planning to keep the money.””

“What does that mean?””

“She said the transfer was only the first step. Daniel had another arrangement. Something involving your family's trust.””

I felt the blood drain from my face.

My father had established the Carter Family Trust years before he died.

It held the property that had originally funded my company.

It also contained provisions protecting my children's future inheritance.

“What arrangement?””

Claire shook her head.

“I don't know everything.””

“Claire.””

“I saw a document once. Vanessa was furious because she couldn't get it signed.””

“What document?””

“A beneficiary amendment.””

I stared at her.

“Whose beneficiary amendment?””

“Emily's.””

For several seconds, the room seemed to lose all sound.

My father had created the trust specifically to protect his grandchildren.

Emily and Noah were named beneficiaries.

No one could remove them without meeting strict legal requirements.

“Why would Vanessa want to change Emily's beneficiary status?””

Claire's eyes filled again.

“Because Emily was asking questions.””

I looked at the photograph on the counter.

My daughter had discovered the money transfers.

She had discovered the forged ownership documents.

And apparently, she had also discovered something connected to her inheritance.

“Where is the amendment?””

“I don't know.””

“Who has it?””

“Daniel.””

I reached for my phone.

But before I could dial, it rang.

The caller ID showed Emily's number.

I answered immediately.

“Sweetheart?””

There was no response.

Then I heard Noah crying.

“Daddy?””

My entire body went cold.

“Noah? Where's Emily?””

“Mommy took her.””

I gripped the counter.

“What do you mean she took her?””

“Emily said she didn't want to go.””

I heard a door slam in the background.

Then Noah whispered something that made my blood run cold.

“Daddy, Mommy said Emily has to go before you find out what Grandpa left her.””

The call disconnected.

I stared at my phone.

Claire covered her mouth.

I didn't wait for another explanation.

I ran outside, started my car, and called the police.

But as I pulled onto the road, a message arrived from an unknown number.

It contained a photograph of Emily sitting in the back of a black SUV.

Her face was turned toward the window.

May you like

Beneath the photograph were eight words.

*Stop looking for the money, Michael. Or lose your daughter.*
